I haven't made a post for a long time

And I don't have anything much of interest to say.

BUT! I have a mundane complaint. It costs 30p now for a plastic bag from the supermarket. In how many years has it gone from a penny, to 2p, 5p, 10p?

I'm in favour of the idea and the reasons and I usually bring bags to re-use when I plan to go to the shops. Anyway, it just caught me by surprise 🤷‍♀️

Doesn't surprise me, making a profit out of regulation. And you are paying 30p to carry their logo around with you 😐
Ambroseguy80 · 56-60, M
Up until recently, bags were always free here in the US. The grocery store we use now charges 15¢ per paper bag with handles.
i remember the days when the cashier or bag boy/girl would put your groceries in bags for you....doesn't happen any more. (well in my country, anyway)
@NativePortlander1970 i wish we still had baggers. some people take there sweetass time, which drives me nuts
@beermeplease At Cub and Food4Less they had split lanes so that the slower patrons wouldn't feel rushed, but yes, even with those there were always some that made a sloth seem like Speedy Gonzales.
RedBaron · M
@beermeplease They do that here in NYC.

We are not allowed to have plastic bags in the town where I live. We have to pay 10 cents each for a paper bag. I believe we are being "encouraged" to bring our own re-usable bags to the store.
helsbels · 31-35, F
@4meAndyou That's ok until it rains or.you have a heavy shop. I am not against bringing your own to reduce usage, it's just annoying when you 'pop in' and don't have a choice.
4meAndyou · F
@helsbels Rain is the WORST. I won't go shopping when it is raining for that reason.

I keep plastic stacking crates in the car - empty straight from the trolley, then at home carry the crate into the house. I seldom - if ever - go shopping without planning to lol! 🤗
helsbels · 31-35, F
@ArtieKat Great idea for driving. I usually just adopt an 'I can only buy it if I can carry it' rule 🤣
ArtieKat · M
@helsbels Fair enough!

My local supermarket doesn't even carry plastic bags anymore. That have paper bags and they charge 10 cents per bag. Not great when walking. I almost never forget to bring my tote bags but it happens.

Retail is screwed.
Still recoiling from high expense import costs they're still only making money to cover overheads.

So they're bumping prices on the essentials and saying it's for x y z reasons when in fact it's because customers are spending less; reducing what they now consider 'luxury' items.

Plastic bags don't last like they used to.
They're made thinner and weaker by design.
Either because the company is taking reducing it's carbon footprint costs in line with regulations seriously, or because they know that there'll always be customers who'll pay up no matter what they charge.

@helsbels it is a rip off in british supermarkets when we do a big shop wetake our own out of principle

@smiler2012
we take our own out of principle
That's the purpose of the high price, to encourage people to re-use bags.
Huckleberry42 · 41-45, M
Depending on where you live it's the same here in the US. Still unnecessary.
Jonjdw · 51-55, M
It where I shop. Bags are free except Aldi
@Jonjdw But you can use all the empty boxes you can, that aren't already taken by others, and don't forget your quarter.
shakemeup · 36-40
My mom would say that will teach you to remember your reusable bags next time.

I keep mine in handy locations like on a hook in my kitchen so I can grab it if I'm walking or taking public trans to a store. One in my cubby at work. A few in my car in case I'm driving.
BearDownChicago · 41-45, M
And the funny thing is, prices on goods do not decrease. You’d think that by passing on the cost of bags to consumer would decrease marginally the price of goods or at least a credit when checking out. But nope. Pure profit
RedBaron · M
But any type of convenience costs money if you think about it, and how do you know that the store’s cost for the bags hasn’t risen as well?

And if you’re spending a fair amount on the purchase, why quibble over a few cents?
OldBrit · 61-69, M
Part of the reason is that plastic bag usage has plummeted. So now it's more expensive for companies to manufacture and distribute them. Lower consumption therefore price increases.
Mudkip · 31-35, M
Only blokes would spend 30p on a plastic bag... jk jk
Mudkip · 31-35, M
@helsbels you always check the cupboard! That's happened to me haha, I buy a bloody bag when I had one already
helsbels · 31-35, F
@Mudkip oh I know I have them, but if I'm out and just think 'I need a couple of things'..
Mudkip · 31-35, M
@helsbels yeah same, i sometimes just think i wouldnt end up needing them
Also..EVERYTHING else is the supermarket is wrapped in plastic...but they make you pay for a plastic bag when you check out -____-
pdockal · 56-60, M
It's ridiculous
Free Paper bags from recycled materials is the best answer
jefferson · M
i always bring a bag, and 30 p isnt what it used to be,
AstroZombie · 36-40, M
Welcome back.
HotPizza71 · 51-55, M
And( hi by the way 👋) the value chocolate was 30p,is now 60p grrrrr
helsbels · 31-35, F
@HotPizza71 Hi 😄 Yeah, all these little things 'only' going up by 30p here, 30p there... it's too much
Moneyonmymind · 31-35, M
My local grocery store no longer Carey’s plastic bags, I bring my own reusable bags
Insane greed is what it is
helsbels · 31-35, F
@NativePortlander1970 I think it has reduced plastic usage, and waste so it has worked, but now it does just seem like a tax and a profit making idea.
@helsbels Exactly, capitalism is out of control
