I'm mixed race and I find to be a compliment. I don't know, I've just always liked people appreciating other peoples culture, food, hairstyles and whatever.
Yes. I'm part black and have that hair type. If the palest, whitest, most ginger person wanted to wear deadlocks or do whatever else to their hair, I couldn't care less.
@deadgerbil I’m mixed also, but I messed my curl pattern up… because I flat ironed it so much, so now it’s wavy, thick and a mess if I don’t do something. 😩
I think people should do what they want. Let the cultures blend. I have an African print dress that I wear because it's beautiful. I celebrate all cultures, races and support our differences.
@Gorps I served 5 and 1/2 years in the Air Force and we did not(!) get issued that uniform in Basic. I did not see that in Military Clothing Sales either.
@Gorps Not in the "duffle bag." Not even at clothing sales. No stripes on that dude's arms. So must be an officer. My highest rank contained was Senior Airman (E-4). The top of the shit pile. XD
Probably not it's weird for the people who make rules about how afro textured hair is "unprofessional" then get to wear it as fashion. Also there's this endless thing where yesterday's black culture is today's white trend and it isn't usually black people getting rich from that shit.
However it's also not a majorly big deal there's more serious racial problems than problematic haircuts.
I’ve never understood the whole “cultural appropriation” stigma. Cultures mix and styles are exchanged…it’s been that way for thousands of years. Italian pasta dishes are made with pasta recipes taken from the Chinese and tomatoes and peppers taken from the native Americans. Should they gives up making pasta because it’s a multicultural appropriation?
As far as hair styles, I just don’t think cornrows look good on a white person, but that’s just personal opinion 🤷♂️
@Haniazed i meaaan your hair wasnt what i would protest about the appropriation in that pic. but you are asian, so you are kinda allowed to appropriate more than white people are lol
@foldedunfolding If cultural appropriation is a thing, then no one should get a free pass. But I think it’s gone a little too far in my opinion and too many people play victim which only empowers the victimizer.
Not a definite yes. Not a definite no. It depends on the woman's hair texture and thickness and other things that I'm absolutely no Authority on. Because I'm a dude. And I shave my head.
White people can do anything that any other race can do. Latinos can do anything that any other race can do. What is right or wrong is independent of the race of the person doing said right or wrong thing. Anyone who disagrees is a racsit, period point blank.
@durinsBane1983 In general I'm more comfortable with people who don't disguise, alter or ornament their appearance with obvious makeup, face rings, twirled & fancily trimmed beards, mustaches, flamboyant hairdos. But I also don't like 'natural' untidy/unkempt hair on the face or head. Inconsistent? - yes, I know 🙂
At the end of the day the whole notion of "cultural appropriation" is manufactured nonsense, just as the idea of "race" is only a manufactured social construct (since melanin levels have only been influenced by however much ultraviolet light our ancestors received at high versus low latitudes over thousands of years)
Anyone of any hue should be able to do whatever they like with their hair (of course, don't expect it to fly in every given employment scenario), to cook any cuisine they wish, etc.
While I myself might still be a bit skeptical if going into a Chinese restaurant staffed with 100% Caucasians ("oh my, this lacks 'authenticity!", I still think a Karen with nothing else to be pissed off about invented the idea of "cultural appropriation" so they could rage once more
Now perhaps the past practice of casting Caucasian actors to portray Asians or Africans is more troubling, but maybe that is really dependent upon the specific context of the specific history of a specific society where it happened, and perhaps in another part of the world, even a light-skinned person darkening their face with makeup would have no racial connotations
@BlueGreenGrey You shouldn't conflate color with race, and referring to someone as a "karen" leads one to suspect a cultish, low level of intelligence.
Anyone who says no is by definition in favor of racial double standards, and wants the races to be in some place, in one way, segregated. Which is fine, but just admit you're doing this.
My stance is: It's as ok for white people to do this as it is for black people to dress up as vikings, or knights, or wear celtic shit with runes on it. Both are either bad or good.
@iamonfire696 Right. I think you can honor and respect a culture by learning and taking part in it. Generally, I think wearing a kind of hair style means you think it looks good.
@caPnAhab I agree with you. I saw a white girl on TikTok wearing braids and she didn’t respect the culture at all even though she loved the braids.
People tried to tell her how to care for them, black people told her what she would need to do to so she wouldn’t damage her hair. She was a know it all and wouldn’t listen to them.
She has very long hair and guess who lost most of it because she thought she knew what she was doing. She mocked African Americans and they had a laugh at her after.
To me cultural appropriation takes place when you enjoy a cultures stuff but hate and even oppress it's people. As opposed to liking and appreciating the stuff and the people. Like I have family members that hate Black and Hispanic people but they will go and eat their cultural food. To me that smacks of taking with no giving back or appreciation. It's a superficial what can you give me kind of attitude.
