McDonald's says they may have to shut down California locations over $20 an hour minimum wage. I hope they do.

There are plenty of food truck venues that will gladly upgrade to a defunct Burger joint that fast. With better food and prices compared to the current state of McDonald's prices.

If a business will not pay its workers a wage on which they can support themselves, it is a drain on the public purse and its closure is no loss to society.

@SunshineGirl

Cut loose the apron strings of the state and let McD feel the chill winds of the free market

Great idea. So let the joints pay workers what they are worth - cool winds of the free market

@pdockal @Slade

Companies which implicitly rely upon social security to prevent their low paid workers from starving or sleeping rough are not sustainable and benefit no one but their owners in the long run. It is ultimately for the customer to decide what labour is worth, not the corporation. If rising wages and living standards are distributed equitably, there is no reason why a local market will not bear the additional cost.

Whether the low quality 'product' is worth it is another matter altogether . .

The CEOs should take a pay cut, NOT raise their prices. It's corporate greed you should be mad at, NOT the workers who just want a living wage.
@DearAmbellina2113 Most McDonald's are franchises where the owners are barely breaking even.

Do you know what McDonald's gross profit for 2023 was?
$14.5 BILLION.
Do you you why they're mouthing off about CA locations? It's because they don't want the rest of the country to get smart, take care of it's people and cut in to their $14.5 billion in PROFIT.
McDonald's screws their customers and their workers. And they do it by serving poison.
pdxlinux · 41-45, M
yes you're pointing out that people have to cooperate to eliminate pests and not expect gov to do everything for them. also, some reports are already coming out that the restaurants that do pay $20 per hour found out that they could get better employees and it is paying off for them already. so i'm with you, and recognize that the consumers all have to recognize the opportunity also.

Mom & Pop type businesses should be a lot more profitable. Not as much overhead with a food truck. I’m old enough to remember tiny hamburger and fried chicken stands (tiny little buildings with a picnic table or two to sit down and eat) being able to compete with fast food restaurants and the food was tasty at those little stands. They didn’t have to pay much for utilities, hire wait staff, have a lot of furnishings & fixtures, and ran those places efficiently.
@cherokeepatti McDonald’s destroyed all the takeaway shops each time the moved in right next door.
Nobody could understand why the local council would let them in a small town anyway… knowing it’s the death of local business
Cough cough $$$

Classic auzzie movie if you ever get the chance!

cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout yeah exactly that. With a little chunk of change new business ordinances get passed that help to bury small businesses. I’ve seen this happen bit-by-bit here in my city. Every new ordinance costs money and it’s hard enough for people to start out new businesses as it is.
@cherokeepatti then Bunnings hardware moved in and their slogan is Theyl beat any competitor by 10%
Goodbye local hardware stores.
I’m old enough to remember mum going to a butcher. A baker, a grocer, milk was delivered.
All them small bizz a gone to the supermarket.
Owned by foreigners who don’t even vote local…

Regardless of the economic argument, nobody will miss McDonald’s.
Alabamarednek · 36-40, M
@jehova the situation is like a square city block sizes building that is on fire 🔥

And everyone thinks a single engine crew of firefighters going all in the main street entrance as all it takes to save the day.

Whem in fact, it takes a 5 alarm task force entering main street, A street, B streed and back street with all resources.

Minimum wage hike with a Wall street break up would free up the market forcing competition. Getting corporations out of the rental market and driving a fast sell would help consumers by turning the housing market into a consumer
The Living Wage Whiners are gonna choke on this. Econ For Dummies 🤣
Zaphod42 · 51-55, M
They were already charging over $18 for a Big Mac, medium fries and drink before this. If they wanna pack up and take their overpriced crap food with them, let ’em.

Meanwhile, my GF works for a Japanese based revolving sushi bar chain that’s doing just fine with the pay increase, and didn’t have to raise prices to compensate.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Zaphod42 I just did some quick math, and your average McDonald's employee has to work an hour or more to afford to eat there. That's insane.
Pretzel · 61-69, M
I think the unintended consequences of f that is that it will throw a lot of people out of work. And those people won't be able to afford their own food truck.

And then there is the financial loss of the people that have bought and financed a franchise.

Won't be a painless thing.
thisguy20 · 41-45, M
That's nonsense: most McPuke locations are owned by franchisees who have spent millions per location. Small business owners, which is what most franchisees are, can't afford to walk away from millions.

The ppl will be healthier…
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout There's nothing wrong with fast food if it's eaten sparingly.
Whatever. Americans want austerity, long hours short pay and early Death. You ain't no commies,! Thanks for driving home this point for us. You want more degradation. You want to be used heavily.
Cali is poor. Nj pays more than that with no problems.
MuckDonalds would be no big loss...

Their food is disgusting anyways
Good.

And good riddance.

@OogieBoogie

Ah, my envious friend (one of the 7 deadly sins) - what do you wish for the entrepreneurs and employees of the thousands of establishments?
@Slade i wish for them to make quality food that actually contains nutrients...supports growth and health.

Why do you claim my comment stems from envy?

It actually stems from disappointment. Disappointment that so much money is made from manufactured palletable poison disguised as 'food'.
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
I am glad to see businesses shutting down and telling the Woke culture we are not going to pander to you. Let the people suffer and see how they vote.
tenente · 100+, M
if this is the worst impact, then on balance: raising the minimum wage doesn't seem to have that big of an impact. i mean, there will be mcdonalds customers who are going to hate it, but how does it improve or reduce their quality of life? as for the former mcdonalds employees who have lost their jobs, i hope they find more work very soon b/c cost of living in california is increasing
SandWitch · 26-30, F
Just for the record, the minimum wage in the State of California is $16 per hour as of January 01, 2024.

$20 an hour is something you baited your post with.
@SandWitch Two cities are close enough.
SandWitch · 26-30, F
@NativePortlander1970
Individual hand-pick random cities don't count when it comes to establishing a State's minimum wage rate. It's the State Government itself that sets the minimum wage rate for the State, not the cities, which means for the State of California, the California State Government's minimum wage rate is $16.00 per hour as of January 2024.
@SandWitch Yet apparently California and Washington are allowing them to
