Nope, not any more. And I'm informing people around me, in Europe, why they should stop buying American goods as well.

With allies like the orange capo di tutti capi we don't need enemies anymore.
EagerDaddy · 46-50, M
@BrandNewMan Your words say everything about your person.

I’ll block you, since you’re not able to discuss in a polite way.
GuidanceCounselor · 56-60, M
@EagerDaddy you block because you cannot handle an opposing view
EagerDaddy · 46-50, M
@GuidanceCounselor As you can see I handled many opposing views here without blocking.

But if someone is not able to communicate in a civilized way, I block, yes.

I have always tried to buy American but many of our largest stores make it very difficult to do. Macy's, JC Penney's, Nordstrom, Lord & Taylor, etc. all mostly carry foreign made merchandise. And it's not just the top name stores that are doing it. Your everyday go to stores like Target, Walmart, Old Navy, etc. pretty much carry 100% foreign made goods.

About 10 years ago, I was going overseas to visit family around the Christmas holidays. I literally went to every store in our large shopping mall to find gifts for them that were made in the USA. The only items I could actually find were cookies and candy.

IMO, if we really want to be able to buy American, we need to start boycotting a lot of stores until they offer American made products.

@DogMan says
So far Vietnam, and Thailand have
said Zero tariffs.

And the Tяump admin has rejected Vietnam's offer as inadequate.

... Vietnam's offer for 0% tariffs on U.S. imports “means nothing.”

As a construction material contractor, I didn't realize how much of our material was made
overseas.

I believe many on the left will NOT buy American, because they hate
Trump far more than they love this country.

I'm glad you found your nationalist sentiments when prices went up... now that everything is more expensive, you're really going to love Trump and the U.S.A..
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
Without prejudice: You opening remark is telling. So few Americans realise just how much of they their society uses to function is made overseas. And how much is involved if some of that production can come home..The time line can be years and the difference in cost would be back breaking..Much of Americas prosperity (such as it is) relies on cheap imports..😷
GuidanceCounselor · 56-60, M
@whowasthatmaskedman the foreign manufacturing will cave. They cannot afford not to
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@GuidanceCounselor Please explain the logic behind that statement? Or is this just optimism on your part?😷
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@GuidanceCounselor
foreign manufacturing will cave.
Or they will sell a little more to each of the other countries that buy from them. The US is the largest customer for many countries but for countries like China they are only about 15% of the country's export trade. So while it will be painful to lose that it is probably not enough to force China to capitulate.
Carla · 61-69, F
As construction "material contractor"...you deliver material? You work at home depot?
You order stock? You handle material for large projects? In any case, how do you not know about where the materials you handle come from? Do you not remember trumps tariffs from his first term? Or when so many products where held up during covid?
How many construction material providers in your area handle only american grown lumber? American made drywall? American made steel?
And let's be honest...those american made products are going to rise. There is no corporation that is not going to raise homegrown prices to closely resemble those of foriegn products.
If you are a contractor, i feel bad for you right now. But, it was your choice.
Steve42 · 56-60, M
I'm buying what is at the store. I don't like Trump, buffoon at best, but these tariffs are just the same thing these other countries have been doing to the us citizens since wwII. And paid for the security of Europe over the same time frame. I'm not against bringing industry back to our own country.
swirlie · F
@Steve42
You're right. It's more like 2.1% that each NATO member country has been spending annually, not 2%. Besides all that, it was the USA who wanted it this way, not the NATO countries involved. The US wanted full control of Europe's security to prevent proliferation of nuclear weapons which each country was otherwise planning on having, but instead the US agreed to look after security with a 2% GDP contribution from each member country. Europe never came to the US begging for security, it was the USA who came crawling to the EU.
Steve42 · 56-60, M
@swirlie Well we don't want it any more. If they were not going to do it, they should not have signed the document saying they would.
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
@Steve42 Exactly.....since WW2, the USA has let the other countries rebuild itself with all of their tariffs and there hasn't been a president yet that stood up to anyone and said enough is enough. You made your money and built a great Europe......now lets even out the score and make the tariffs the same. THAT'S ALL IT IS..... as time goes on, the tariffs will adjust and prices will come down.
Just let our new president run the country like a business..that's what we need to get out of this massive debt we're in
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
It's a political thing with the left. We all need to try and make this work, it will pay off in huge amounts of everything in the long run

carpediem · 61-69, M
I agree. TDS is a problem. Typical liberals can't see the big picture. They see whatever the complaint of the day is and that's it. They'd rather sit by and watch working class Americans struggle while gifting illegals all sorts of benefits paid for by the very people who are struggling.

Adrift · 61-69, F
I remember when the made in the USA tag was what you looked for.
Buying American supported American jobs and workers.
Made in china would get you laughed at.
Chinese products were usually known as cheap counterfeit knock offs that wouldn't last long.
i personally cant wait to see australian beef and produce on australian supermarket shelves.

australian cars driving on the roads again. jobs and revenue a plenty...

etc etc

🍿
GuidanceCounselor · 56-60, M
EagerDaddy · 46-50, M
@PatKirby One of the mayor problems of the USA is that half of the nation (left/right, Republican/Democratic) is calling the other half all bad names thinkable and refuse to work together.

That used to be different.
akindheart · 61-69, F
i ordered from Fabletics. i got a tariff charge which shocked me. now i know where they buy their clothing
DogMan · 61-69, M
@akindheart I'm doing what I can to buy American.
pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
Actually I am a Canadian and we are actively avoiding EVERYTHING and ANYTHING made in America... We prefer things made in Canada but you see we can buy anything from anywhere ... other than America.. See what happens when your President pisses off the whole world? Turns out the world can exist just fine ... without America...
DogMan · 61-69, M
@pdqsailor1 Wow, you have some crazy conspiracy theory there. Please Oh Canada,
have mercy on the poor downtrodden of the United States. Democrats have bankrupted
our nation, we need more money or we will perish. Maybe that is why they bankrupted us.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@GuidanceCounselor You really know how to push ol Popeye's buttons. I love it! 🤣
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
@pdqsailor1 America will survive and eventually soon, be better off...time will tell
Nah man. Our cars break down more than anyone’s. I’ll pay more for a better product.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@swirlie 🤣 I have been actually driving them, I think I know better.
Carla · 61-69, F
@DogMan there is a large percentage of jeep and ram parts made elsewhere. And i believe some of the vehicles...renegade foe example, that are not made here at all.
swirlie · F
@DogMan
I have been actually driving them, I think I know better.

Well, as evidenced by your mindless right-wing MAGA rhetoric in this thread, I would say that you actually don't know better, even if you were driving them.
HobNoblin · 36-40, M
I've spent a lot of time online trying to find American made stuff. Usually I'll succeed.
I’m trying ….
MethDozer · M
Not always. I much prefer we remove the tarriffs on Canadian lumber. Even the ones that were in place before Trump's new BS. It was cheaper, higher quality and they have so much more of it. Trade is good.
Tru buying American crown coffee, chocolate, bananas, tea.. Good luck with all that. Keep consuming those things, and your argument is 100% bunk.
Besides there's plenty of resources we aren't even able to procure ourselves. The romanticized utopia of a walled garden of abundance is myth.

Also remember. It was the rich capitalist private businesses that sent jobs overseas. Not the government, not the EPA, nobody but the rich ownership class that wanted to maximize exploitation and profits for their own sole benefit.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Unfortunately, owing to Trump's recklessness, buying anything American will probably not be a practical option for me for many months to come.
GuidanceCounselor · 56-60, M
@SunshineGirl you will have to get drunk on some other import child
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@GuidanceCounselor Won't need to soon. Global warming is turning some of our English vineyards into prime terroir 🌞🍷
GuidanceCounselor · 56-60, M
@SunshineGirl yeah sure
Around 90 % of generic drugs in the US are imported and around 90% of prescriptions filled in the US are for generic drugs. I wonder how those reliant on prescription medicines will buy American 🤔
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
Here's the deal. No company in their right mi d is goi g to bothercsetting up shop in the US just to avoid a Trump tariff. It would be suicide. They would be locked out of selling in other countries. Meanwhile we're going to be stuck paying the additional 46 percent for stuff made in vietnam.

His plan is not going to work. The next election will be a bloodbath.

Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@Midlifemale But not American companies.
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
@Tastyfrzz most are not...correct. I have read that a few American companies that have moved their manufacturing to other countries, are thinking of coming back....Apple being one of them, Walmart, Stellantis (Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge) and GE...Honda will start building electric cars in Indiana. And lots more to come.
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
@Tastyfrzz
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC)
Chips giant, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), will boost its US investment by $100bn, building new five new “cutting edge” fabrication plants on American soil, Donald Trump has announced alongside the company's chief executive to avoid tariffs
DogMan · 61-69, M
This has really brought the shady foreign companies to light. They enacted Tariff surcharges
on their existing inventory that they did not pay higher tariffs on.

Spotpot · 46-50, M
You can pay much more for lower quality if you want that might not be true for other americans,
@Spotpot We have another problem "Engineered Obsolescence" products designed to stop working or need to be replaced or repaired after normal usage, which may seem to be a relatively short period of time.

@wildbill83 But marked " Made in the USA "
swirlie · F
@ShenaniganFoodie
No, they're not marked "Made in the USA", they're marked Made in China right on the purchase invoice.
Spotpot · 46-50, M
A strong dollar leads to more imports relative to exports if you want to boost exporters you have to devalue the currency.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Spotpot Most of what kept the $ strong was the demand for it as the trade currency. The Chinese and BRICS have recently been undrmining the foundations of that..😷
Spotpot · 46-50, M
@whowasthatmaskedman BRICS wont be a successes to diffrent countriues to diifrent culkuresa and econiomies,
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Spotpot BRICS payment system is already a success, using the Yuan as a trading currency and China are selling blocks of Yuan for use. Just like the Americans have..The saudis, South Africanjs and Brazilians have been at it for a while now..And others are starting to do it. So Sorry.. "WRONG!"😷
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
It would be nice if most products made in America were made by American owned companies.

@Entwistle I think Trump said it was better cold. 😉
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@DogMan I will need to import some American ice to put in the glass of chilled bleach!

@SatanBurger The USAID bribery scheme doesn't feed people, or cure disease, they brainwash
people into believing DEI and Trans issues are the most important things in the world.

@jshm2 Americans don't buy anything purely Made in America because simply the cost. At the 30 plus dollars an hour we get, who could?

You are the one living in 1950, still getting $2.50 an hour and expecting to compete in a global Economy.
