How come everyone is talking about Will Smith

Hitting Chris Rock yet no one is talking about Chris Rock making fun of someone’s illness?
pentacorn · F
meh... there are more important things. no one was irreparably damaged
PatKirby · M
@pentacorn

Bingo, exactly!

Celebrity worship is a distraction, yet many continue glorification.
A large segment of society just doesn't give a shit.
A few schools of thought:

there’s the "sticks and stones” crowd who don’t think anything verbal justifies physical violence.

There’s the "two wrongs" crowd; Rock was wrong for the joke, Smith was wrong for the slap.

Then a few just think Rock got what he deserved and wish Smith had knocked him flat.

And some think the whole thing was staged.
@bijouxbroussard there are still those that do. I saw it both on Twitter and on here
@InOtterWords I don’t understand what there is to be said.
@bijouxbroussard I personally don't think Will should have assaulted Chris, but that's not because I think Chris's comment was okay. If Will hadn't assaulted him, the headlines would be all about Chris's joke, instead of Will's temper.

The following are fair game for comedians:
Short men
Fat women
Blind people
Deaf people
Death
Birth
Sex
Sex
Sex
Drug abuse
Alcoholism
Diabetes
Cancer
And about a thousand other topics
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@redredred ok but not to single out and make fun of a woman in the crowd
redredred · M
@Jenny1234 Google Don Rickles, comedians have been doing it for decades. If you’re a public figure you better have thick skin.
MethDozer · M
@Jenny1234 emcees ribbing and busting the chops of the community being honored has always been a part of ceremonies.
Peaches · F
Maybe he didn't know?!🤷Either way, comedians have been doing this sort of thing for a long time without getting slapped on national TV.📺💥😵
SW-User
@Peaches absolutely true!!
Human1000 · M
1. They are
2. Comedians are allowed to make jokes and are invited to do so. Chris Rock was invited and material screened.
3. It was barely a joke.
4. battery is illegal.
5. Will Smith lets men fuck his wife, but goes crazy when he sees her pissed off at a half-joke.
6. If Jada has what she says she has it's a very mild case.
7. Jada looks great bald, anyway, and we all know it.

@LordShadowfire I appreciate that perspective, and can understand the frustration.
MethDozer · M
@LordShadowfire It's generally known that the "stars" and high profile celebrities are going ro be ribbed ams roasted by the emcee at an award show..
Tminus6453 · M
Because it was all staged
If I was losing or had lost my hair due to alopoecia or cancer, and someone referred to me as GI Joe, I wouldn’t be offended. It would be the least of my concerns tbh
@Ghostinthemachine I have noted that females of the human species tend to be extraordinarily concerned about their hair, and human society in general frowns upon women who do not have hair.
PatKirby · M
@Ghostinthemachine

I tend to agree with this view. If I were to lose hair due to alopecia or cancer, I would very likely laugh it off as it would take my mind off my troubles and smile. At least for a moment. The problem is that we kinda expect other people to react the same, but often don't.
@CorvusBlackthorne I find females of the eagle species less concerned about baldness 🦅

I see comments about both but honestly physical assault is the more serious crime, had Will not assaulted Chris and just made verbal remarks then everyone would be talking about the inappropriate joke.
RadiantRose · 31-35, F
His joke wasn't in good taste, it's not funny at all to make joke at the expense of someone.
Very immature and it's not the first time he is doing this!
THIS IS FROM 2016 [youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ql54DPd44TQ]
I find it particularly disgusting that someone downvoted you for asking this important question.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@CorvusBlackthorne I get downvoted all the time. Nothing new
SilkandLace2 · 46-50, M
@Jenny1234 NICE👏
I did. Others have too.

It’s nuanced, but he’s also a comedian paid to uncomfortable stuff.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
He’s a comedian.
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
@MrBrownstone imagine someone telling a Trump joke and Trump doing that😂
He said he wasn't aware of her illness.. i guess he thought it was a fashion choice..
Peaches · F
@Jenny1234 Well I live in the same country and didn't know. 🤷

@Peaches they run in the same circles. He knew
I don't think it's a big deal. So what he slapped him. It's not any different than verbally attacking someone.
Quetzalcoatlus · 46-50, M
Now people will be assaulting comedians for saying offensive things. Bad move..
@Quetzalcoatlus You must know that’s not new. That would be going back to the old days when comedians were thrown in jail for offensive content. Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, Dick Gregory.
SoftArrow · 46-50, M
Who cares they are both on Social Media, I believe they made many millions from this move.
Niloo · 46-50, F
That’s what I’ve been wondering about 🤷🏻‍♀️
@Niloo It is my considered opinion that had Mr. Smith not committed a physical act of assault, everyone would be chiding Mr. Rock for his poorly conceived joke. However, as it stands, Mr. Smith is in the spotlight for his act of aggression.
SW-User
Had he not slapped Chris rock they would have
In my opinion it was bad behavior squared.

At least Will Smith was up front about it instead of hiding in the shadows with a baseball bat.

People keep saying he was laughing in the audience - that looked more like a snarl to me.
Quetzalcoatlus · 46-50, M
It’s a comedy show where the audience traditionally gets roasted. I’ve been made fun of at a comedy show and so has my wife, it’s part of the act. It was hilarious and no one assaulted the entertainer..
Bklynbadboy12 · 31-35, M
@Thatsright I bet nobody even thinks about assulting Mike
Faroutcat · 46-50, M
@Bklynbadboy12 I had suggested that Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson should be the next host. But Mike Tyson would be a good choice too.
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
GerOttman · 61-69, M
Probably because Will hit the dude instead of just making him look cruel and insensitive. He just played it wrong.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Not very many people knew of the illness
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@MarineBob I call bs on that. Even I knew and I don’t in even live the states or follow celebrities
lisalynn · 46-50, F
@Jenny1234 I didn't know. Those I know didn't know.
Adrift · 61-69, F
Cause tv has been sucking lately and we have all run out of shows to binge out on Netflix.
Faroutcat · 46-50, M
Ricky Gervais would’ve made the same joke or maybe even a worse one.
Bklynbadboy12 · 31-35, M
Well said I've been saying this all along
reubles · 41-45, M
"illness" she lost some hair, she isn't dying
lisalynn · 46-50, F
I've seen plenty of that too.
Sticks and stones.
SW-User
Coz priorities
SW-User
Well put!
lumberjackslam · 41-45, M
I don't want to talk about the incident
SW-User
Why does nobody care the Chris Rock was assaulted while working, on live TV, why is it all about Will, has anyone asked Chris if he's OK, is his face sore??
MethDozer · M
The joke wasn't that bad of a rib. Roasting the crowd is a traditional part of emceeing. That said I don't think an open palm slap is that hig of a deal either vu5 come one Will amd Jada, get a little humility. It's alopecia ffs, not chemo. The whole thing is a big to do about nothing all around.
I like your neutral take. That's how I feel too. @MethDozer
