Does Iran matter?

Israel says Iran wants to destroy it. This is being used as justification for military action and possible war, which could have devastating consequences. Iran lacks the capability to destroy Israel, so why doesn't Israel ignore Iran and leave it alone?
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
It’s challenging to ignore a country that wants to destroy your own, and finances terrorist groups it stir violence.

When Iran aren’t threatening Isreal they attack international shipping. Iran is an account that needs settling.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@emiliya You’ve avoid the point again. If you’re going to keep doing that there’s really no point continuing.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@emiliya You seem to miss an underlying cultural point here. Unlike all the other Arab nations, Iran is different. These people are "Persians" and see themselves as a great and seperate civilization. They were on a western path under the Shah, but after that they became a strong theocracy, and all the while saw themselves as seperate. Now they simply fund local arab resistence in countries in the region, and encourage aggression against any pro western efforts. This Proxy aggression is cheaper and more effective than a front attack, which they will lose. If push comes to shove, Israel will simply remove Iran from the map. But that will require the permission of America to do it. That Israel is being brutal against the Palestinians is not at issue. They surely are. But all this is in response to acts of aggression from withing Palestine, or Lebanon. All using locals as human shields. Its a brutal dirty horrible situation on both sides.. 😷
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@emiliya ever the no about "self defense?"
Howardtaylor · 61-69, MVIP
Because Iran wants to eliminate Israel off the face of the earth and has its proxies fire rockets at Israel everyday
emiliya · 22-25, F
@Howardtaylor "Iran wants..."

This is irrelevant. Iran is not able to destroy Israel or attack it without significant retaliation. Israel should stop provoking Iran and continue to deal with rockets from Hamas with their defense system. Attacking Iran when Iran is unable to eliminate them or come close to eliminating them is wrong and endangers the rest of the world. We do not want nuclear weapons to be used again.
Ontheroad · M
Let me get this straight. Israel should be okay with Iran for supporting and encouraging Hamas who constantly attacks Israel... is that it?

@robb65 It was not unprovoked, but I dislike all war. It can sometimes be inevitable. In this circumstance, the West has been provoking Russia for a very long time. USA has interfered in Ukraine and Ukraine has mistreated Russians who live in the east. Lugansk and Donetsk are not ruled by Kiev and have had pro Russian leadership since 2014. Russia and Ukraine are very different to Iran and Israel. These places share a culture, people, and language. It is a great shame we are at war, as we are very close and have far more in common than not.

What does Israel share with the rest of Middle East? They are a westernized country with western interests, culturally and politically isolated from their neighbors and certainly from Iran.
emiliya · 22-25, F
@Ontheroad Why do you say I'm a propaganda troll? How do you expect me to respond?
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
Might it possibly be because the ruling ayatollahs in Iran won't leave Israel alone...? 🤔
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@emiliya

I think the ayatollahs sponsor this terrorism because they would like to eliminate the "Little Satan" from the river to the sea.
Failing in that, they will cause as much terror in Israel as they possibly can.

And the Iranians that Israel has covertly assassinated have been people in leadership positions that posed direct tactical or strategic threats to Israel.
emiliya · 22-25, F
@Thinkerbell Does the world revolve around Israel?

Why do you justify assassination?

The sad part is that Iran was an ally, until the US removed their duly elected leader.

The youth of Iran are very westernized...too bad their religious fanatical Mullah's run things. Perhaps the Grim Reaper can make a few house calls.
JSul3 · 70-79
@samueltyler2 Does Gaza matter?
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@JSul3 what are you asking now? Do Gazan's matter of course they do. Do Israel's matter? Is Israel's reaction perhaps too much, perhaps. But, if Hamas continues to declare, from the river to the sea and refuses to accept a 2 state solution where do we go? Again, what does that have to do with the OP?
emiliya · 22-25, F
@samueltyler2 JSul3 is correct. Britain and USA did help to organize a coup in 1953 and this led to the Iranian shah's power being restored. Iran's history in relation to present circumstances is very relevant to the OP.

The shah was good and bad, but it is indisputable that he was favored by the West as he was amenable to the West. He was prepared to westernize Iran, which he did to some extent. In some ways they benefited from his projects with USA, and in other ways they did not. Iran was making many profits from oil by early 1970s, but people did not feel it was being distributed properly. USA was benefiting because the shah had split oil revenues with them from 1954.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
Israel will simply "Neutralize" Iran when America gives the word.. This is the trade off with the US over their (Israels) nuclear program. Israel takes out Iran and gives the US plausable deniability..Israel takes the international heat on that in exchange for weapons aid ongoing..😷
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@samueltyler2 I could go somewhere with how simple it is to brainwash Americans. But its unfair to some..In my opinion it has its roots in religion and the consumer society and the nexus. Now throw in PT Barnum..😷
emiliya · 22-25, F
@samueltyler2 “That support is under strain because of the behavior of Israel's PM.”

What is the behavior of Israel's PM, and why has it strained America's support of Israel? Israel and USA are best friends. Israel is full of American Jews, and American Jews love to visit Israel. USA has allowed Israel to kill thousands of civilians in Gaza.

@JSul3 “Sadly there are religious fanatics here in the USA, rooting for it.”

Religious fanatics are not the problem. It is people, some of them our leaders, who are indifferent to the possible use of nuclear weapons. They include those who advocate intervention in Ukraine, and those who support Israel attacking Iran. Do they care if it leads to nuclear exchange?
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
This has been going on for thousands of years. You might not believe history, but here is a link to Britanica's d scription of how Persia attacked and displaced Jews from the area.

samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@SDavis i am sorry i even brought it up, 1600 years is more than a thousand, so i have a right to call it that, but I was also referring to all of the times the Jews were attacked prior to the common era. It is arguable what countries you will call those who did such, including the Romans.
SDavis · 56-60, F
@samueltyler2

thousands mean more than one and less than one is not more than one.

You were in error to try to correct me in my usage of the word hundreds.

I was not referring to all the times that Israel has been at war in the land that they occupy.

I was referring to their direct interactions of war with the ancestors of and the people who are now called Iranians.
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@samueltyler2

"Babylon was actually part of Persia."

Babylon was NOT part of Persia when the Babylonians destroyed the First Temple, sacked Jerusalem and exiled many Jews to Babylon in 587 BCE.

..."the Persian persecution of the Jews:"

I have no doubt that there were occasions during the course of the intervening thousands of years that Persians persecuted Jews, but the Babylonian captivity (587-539 BCE) was NOT one of them.

Psalm 137 (KJV)

1 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.

2 We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.

3 For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.

4 How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a strange land?

5 If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.

6 If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

7 Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof.

8 O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.

9 Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.
Matt85 · 36-40, M
emiliya · 22-25, F
@Matt85 Can you elaborate?
Matt85 · 36-40, M
@emiliya Like, we already got enough wars going on.

A writer of history is a historian. That's where people learn.

You can say the Bible isn't historical facts if you choose. But there are many many archaeological findings that support what the Bible has said.

War armed conflict between nations = two or more sides fighting each other - something you can look up. Since the Bible you feel is inaccurate.

I decided to list two or three Conquest without war

Hitler took Austria and the Sudetenland Czechoslovakia unopposed

USSR took the Baltic States in 1949 basically unopposed

The Dutch took England unopposed - 1688

The Green March The Moroccans / Spanish Sahara / Polisario Front 1975 ( they gain control without war but more later that year war broke out from 1975 to 1991)

And there is more in history but it really doesn't matter to you I said enough goodbye.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
You can't be serious! Iran has more than enough capability. It has been using surrogates so far, but could launch a frank attack. The ability to mutually destroy each other may be preventing that.
emiliya · 22-25, F
@samueltyler2 Israel would stop any attack from Iran. The one to strike first would be Israel. Iran does not have capability to destroy or come close to destroying Israel. This idea is used by Israel to justify attacking Iran, which they have been wanting to do for years.
emiliya · 22-25, F
@GeriatricMuff What does Geri think?
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
Sounds like a great spot to go on vacation to.
How can a non viable state expect eternal infinite resources. Talk about a welfare state. The US has broken treaties with other tribes. Might be time to do it again.
SDavis · 56-60, F
Iran has openly expressed his hatred towards Israel for decades.

Iran does not feel that the Israelites should exist.

This is not the first conflict they've had in these modern days.

And if you go back far enough people that lived in those lands have been in conflict with each other for hundreds of years.

samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@SDavis of course, there was no State of Israel until 1948. As to whether the Jews fought wars, that is more semantic than fact. The history of that area is full of violence.
SDavis · 56-60, F
@samueltyler2 the Bible list the countries that Israel was at war with the Bible list the countries that conquered Israel without war.

History list the Nations that conquered Israel without war after the Roman occupation.

Tell the historians whether what they write is in fact. The war Israel had with Iran is well documented.

And Israel goes back further than 1948 they took their land back from the Iranians. And quite frankly most Israelites that occupy the land of Israel today are not the Hebrews of the ancient land of Israel.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@SDavis I don;t know which historians you mean, and the bible is a sort of oral history, not necessarily historical fact. We will have to agree to disagree that the difference between a full out war and a conquering is pure semantics.

Basically because the political parties in both Israel and Iran are under pressure to keep their support at home.
