If a convicted murderer/rapist/molester serving a lengthy sentence has expressed a desire to end his life......

should the state or govt honor his wishes and allow him to end his own life ?? What are your thoughts ??
Or is it the fact that he doesn't want to finish paying for what he did, a cop out?
Magenta · F
@LadyGrace Right?! Why should he get anything he desires??
@Magenta Exactly.
BlueVeins · 22-25
Yes. Everyone has a right to die, and it's a win-win since this would save taxpayer money. My only condition is that they should have to wait a month before going through with it just so it's not a spur of the moment thing.

Obviously, this would be cutting their sentence short, but death is punishment enough.
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
Why is it necessary to ask the governor?

Do it the old fashioned way and hang yourself in your cell.

Or make your behavior so disruptive to the other prisoners that they will want to shank you.

Every time, somebody wants something done, they always want the government to do it for them. People lack motivation these days.....
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
No.
If you denied somebody else the right to determine their own path in life why should you get to determine your own having committed the crime ?
pentacorn · F
@Picklebobble2 exactly. no concessions
It would be good business to do so.

Saves tax payers money in the long run.

However. I’m a big supporter of the torture system. So I’m a bit conflicted on this.

Serving a time in a box is not good enough. Rapists. Murders and molesters should be tortured 24/7 just to the tipping point of death and then backed off just a little.

But all the cry babies don’t let that happen so here we are. Caring for convicts and barbarians better than Vets or people who genuinely are on hard times.

😑
@Teggy Waterboard them
@NativePortlander1970 ooo that’s one of oh so many fun games to play through out the day 😁
thats just an easy way out lol.
ive just watched a case yesterday about a murderer being caught when he's already 75 yo and ailing and he wished to be granted of death penalty but the prosecutors denied it. he's serving his remaining life in prison but the kicker was, he died of natural causes several months after.
pentacorn · F
no. he should serve the sentence he's earned
pentacorn · F
@NativePortlander1970 that's not true. and the death penalty has never proven to be a deterrent
@pentacorn This CBS article proves you wrong.

@NativePortlander1970 ok

now you're wrong. enjoy

you get convicted of those crimes, in my mind they forfeited their lives. They should be put to death and it shouldnt take 10 years on death row to do it.
let them rot
Musicman · 61-69, M
I wouldn't have any problems with that. It costs a lot of money to incarcerate someone yearly. Also it would free up space for a new criminal.
spjennifer · 56-60, T
As a taxpayer I can see the reasoning where it's a waste of our money to house them in prison for life, but there's also a reason why it's called punishment for crimes committed and them committing suicide is just a way for them to get out of their punishment early. If they are permitted, it should be done humanely like slaughterhouses do to animals, bolt gun to the head then cremate the remains and flush them or put in a compost pile... 🤨
JustNik · 51-55, F
Yep. I see no reason to force them to allow us to sustain them when they would rather just exit the stage.
hasnt he got a bed sheet and a malfunctioning security camera?

sheesh..
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
No, you do not have a right to commit suicide.
deadgerbil · 22-25
Sure

But my big issue would be with the method of death. Usually it's lethal injection and that nonsense costs taxpayers millions of dollars just for them to mess it up or something

There's no legit excuse to have to use drugs. They can just automate death and have a gun rigged up to something and shoot them in the head
AlchemyFox · 36-40, F
Yes. Let them go.

After working in a prison and being present while someone was put to death, let them go. The liability they cause, the tax payers dollars they use, and hey, some people can't handle the time they have to do. I don't blame them, because it's rough and inhumane.
DiegoWolfe · 36-40
no he needs to keep living
fishescycle · 26-30
No.

1 The realisation of his/her wishes is a transgression.

2. Conviction doesn't necessarily mean guilt. The desire to end one's life might be an act of desperation in the face of injustice and should be taken into consideration.
vanquishedfoe · 22-25, M
It should be up to the victim or the next of kin to decide. If they can't be consulted then it should be referred to an internal hearing and should be based on the convict's general conduct. It should be seen as a privilege.
4meAndyou · F
If he is on death row, that's a given. If not, let him suffer life in prison. That is his punishment, and those whose lives he ruined will not receive one jot of relief from pandering to his infantile wishes.
InHeaven · F
No. God will end his life when its Gods time. All our problems stem from the godless government trying to play God. These satanists constantly decide who should live and who should not.
If they have served more than half of their sentence , the request should be considered for review and executed as per panel's decision.
Strict4u · 56-60, M
Yes no need in feeding him wasting tax payers money and I think if they committed a crime like that the death sentence is what they should have got to start with
I’m confused. What’s stopping them? The State? They want to respect the law suddenly? If they wanted to do it, I’m sure they’d find a way without “permission.”
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
Absolutely. Kill them off and make room for people in prison who have a chance to get better, like criminals who stole money or did drugs.

I think all people have a right to end their life. Like others said, it lessens the burden in the prison system.
Ontheroad · M
Hmmm, maybe, but I'm more for allowing permanent solitary confinement... or maybe semi-solitary. With bubba.
TexChik · F
Tie him to a chair and let his victims flip a coin to see who gets the honor…
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
Yes. Release him into general population. His life will be ended...one way or the other.
No. I believe death is any easy way out. They should stay and suffer.
JovialMoose · 46-50, M
Only if they forgo their 8th amendment right rights.
TheGreatLeveler · 31-35, M
Yes, but I think that should count for all people, not just inmates.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
I'd argue there are fates worse than death.
Anyway, from friends I know who have been in jail or prison, child molesters don't last long, they usually get shanked. They're seen as the lowest of the low. I'd argue it's up to them if they want to take their lives, but is it really penitence?

As to execution or torture, I'm against that.
Even for child molesters. Not because they don't deserve it, they do, but because I don't think the state should have power over life and death.
pentacorn · F
bugeye · 26-30, F
sure. but only after he has served his sentence.
That’s a tough one. I wouldn’t be inclined to give him any "breaks" from the mandated penalty, and arguably, that would be a huge one.

You probably know that in the past one could be criminally prosecuted and imprisoned for attempting suicide.

Even now, someone on Death Row who is caught attempting suicide will be saved, so that the state can lawfully end his life.
