Do advertisements persuade you into buying things?

To me they're hellaciously annoying and infiltrating every crevice of my brain. Everywhere I look they're flashing in my face, insultingly, insinuatingly targeted at my demographic.

Advertisement is wasted on me. I don't care if these free apps that let us chat and make free video calls almost anywhere in the world make money selling my browsing history to advertisers. But I do wish they'd sell it to smarter advertisers who would understand that I'm not likely going to buy something from them that i already bought when I was looking for it earlier.
