It's really not that hard. When a woman gets married people have no issue addressing her by her new pronoun. It's a choice to evolve with language or to stay behind.
ffony · M
@HijabaDabbaDoo What do you really mean by 'evolve with language' - can you spell it out?
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
@bijouxbroussard For men there's a relegated to history 'master' pronoun which I hated people using to describe me when I was a kid. FFS I have a real name and it's not 'bloke man'. But 'mate' will do fine as that's aussie vernacular for 'that guy over there'.
chilloutab2 · 46-50, M
@HijabaDabbaDoo Those are not pronouns... they are gendered titles. The English language only has three kinds of pronouns: It-its; She-her-hers; He-him-his.
Each of these three groups then take the plural forms: These-those-they-them-their-theirs
And now we could have the possible modification of the English language with the addition of more pronouns... but before that we need consensus on what these pronouns are, how they are to be used and modified according to their use cases, whether we can set a limit to the number of pronouns, and if so what that limit is... etc.
Language is a matter of convention... a sound or group of sounds come to signify something when: a) most people agree that it signifies that very thing & b) it keeps signifying that very thing for an adequate length of time for it to be officially codified or accepted by a majority.
If some people introduce a pronoun into the English language today - or several pronouns - then those will have to pass through the same due process and stand the same test of time for them to become part of the English lexicon. Modifying any language takes consensus and decades, sometimes centuries.... unless it is a scientific descriptor or a technical term (and even those often follow the same process).

I am perfectly fine with people determining their own identity. Who am I to tell them who they are?
chilloutab2 · 46-50, M
@Mamapolo2016 We all have the jurisdiction to mind our own actions... My action, which is perfectly within my jurisdiction, will be to tell them who I THINK they are. What they consider themselves to be is no concern of mine and also outside my jurisdiction.
On the flip side, it is in my jurisdiction to hear who someone THINKs I am... as it is in everybody's.

Correct. No one is! I agree!
Let's not judge. I would not be so presumptuous as to judge others. I will just restrain my judgement and jurisdiction to my own self. To me my way... to all others their own ways.

I just clarified, it has nothing to do with gender identity.
So we agree about that (although I seem to have missed your clarification.) Why then are you appearing to argue and talking about me 'pulling at straws' etc? (mate 😳)
SarahAndSamantha · 46-50, F
For every one time i see anyone talking about their pronouns, I see at least 20 people griping about pronouns. Whether it's 'omg, i can't keep up!!!' or 'I just think it's dumb and won't support it!!!!' or 'they're forcing it on us!!!!' or the one-joke 'my pronouns are attack/helicopter!!!!!!!'
Use 'em or don't, it's your choice really

ffony · M
@SarahAndSamantha I'm puzzled: When would you use their 'preferred' pronoun while speaking to someone? Just saying 'you' would be normal. Do you have an example from ordinary conversataion where you would address someone using another pronoun?
SarahAndSamantha · 46-50, F
@ffony y'know, for the most part, that's kinda the point. talking directly to someone, we pretty much never refer to them by he, she, they, any of that stuff. It's when talking about them that we do. that can be done in their presence, so it can directly affect them, but for the most part it's when they're not around.
this is why I don't see why people feel the need to not use a person's preferred pronouns, at least in their presence. For the most part, you don't even need to worry about it.
As for an example in ordinary conversation. I'm talking to Becky and Frank. Becky says "blah blah blah, blahbbity blah blah blah." I turn to Frank and say "Did you understand a single thing she just said?"

Language changes🤷♀️
If we can live with blogging, tweeting and googling, incels, yuppies, milfs, dawgs, sea kittens, griefing, gifs and selfies entering the language in the last 20 years....im sure we can get used to it.
Multiple pronouns isn't this new fangled thing :
French has two...even objects are gendered.
German has three.
Some languages have no genders and use distance pronouns instead
Native American Indian i think has five.
And some are even more complex and use semantics to imply gender like Chinese🤷♀️
It aint a probem unless you make it one

I think the people that use them are desperate for attention. Desperate to be unique. They live in a fantasy world. Pronouns are use to refer to someones sex not to accommodate your feelings. You can now identify as any sex, you can identify as a cat, a clown (yes seriously there are people that do this), and now seasons. So I might as well as identify as an attack apache helicopter? Do you not see how ridiculous that is?
JestAJester · 31-35, M

People who make a point of telling you there personal pronouns are narcissists.
If I can't tell if you're a man or woman, I'll ask, otherwise I'll use the system we have .

The latest thing about sexual identity is a reaction to the dehumanizing quality of our public lives. The pronouns are just one aspect.
Many would just call me a dumb liar though, Or they wouldn't know what I was talking about.
I also believe in freedom. NO ONE gets hurt looking at/wanting to be a tranny. Its ok to be oneself, none of my business ever. Its not for me to judge.

I disagree though that non-binaries and the like should expect other people to address them in 'third person' like they are not actually there in front of the person speaking to them, or there are 'more than two souls/spirits' embodied in the one body. I do know about the 'two-spirit' concept but non-binary is not 'two spirit' it's twisting the facts to suit the narrative of a person's own self-importance to reject reality and substitute their own.
Torsten · 36-40, M
a absolute joke and not a good one at that. There is only male and female. The rest is just made up nonsense
ffony · M
Pronouns are language. Language does not affect biology. Neither does personal gender identity, which belongs in the field of psychology.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
People aren’t reacting against the pronouns per se. They’re reacting about the tail wagging the dog. If the issue really affects .05% of the population, then that’s the level of concern it should receive as well.
There’s no need to change the world when a minor adaptation will do.

I prefer to not entertain it, people are already complicated enough. I'd avoid them unless I had a very specific interest in the person otherwise, then I might play their game.

@DiliMarky I find it a bit like a stomping me me me 4-5 year old testing what he or she can get away with. If they find some unified generally accepted system, okay, but I refuse to learn and remember a new language every time I meet a new person. I can barely remember names and faces of new people already. 😂
For example, you come here, what language do you speak? English. It's not my first language but I adapt, right? Can you imagine I would come here and started speaking in my first language and expected everyone to keep translating everything I say to English?

I haven’t heard any new pronouns yet. Either way it doesn’t bother me and I’m always acceptable when people want to be called a certain pronoun. It’s not hard to just call people what they want to be called even if you don’t agree with all these new pronouns coming out. That’s just being a mature adult and I found that a lot of people who have different pronouns other than “she” and “he” actually respect me because I’m not a dick about it knowing that I believe different from them.
InHeaven · F
Wha? I have no idea. I never got into any of that pronoun crazy nonsense to begin with
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
There are only two genders - male and female. My pronouns today are 'f/u'.
The only people who care about pronouns are those who believe they are not 'male' or 'female'. Especially the non-binary people who want to be referred to in their face using 3rd-person terminology. Plus the 'clown/clownself' and 'furry' types.

Also geneticslly a chromosome anomaly known as kleinkelters is when a person has more than only xx or xy chromosomes. Therefore is someone with xxy chromosomes a he only and a she too or a she only and also a he? Herein is where the confusion lies.

It seems strange to me, but then: I didn't grow up with the 'diversity of pronouns' thing. Younger people see things in different ways, and they always have done.

@Ynotisay Fair points. It's not as common as certain propaganda wants people to believe it is. I just think that many people have wtf moments when they receive requests to state their pronouns in emails and official documents. It's always weird for the first time when there weren't these requests before.
Ynotisay · M
@CrazyMusicLover I agree with being asked to define pronouns. I won't do it. Because I don't think it's sincere. When the pendulum started to swing, as it always does, it usually swings too far in some areas. And then there's pushback and it corrects itself. Hopefully with a little bit of progress but usually with a fair level of animosity and some victims along the way.
