I always pictured myself having kids, though I did not necessarily know when I would want them. In my early 20s I met the love of my life. I figured we would have kids some day, though we were together for 8 years before we did. When we were in our late 20s it just felt like the right time (this is also when we got married). We now have two kids, a girl who just started 1st grade and a boy who's still a toddler. :)

Had 2 that’s all I wanted so got a tubal ligation.. then remarried and regretted tubal ligation for a little while.. almost got reversal. So glad I didn’t 😁 no more babies for me and I’m ready to do other things.
DarthInvader · 36-40, M
I once wanted a big family, more than ten kids. But I avoided having children because, growing up, I showed the same short temper as my father. I resented him in my youth, and I didn’t want to raise kids who might grow up resenting me the same way.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@DarthInvader aww bless you I used to say I wanted 6 kids. I probably would have if I started at 19. But I think I'll be happy with what I get really.
I understand, I think if you really wanted to have children with something your temper is something you can work on.
You're already part of the way there by identifying you have similarities to your dad, but also that resentment.
This isn't me pushing you, just saying your past shouldn't have to dictate your future.

We planned to have two, and we have a son and daughter. The first was born two years after we married. We had trouble getting pregnant the second time, so the girl was born six years later.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@exexec that's really lovely. It's nice you were able to have another. Someone was on your side. ❤
exexec · 70-79, C
@Mellowgirl Yes, everything worked out great for us.
LordBarbossa · 36-40, T
I used to want 5 of them, them I grew a brain.
Also being the main carer for my 2 youngest who were born when I was 13 and 15 helped.

I remember being very young and looking at my father and thinking if that's what it's like to be a father I never want to be one. And looking at my parents and thinking if that's what it's like to be married I don't want to. And I haven't.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
We planned for 2, the third was a diaphragm failure. We love her dearly.
Adrift · 61-69, F
I grew up in a large family and had alot of nieces and nephews. I always liked kids and knew I wanted my own someday.
marybmom · 26-30, F
I didn't plan to have kids but I passed a pregnancy test and figure I was ready for it. I had baby didn't plan on any more and passed a second test. Since I'm planning any more I'll never take another test. That'll fix it. Why can't I find the spoiled billionaire test I plan on being?

Yes I wanted 2 kids a girl and a boy. About 5 years apart. Only flaw to this was their mother walked out on us a few years ago
DrWatson · 70-79, M
Yes we planned to have kids.
But after the first, my wife developed mental illness, so we did not have another.

@DrWatson ah I see. Yes I don't think mental health pre and postnatal has really been looked into until more recent years. I'm so sorry you both had to go through that. ❤
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@Mellowgirl Thank you.
SwampFlower · 31-35, F
I adopted 4 and had one.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@SwampFlower aww how wonderful. I'm sure those little ones know how loved they are.
It's a wonderful thing being able to offer someone a second chance and a child, even better. ❤

HowtoDestroyAngels · 46-50, M
I have two kids, ages 12 and 18.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I never planned and still not planning. So far, it has never made any sense to have a child considering that I've never even been in a serious relationship or was at point in life where I'd feel just remotely that it would be a good idea.
SJones48 · 41-45, M
I never got married so no kids. I always wondered if I would’ve been a good dad
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@SJones48 I understand, are you pretty set on children only in marriage?
SJones48 · 41-45, M
@Mellowgirl Yes. I’m a church goer so I believe that but I don’t judge anyone
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@SJones48 that's ok. You are entitled to your views and it's good that you value your religion.
No judgement. Was just curious

The first was a pleasant surprise, the next took medical intervention so definitely planned there. Hit the double on that one!
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@GerOttman aww bless you. Twins run in my family. So I have been especially nervous about falling pregnant but I was blessed with one so far.

@HumanEarth fair enough. It's not for everyone and it's better you know before you're locked in making decisions you don't want to.
