Does it hurt cats to clip their nails?

I have a lovely cat that doesn't scratch enough to shed his claws, despite having gotten him several different materials to scratch. His nails grow super long, and twice he got one stuck in his paw, so now we get them clipped once a month. I wonder if this is ok for him? I know that declawing a cat, which is when you completely remove the cats nails, causes both physical and emotional discomfort, but I don't know how he feels about having them clipped occasionally?

I had a dog that used to scream even before I even cut his nails lol. Like others said, if you don't cut the quick it won't hurt but sometimes it freaks them out anyway.

@JimboSaturn The key is to get it done when they are little. Normalize it when they're young and impressionable. They still won't like it, but it'll become an annoying fact of life for them.

@LordShadowfire Yes most of my dogs are rescue so who knows. Plus dogs are hard because they may have black nails and you can't tell where the quick is.

@JimboSaturn Yeah, black nails are a nightmare.
