Tattoos can get you banned now

There is a woman in the UK who is banned from the local pub, her children's nativity play and says no one will employ her. She is covered in tattoos, a lot she has done herself or got her kids to do. Do you think some people have gone too far with tattoos?
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M Best Comment
I have a few tats, when I got them, I considered the risk they might have to employment one day. I decided I would not get any that weren't able to be covered with business casual clothing. It was a good call for me, I have never had a promotion or position I applied for to be questionable because of a tattoo I have. I have sat in on interviews where the conversation after the applicant revolved around tats and or piercings, people have not been hired because of their appearance. I support everyone's right to do as they wish with their own body but employers have a right to choose who represents their company interests.

We are all judged on our appearance and habits, smoker/non smoker, tats, no tats, weight, language, it all gets looked at and evaluated.

She's entitled to do whatever she wants to herself, but I am also entitled to think she looks a twat and refuse to employ her.
ive got plenty of tattoos but, none that i cant cover up when i have to go into a professional setting. this would go under the category of bad life choices
@bijouxbroussard if folks are gettin face tattoos, its probably best that they are self employed, or work as a tattoo artist or some other art field, or didnt have a choice cause the gang required it. oops....... i forgot about the carnival workers and the circus. LOL
@SheCallsMeCrushDaddy Yeah, unless you work as an exhibit, or it’s part of your culture, I don’t understand face tattoos.

@bijouxbroussard I just have one tattoo on my ankle, it's a butterfly. 🦋

I do think that some people have gone too far with tattoos....but I wouldn't ban them from any activity based on that.
If they have not violated the law or willfully interfered with an activity, I don't think that it's right to penalize them for their appearance.
I don't think that I'd hire her for a job dealing with the general public, but I wouldn't ban her from going to a pub or attending a children's activity simply because of her appearance...I don't feel that doing so sends the right message to others about tolerance.

This is what is so fun about the world today.
People think they can have things both ways, and still feel like they have taken a stand.
As with all things that do not harm others, I think people should be able to do what they like with their own skin.

That said, such a public and prolific display can be depended on to be off-putting and to create obstacles to employment and social encounters.

As a caseworker, I had a client whose face and neck (and probably the rest of him) were covered with what looked to me like Maori tattoos.

During our meetings he was soft-spoken, courteous and kind.

He could not find work. He scared people.
@Mamapolo2016 That’s a pity.

I know employers in the UK who won’t take anyone on with ‘ visible tattoos ‘ .
They don’t give it as reason , but you won’t get hired .
@devonman I don’t think it’s still as widespread, but some schools wouldn’t hire teachers with visible tattoos.
devonman · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussardit is sectors like real estate , law , financial services.

Not sure about banning from a public business. But maybe there's laws in the UK I'm not aware of. But to your point I think when you make your bed you have to lie in it. If her need for attention was so strong, and she didn't care if it was positive or negative, then you get what you get. People can make their own choices but they can't expect, or demand, that others are on board with those choices. She will always be defined in a certain way. She'll only have certain types of people in her life. Her call. One that I imagine she'll regret if she gets older.
I suppose the reasons for the bans are the important part and while the slant to the question makes it sound like the only motivation was her tattoos, being covered so completely does make a person stand out and her previous bad actions might well have been more noted. certainly harder for her to say 'oh, that wasn't me, it was someone who looks kinda like me'.
so I'd like to know more about the pub and nativity play bans and what the people who instituted them say the reasoning was/is.

as far as employers, I don't think you have to interview her too intensively to come to a 'poor with judgment and worse self-control' assessment. I can't imagine she'd make it through an interview for a position I was screening, but I suppose I could be amazed.

I'd say that almost anything can be overdone or go too far. I'd say she's overdone it a bit.

... she asks her kids to do tattoos on her?
t actual f.

@stound google her "Melissa Sloan". Yes her kids ink her too. She says she cant even go down the street without suffering abuse.

There’s tattoos and then there’s being a walking colouring-in book.

Tattoos dont define how well someone can do the job
@SW-User They don’t. But in jobs dealing with the public a full face tattoo could be a liability, off-putting to potential clients.

Banning people from your place of business if is a personal choice…

Same way you don’t just leave your doors unlocked for just anyone to get into your car or home..

It was her choice to do such things.. she has to bear the consequences of her actions.. the same way everyone does in life.. if we make stupid decisions we suffer for it..

They can ban her if they wish at a particular pub.. and maybe another pub will get her business..

Or maybe no one will want her and she’ll have to wake up to how stupid she’s been..

Tattoos literally look good everywhere other than the face.. and you have an entire body to tattoo before you even have to start worrying about starting on your face..

It’s just backwards with the level of intelligence certain people show when they get themselves into such predicaments.. I don’t feel sorry for her at all.. if a person has a bad personality and nobody wants to be around them, a person can’t force others to hangout, just because they’re suddenly upset that they’re lonely..

Her personality obviously has key factors that show through something as drastic as that.. If she’s tough enough to get her face tattooed then she should be tough enough to handle the consequences that come with it..
Jeez she f*cked herself up 😅

I promised my grandma I'd get no face tatts so neck down is fair game to me 🤷
@ChiefWalksWith40oz Personally, I’m glad you made that promise. That is way too handsome a face to mar with ink.
@bijouxbroussard aw thank you 🥺 that's kinda what my grandma said too

In Japan on some of their cruise ships they ban men with a lot of tattoos from the baths because they associate them with Asian gangs.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
In Japan some places like ferry boats ban tattooed men from using them. They associate them with gang members.
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
I'd say to each their own, but in this case she looks like a parody
Gangstress · 41-45, F
Im all for tattoos but its just far too much for me.
Shipwrecked · 46-50, M
If society is going to continue to judge and discriminate against people for their appearance... then I suppose, one can go "too far" with tattoos.🤔🤷‍♂️

😉😎
@Shipwrecked Unfortunately, there is a difference between how a person naturally happens to look, vs. alterations they’ve chosen to make to themselves.
Shipwrecked · 46-50, M
@bijouxbroussard That is true...
Bertie · 46-50, F
That happened to a guy I knew years ago as well. He couldn't get a job. Lucky for him he could grow a beard and hide most of it so he wouldn't starve! 🤭 Yes, I do think some people are going too far with it. 🙄
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
Hmm yeah that'd scare kids. I love tattoos and have em myself but I wouldn't cover my face with em. I'll go neck but not face, maybe even sides of my head.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Ryannnnnn Do you have children? I do and I'm quite confident that they would never have been scared by those tattoos.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
Yes. But, I guess you shouldn't really be prejudiced against that. If that person had a dermatological illness and not a tattoo, they would not be refused entry.
SW-User
I don’t mind body ink at all but draw the line at the entire neck and face
I just don’t get that
CM440 · 56-60, C
Although this is not for everyone, I long for a day when judgment is based on behavior not appearance.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
They want attention and they are getting it but it’s not always the type of attention that they want. At a young age I associated tattoos with drunks that my father was friends with. When I got older associated them with long-term ex cons & their prison tattoos. When I was working as a greeter I’d see guys with some horrible tattoos come into the store looking like they were high.
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
People can do what they like but some go too far and the consequences are what they are.
wonkywinky · 51-55, M
hideous what is wrong with people?how much does that cost?
meggie · F
@wonkywinky quite little as she has her own inking gun and her and the kids do them
melbeacher · 56-60, M
That is a bit too far for me thank you !
Sirena · F
Their body their choice… but ouch.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
I've got ink too. But that is too much.
This is toooooo far.
I don’t understand banning her from the pub. Her money is as good as anyone else’s. And considering what the Nativity is celebrating, banning her from that seems pretty “Un-Christian”. People attacking her in the street need to go to jail. However she looks, as long as she’s just minding her own business, she deserves to be left alone.
ineedadrink · 51-55, M
Actions have consequences. What you do is up to you but don't complain about consequences of doing somethin like this.
Banksy83 · 36-40, M
That is ridiculous. I dont judge people as a rule but I'd think to myself those two are a couple of nutters
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
People don't just do these sorts of things cause they want to. She's most likely very mentally unstable
4meAndyou · F
Now that's a freak. Her tats are telling people that she is mentally unstable.
nedkelly · 61-69, M
And who would employ her, or is she on a government benefits for a mental illness
carpediem · 61-69, M
I’d never hire someone who defaced themselves like that. They’re crazy.
Hannahyueyue · 36-40, F
very cool🤩
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
I think society goes too far in forcing people to conform to norms. I don't think people should be banned or discriminated for these kinds of things.

I don't really like it myself. I do think people go too far. But I think they should be free to go that far if it makes them happy and nobody is harmed. It's not like she's got a bunch of hate symbolism on her face.
SW-User
The way a person is born is one thing to not judge, but it's hard not to judge at all when someone makes the choice to be certain ways.
I don't really appreciate tattoos, but some are tasteful compared to a full face and then adding the hair with all colors, etc... She definitely stands out.
I have a pretty basic rule I intend to follow if and when I start getting tattoos, which is much more likely in light of recent posts of mine. If I can't cover it up with an article of clothing in order to attend certain functions, it's not happening.

Far be it from me to force my standards on anybody else, but I just think facial tattoos are a bad idea in general.
