It never really came up as am issue when I lived in Texas. Basically everyone believed in corporal punishment, and some even believed it should be present in school. Things are waaaaay different in Washington State (where I live now) so I'm just trying to see where people overall seem to fall, since my previous view of "basically everyone agrees with it" was clearly biased based on where I lived.

I do think they need to clarify what is or isn't abuse. "Corporal punishment" could be anything from a smack on the wrist to beating your kid half to death. So when that's not clarified, you have some people saying it's illegal to slap your kid on the wrist, while others use it not being outlawed as an excuse to abuse. So it definitely leads to misunderstandings. It either needs to be clarified state by state at the very least
"Not made illegal, but should have very clear boundaries..." is the side of the fence I sit at. Some parents border on abuse when including the use of objects, e.g. extension cords, shoes, hangers. A firm swat of the backside or a stinging smack on the back of the hand is a communication I believe young(er) children (whom cannot be reasoned with) can greatly benefit from.

If anyone isn’t convinced that spanking your kids is wrong
Just think about the fact that every spanking fetish person on this site was spanked
Is that really what you want for your kids?
To have them spend all day on some random Q and A site talking about it
@JRVanguard RIGHT

I am against it on children, beyond the level of a slap on the hand of an infant to stop them putting their fingers in a fire or mouse trap. I would, however like to see the parents who fail to control and socialize their children properly in public flogged.

@whowasthatmaskedman Couldn't agree more.

Personally, I wish parents used a little more structure and discipline when raising kids. A little more hard work and a whole lot less entitlement would do those children a world of good too.

I think the father should decide
Lucyy · 22-25, F
@MrsPeterEvans eh. I don't particularly agree with that one, since when I have kids they're mine just as much as they're my husband's,and it is also up to me how they are raised and punished. And if I say nobody is putting their hands on them, that inckudes my husband😂 in general I think it should come down to The parents, not the government, but the government should clarify what is or isn't abuse so you don't see as many parents taking it too far. It's a very gray area as to what is or isn't okay.

Yes ! I think it’s traumatic and abusive. And I think you failed as a parent if you can’t talk to your kid and result to physical punishments. My mum never hit me and I turned out to be a decent adult and I got grounded and told off.

Corporal punishment was banned in our area during my time at school. I saw a lot of abuse with adult teachers abusing and singling out students they did not like. Male teachers hitting female students made no sense. If this had occurred outside of school the adult would have been arrested. However, being teachers they hid behind their job as a outlet for their abuse.
Lucyy · 22-25, F
@CM440 I've heard a lot of similar things from my Godmom, who went to school on england and saw a lot of abuse as a result of corporal punishment being used. I don't see any need for it in schools tbh. Like in high school, there were definitely teachers who GRADED with bias, or called kids out with bias. Can't imagine if that bias was being addressed physically.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
Isn't it already?
@HairbrushDiva No, it couldn’t, because under this administration it won’t be.
People are protesting now because they don’t want to stay inside, they don’t want to wear masks, they want to go back to work, to the beach, to their hairstylists, to parties and crowded worship services, just as if the first 5 months of 2020 never happened. And right now our president is so concerned about being re-elected, he’s passing on misinformation that is giving these people hope that they’re free to do this—in spite of the fact that the deaths continue.
This is what we’re dealing with right now.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@bijouxbroussard I was talking about life before the virus, not life during it.
@HairbrushDiva It doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Two words:
“States’ Rights”.
Lucyy · 22-25, F
@TryingtoLava I think it's a fair question when the majority of people in the USA say that they've used corporal punishment at some point tbh. And it obviously varies based on where you live, because in Texas I literally net NOBODY against it. Then we get to Washington and people so against to it primarily. Obviously opinions vary a lot
AmmieBell · 18-21, F
@Lucyy and even in WA it varies a lot honestly. It's mainly cities that are against it. But suburban areas are divided, and farmland areas tend to be all for it.
Lucyy · 22-25, F
@AmmieBell I feel like some states have to disagree way more. Like parents still openly will smack their kids here sometimes and I low-key feel like that would lead to an arrest in super liberal states? But I have no idea really since I've basically only been to Washington and Texas
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
I think it needs to be better defined. I don't like it, but I do know times where it has been necessary. Different children honestly react better and worse to different forms of discipline. Used too freely, however, it can instill a sense that violence is how problems get solved. A society that embraces corporal punishment is most often a more violent society.
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
Oh great, another Spanko!! 🤦‍♀️
Lucyy · 22-25, F
@Harriet03 you realize that this is a genuine thing that happens right? It's even a thing in some schools in the US still. The fact that it comes up doesn't automatically make someone a "spanko", because it's an actual topic that people don't agree on. And frankly in a house with MY cultural background, whether or not it's okay wouldn't even come up, because the idea as to whether or not it's okay is based on cultural, regional, and generational influences. So the fact that something that actually exists and is still widely used comes up doesn't make someone a "spanko", even if you can't get past connecting it to a "kink" in your mind lmao
@Lucyy That’s mostly who discusses the topic on this site. Even people supposedly “sharing parenting tips” describe in cringeworthy detail that make it clear they’re getting off on it. 😒

I’m very conflicted about it, because I think it’s abuse.
And some especially sick, perverted people get off on beating their kids. There are plenty of that sort on this site, and they even brag about it.
They shouldn’t have children. 🙁
Lucyy · 22-25, F
@bijouxbroussard can I ask (and genuinely, I'm not trying to be sarcastic at all lol) if you think it's abuse, why are you conflicted? Wouldn't you just naturally say then that it should be banned?
@Lucyy In your survey, I chose the third option. I know how I feel about it, but swatting a child who’s not listening, without feeling the need to undress or humiliate them, or doing it while you’re angry, might be appropriate. No one but a sexual predator would undress and beat their teenager, though. As someone else pointed out, people grow up and this becomes a sexual fetish, which is kind of sick.
