It never really came up as am issue when I lived in Texas. Basically everyone believed in corporal punishment, and some even believed it should be present in school. Things are waaaaay different in Washington State (where I live now) so I'm just trying to see where people overall seem to fall, since my previous view of "basically everyone agrees with it" was clearly biased based on where I lived.

Isn't it already?
@HairbrushDiva No. It’s illegal in some schools now.

@bijouxbroussard Why only some schools? Surely it should be either all schools or none. But not "some".
@HairbrushDiva In the U.S., different states run their schools based upon state laws. Public schools are governed by their states. Private schools get the consent of the parents, and some parents agree to that.

@bijouxbroussard No wonder the US is in such a mess. I thought it was all down to Trump, but you've just proved to me it's not only because of him. Now I can see the obvious solution to make America great again, and that's to make sure all "state laws" are the same from one state to another, with not a tiny particle of difference between any. It doesn't matter who does that as long as someone does.
@HairbrushDiva If you don’t live here, you can’t understand—Trump’s supporters are on the side of “state’s rights”. But not everyone wants strangers beating their children. With some adults that would become an excuse to molest them. So yeah, we have problems. But having the freedom to choose how our children are raised isn’t one. The cost of schooling and the availability of resources and local teachers—that’s the concern. It was an issue before Trump, will be one after him.

@bijouxbroussard Why wouldn't it be an ideal solution to abolish corporal punishment in all states? That way they'd all be equal, there would be no strangers beating anyone's children and as far as I can see everyone would be happy with that. What am I overlooking that I could only make allowances for by living there?
@HairbrushDiva I’d be fine with that, but it gets back to “state’s rights”. A lot of states don’t think the federal government should be able to dictate how people raise their children, especially in places like the southern states. They pride themselves on “old-fashioned values”, like “spare the rod, spoil the child”, etc.

@bijouxbroussard That's the trouble. There's always someone who has to complicate things. I would like to see the USA live up to its name the United States of America where each state is equal to every other. It's the only way to eliminate conflict between one state and another, and the only way to achieve equality. If I'm wrong, please suggest another way to achieve equality among the states.
@HairbrushDiva There isn’t, because people won’t do that. Individualism is more important overall. State’s rights is why some states have the death penalty, and others don’t feel they need it. It’s why some states allow medical and even recreational cannabis consumption and in others it’s still illegal. Some issues are ultimately moved to federal Supreme Court where they may become federal law, that all states must accept. But many states have their own cultures and their own way of doing things. Generally, the Supreme Court gets involved when people are being deprived of civil rights.

@bijouxbroussard I don't know how the people cope with all that. I couldn't. I'm just glad I don't live there but I feel sorry for those who have to put up with all that confusion. Can't everything be dealt with by the Federal Supreme Court? That would be something.
@HairbrushDiva No, it couldn’t, because under this administration it won’t be.
People are protesting now because they don’t want to stay inside, they don’t want to wear masks, they want to go back to work, to the beach, to their hairstylists, to parties and crowded worship services, just as if the first 5 months of 2020 never happened. And right now our president is so concerned about being re-elected, he’s passing on misinformation that is giving these people hope that they’re free to do this—in spite of the fact that the deaths continue.
This is what we’re dealing with right now.

@bijouxbroussard I was talking about life before the virus, not life during it.
@HairbrushDiva It doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Two words:
“States’ Rights”.
