Do you refrigerate your peanut butter?

There once was a very good reason to refrigerate peanut butter. And there still is, IF you make your own and don't use any preservatives.

I have actually have made my own peanut butter. And yes I had to refrigerate it.

Peanut butter without any kind of preservatives goes Rancid, if not refrigerated. And it doesn't take very long to go rancid.

It's becomes poisonous!

What you buy in the stores almost always has preservatives!

Now you can freeze home made peanut butter. And that would protect it from becoming rancid.

My own home made peanut butter!

@DeWayfarer Whats the recipe?
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@DanielsASJ about 3 lbs of shelled pistachios nuts, another two pounds of shelled peanuts. A cup of peanut oil and a very strong blender. And I do mean a stong one because it will over heat!

You don't want to put too much peanut oil because it will become runny. And runny peanut butter becomes rancid easily. It's mostly the oil that goes bad.

Yes. I think it would go off quite quickly is kept in the cupboard at room temperature, though the storage advice is simply "cool, dry place".

I eat it so infrequently I've still half a jar left, four months after its Best Before date.

I enjoy organic PB and do not refrigerate it.

It's in the pantry and because I enjoy it almost daily, a jar only last 10-14 days.

Some yes and some no. I usually buy the aldi one or Santa Cruz (I think their ingredients are peanuts and sea salt) and I don’t refrigerate either, though I do go through it quickly. Right now I have crazy Richard’s (100% peanuts) in the fridge and pb2 pure (100% peanut powder) in the cabinet.

Nope. Peanut butter is blended with oil...sometimes with peanut oil, but the cheaper varieties may contain other oils. It's important for peanut butter to stay smooth and spread evenly over bread without clumping, therefore it should not be refrigerated.

Not the stuff from the supermarket. I eat so much of it a jar doesn't last a week. If i get the organic kind from Whole Foods then I have to refrigerate it.
ArtieKat · M
No. I did at one time but it's very difficult to spread - and it really doesn't need to be refrigerated.

I do, but only after I open it. I've heard you don't have to, but I don't take a chance.

HumanEarth · F

LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@HumanEarth I'm going to say mouth, just to ward off any less wholesome comments, lol.
Any sealed container needs to be refrigerated once it’s been opened..

Write that down ✊🏻
@cherokeepatti Or heinz ketchup, or bbq sauce, or honey, or butter once put on a plate, etc.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@NativePortlander1970 butter needs to consumed if it’s out on a plate
@cherokeepatti I never let it go past four days at the most.
What kind of blasphemy is this?!
@PrincessVelvet Read my own comment.
Yes. Seems to maintain its taste when I do. It goes rancid otherwise.
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
I don't even LIKE peanut butter. 🤮
No... does anyone?

Seems like it's thick enough without being made cold and becoming even thicker
Absolutely not lol ⚠
Natural peanut butter yes. Skippy type no.
Yourwildestdreams · 51-55, M
Yes because it’s all natural, no additives 😊
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
No, too hard to easily scoop out of the jar if I did that
My mother did, and when I was nine I got up early to make my Dad's lunch, the cold hard pb kept ripping the bread, so I would throw it away, by the time I threw out most of the loaf I was bawling my eyes out, so my Dad called off work, called me outbof school, we went to breakfast, went to the zoo and the science and industry museum, then to Star Wars, it was still playing at our local in 1979, the owner bought a copy and kept it playing. When we got home my mother was screeching like a harpy, "Why is the peanut butter out and a loaf of bread worth in the garbage!!!!!!" To which my Dad said, "It stays in the cupboard from now on." and left it at that.
DanielsASJ · 36-40, M
@NativePortlander1970 Your dad was considerate and accomodative.

Only peanut butter which lacks preservatives requires refrigeration after opening, otherwise the oils will separate and will go rancid if left at room temperature.
MethDozer · M
@swirlie even natural peanut butter will be fine without refrigeration. You don't refrigerate you're vegetable oil do you? Same thing. Besides it separates no matter what you do if t doesn't have emulsifiers
swirlie · F
@MethDozer
No, I freeze my vegetable oil, then melt it in the microwave when I need it.
