For the brief time I had my son, I never hit him. I was the first child, and my parents "parented" me the way they had been initially, with corporal punishment, but they stopped. My middle sister and I got the brunt of it; our brother and youngest sister, not so much.
During her last illness, our mother actually apologized for ever having spanked us. Once she knew better, she did better.

@bijouxbroussard How'd you lose your son and how old were both of you?
ThePatientAnarchist · 61-69
Serve raw oatmeal for breakfast, with milk from skim milk powder. I realize in retrospect that we were poor at the time and this was probably a money-saving measure, but I think it wreaked havoc on my digestion.
SarahAndSamantha · 51-55, T
Not encourage their goals. I got a lot of "can I get (whatever) lessons?" No... I think I wanna try (this)...tha'll never work, don't even try. Only thing I was ever encouraged to do was play baseball, not my idea and I hated it. But mom signed me up every year for little league
separatetheheart · 31-35, M
I'd never force my kid to clean their plates aka forcefeed. Full means full.
robbie2499 · 61-69, F
@separatetheheart I agree. It's inhumane to force a kid to eat.
bijouxbroussard · F
@separatetheheart I imagine it was, at least in my country, partly from my parents’ generation, who lived through the Great Depression and occasionally went to bed hungry. But I’m also glad parents are less likely to insist on that now. It’s probably also contributed to the obesity epidemic here.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
I wish I were as good at parenting as my parents were.
bijouxbroussard · F
@ChipmunkErnie I always suspected you would’ve been the "cool" dad in your neighborhood. 😊
FreeSpirit1 · F
My son is an adult and I never instilled religion in his life like my parents did. religion is something you should decide when you reach the age of reason, not kindergarten
dragonfly46 · F
Everything, both were narcissists.
Giving me back my unfinished plate at every meal after it was originally served. This went on for 2 days, liver and onions.

@dragonfly46 I wonder, something narcissistic parents do? For me, it was cabbage stew.
dragonfly46 · F
@StarLily I'm not sure, I'm a gen X. So, I think it was a Boomer thing. Their parents lived in the depression, so maybe it was done to them.
The narcissism was pronounced in other ways. No empathy, grandiose behavior, and constant need for admiration.

It was rare, but I was whipped with a belt. I didn't do that with our children.

@Vin53 I am so sorry :)
Deprive them of the love and positive attention they need to develop healthy self esteem, self confidence, self worth.

Expose them to religion before they are able to think through and question it.
