Do you ever put together soups or stews…

that consist of groceries you want to eat before they go bad ? It sounds awful but I’ve created some great meals that way…

Food waste is, in my opinion, a "legal crime". [b]More than 40 billion pounds of food[/b] are disposed of by supermarkets and grocery stores each year; the remainder is sold to customers who will throw away another 30% of what they purchased.
It's important not to buy more than what you can be sure you/your family will eat. Leftovers can be used to make, for example, pizza.

@helenS My mother spent the early years of her life in an impoverished town in Italy. The idea of throwing away food was abhorrent to her, even after becoming financially secure in America. And she passed that attitude on to me.
@DrWatson My parents were children during the Depression, so they had similar attitudes. Unfortunately, [b]with[/b] that was a tendency to horde food, which makes sense when there’s a household full of people (my mother was one of ten kids). I’ve gotten out of the habit of needing to see my cabinets and fridge always full, unless I’m [b]planning[/b] a gathering, because it’s just me. 🙂

@bijouxbroussard My parents also grew up during the depression. I guess that was a double-whammy for my Mom!

My parents did not horde food, but they did horde other things, like toilet paper -- and this was long before Covid!
Yep I do that. I don’t like throwing foods so I try to use it before it goes stale or bad.

Soups and stews are not my forte, but I have made some creative combinations in order to use up groceries. For example, all sorts of things can go in an omelette.
@DrWatson Very true. I accidentally made a quiche florentine once whilst using up eggs and spinach ! 😃

We put leftover veggies in the freezer for when we make soup.
@OldGrandDad Yes ! I started doing that with okra, because I add it to gumbo that I prepare during the holidays.

I love stew🤤 I think it was Huck Finn who said ,theres, nothing better than a good stew,with all the flavors swapped around....I'll reheat old stew but theres always that one ingredient in the back of the fridge that will make you pay

I get so paranoid about food poisoning since I used to eat stuff that went bad. Interesting idea though.
@Pfuzylogic I am careful about that, but sometimes there’s something canned or that’s good until say March, like some lentil soup mix, and there’s sausage in the freezer that’s still good, I’ll mix the soup with brown rice, chop up the sausage, maybe add a veggie, and invite my brother to supper if he’s working in the area.

That's pretty much what I always use for soups! Leftovers are great for soups because they've already developed flavor. Having a carton of chicken stock on hand is good. For instance, leftover ratatouille a can of beans, a little pasta and some chicken stock and you got a delicious Pasta Fajolie fast and easy!
@DailyFlash I’ve done that, too. And I often cook rice or dry pasta with chicken broth rather than water. Adds flavor. 😊

Yes I do. It is a good way to use up things in the fridge and cupboards. I made a ham stew the other day and I threw in a half of a box of Shake and bake that had been sitting in the cupboard for months – it helped make the stew tasty and cleared up a little cupboard space. Cheers!

Sort of, but I make sure I never have large amounts of food, especially perishable food, in the house. Apart from the occasional expedition to Lidl or Aldi most of my shopping is little and often.
@ArishMell Since the pandemic and my retirement I’ve had to limit my shopping to once a month and getting the right amounts has been a learning curve for me.

@bijouxbroussard Yes, it is quite a skill, valuable to cultivate. I don't think I am there, but I don't shop only once a month, and more importantly I waste very little food.

It's not easy though when living alone because most things are sold in quantities assuming at least two sharing.

I found long ago a standard tin does contain two portions and I simply keep the remaining half in the fridge for a meal a day or two later.

I throw nothing out but making (you create, I'd clump together if I ever did!) soups 'n' stews sounds like work... :(

@RenFur Perhaps "cheat" is the wrong term. More like a cooking "hack" or shortcut, where it’s still good.

@DavidScott it'll feel like cheating, because there's no way it should taste as good as it does.
@DavidScott There are lots of great cooking hacks like that one. The point is a delicious meal.

Yep, it's common practice to do this, particularly with vegetables that are past their prime.

@meggie also the bread crusts. I once made garlic bread with crusts and my bf loved it, so I use them up too (we used to toast them)

Yes and can lead to surprises; sometimes good, sometimes eh, but never terrible...
