Do advertisements persuade you into buying things?

To me they're hellaciously annoying and infiltrating every crevice of my brain. Everywhere I look they're flashing in my face, insultingly, insinuatingly targeted at my demographic.

I hardly notice them. I only watch TV without them (easy in the UK) or record things I like and fast forward through the ads, have an effective ad blocker online, and pay YouTube not to show me their commercials. I see print ads, but rarely take notice of them. I've cancelled my subscriptions to those who insist on showing me ads. If I want to buy something, I'll go looking on line or better still, in a real-life shop.
The main thing ads persuade me into buying is the ad-free version of the service!

My wife & I like to watch some sports on TV, but we watch thru a DVR. So we'll start watching a game an hour after they start playing the game. And then we use the skip 30 sec button to jump thru all the 3 min blocks of ads. When the Olympics come on we pay for Peacock and stream events and jump over most of the yackety-yacking.

Sometimes Instagram ads for clothing brands make me check out that brand's website and see if there's anything for me. Occasionally there has been. That's about it though. I ignore/skip ads whenever possible.

Advertisement is wasted on me. I don't care if these free apps that let us chat and make free video calls almost anywhere in the world make money selling my browsing history to advertisers. But I do wish they'd sell it to smarter advertisers who would understand that I'm not likely going to buy something from them that i already bought when I was looking for it earlier.
A life of austerity/frugality, has a neutralizing effect.
I don't have cable and I barely go into stores, or malls.
So , for me, this is not a problem.

What you just described is how we know we are not viewed as people, but viewed as consumers.
ScreamingFox · 41-45, F
@calicuz 💯

Actually i hardly ever am influence by ads. Once though, an ad went by on email and I fell for it, happily it was real. I ordered a gross of roses for $99 USD.

The sheer prevalence and invasiveness of ads was one of the things that led me to question whether our economic system was healthy for our culture.
ScreamingFox · 41-45, F
@ViciDraco I tend to think it's not at all. Its kinda miserable.
Almost never. I tend to use commercials as an opportunity to do something else. But one of the things I like about VIP is not seeing ads here.

Only once that I can remember.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Not much unless it’s something I’m already wanting and there is a decent price on it.
thepeculiarpanda · 36-40, M
Nope, they usually turn me off to products more than anything.
ScreamingFox · 41-45, F
@thepeculiarpanda this. There's no way to escape them. It's getting to be too much.
thepeculiarpanda · 36-40, M
@ScreamingFox Has been for quite a while now unfortunately. 😕
No. They actually have the opposite effect on me!
faery · 31-35, F
If I feel bombarded by a particular ad, I will seek out their direct competitor

I use adb locks on everything that I can
Sroonaka616 · 31-35, M
No most of the time they persuade me into not buying them.
Livingwell · 61-69, M
Not at all. Annoying actually.

Blondily · F
