Why is it racist to ask people to have id to vote?

Not trying to cause a fuss or anything but I feel like I must be missing something as a lot of the reasons people are saying could be describing anyone's circumstances...
strangely, you have to have ID to do just about anything in this life. i guess thats racist too. LOL
SW-User
Because it results in fewer people from certain races voting. If a practice is known to reduce turnout from certain demographics, then something needs to change to reduce that effect. I'm not opposed to the idea of needing to show ID for voting in person, but then IDs need to be provided to everyone for free. There should not be a cost of entry to voting. Voting is a right, not a privilege.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@SW-User Agree ID should not cost. Disagree it's even an issue. No one should vote without proper ID.
@SW-User Honesty just asking - why do people from certain races get dissuaded from voting?
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@carpediem Where I live (Norway) you can either present some id such as a driving license or just ask someone in good standing to vouch for you. It is made easier because everyone who is eligible (according to the national population register) is sent voting paperwork that you take with you and serves as corroborating evidence. There is no need to register to vote because the state already knows who you are.
It’s not racist. You ask someone for ID in other circumstances, far less important such as purchasing alcohol or tobacco products does that make it racist?
curiosi · 61-69, F
ID makes it harder to cheat, they don't have an argument that makes sense so they resort to insults. It's what the libs do.
HannahSky · F
Some states make it difficult for people to get an ID. They have to go through hoops and often costs more money than they have to pay for everything they need to do to get one.
Ask anyone who had a DL taken away and what they had to do and pay to get a new one once eligible.. It's not easy.
You have to look at each state and find what needs to be done to understand how it becomes such a hindrance to so many people, when it seems like such an easy thing to have.
acpguy · C
@HannahSky Bullshit. If a person wants to participate in our electoral process and have a voice they damn well will get an ID no matter how troublesome it is. How f'g hard is it to get a driver's license, get a home loan and how much do they cost?
TexChik · F
Only those inclined to cheat feel discriminated against, and thwarted .

Never understood how America constantly seems to find ways to make life more difficult than it need be.

Unless of course, that's the point !

Every other country manages to tag it's newborns with a birth certificate that has to be registered within one month of the birth.

After that you have a National Insurance number assigned to you from your government that follows you all through your life !

Schooling and records; every job you're accepted for; every claim you make for state assistance; your pension contributions; your criminal record......everything.

This is how you debunk the idea of 'voter fraud'
@Picklebobble2 You’re ignorant of other factors regarding illegals in the US. Yes there is an economic side to this. Too many people who do not live here espouse much but have not got all the information statistics and facts.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@soar2newhighs Are they a burden on your economy ? Do they need excess government assistance costing you the taxpayer money ?
Do they bleed government programs dry in their needs ?
Do they take advantage of education or college programs preventing solid citizens a place in college ?

NO is the answer !

You need weight to your reasoning

Totally stupidity: since we need a photo ID for so many things in our lives that are so much less important. What is really bad is that Joe Creepy Demented Biden lives in a state that requires photo ID to vote and has much stricter voting laws than Georgia. I am fortunate to live in a state that requires strict voter ID.
Bartleby · 51-55, M
As long as valid IDs can be obtained for free there’s nothing wrong with it.

Otherwise it’s a de-facto poll tax which is prohibited by the 24th Amendment.

@Bartleby And your's too.

@Bartleby 🤮
Liberals do not believe minorities possess the simple life skills, or intelligence necessary to procure identification.

Me too. Where is the controversy? Seems the only people affected would be criminals.
NoahB · 26-30, M
just creating more unnecessary red tape between the voter and their constitutional right to vote smh.
Beautifullyderanged · 36-40, F
@NoahB but don't they also have the right to fair and legal elections, that's what the id is supposed to be doing, making sure it's one vote per real, live person.
NoahB · 26-30, M
@Beautifullyderanged you have to register to vote which requires identification so thats already
handled. But also what if I don't have an ID? Not everyone does. Should the homeless not be allowed to vote? What if I need to vote by mail because I can't get time off work?
Beautifullyderanged · 36-40, F
@NoahB in Georgia they accept photocopies of idea to apply for mail in voting and for the voting itself. They also offer a method to get a free voter ID card. Not sure about other states though...
Keeper · M
The cost and effort to get a state ID is minimal...

Don't break the law and it's even easier.
zonavar68 · 51-55, M
It's always been required to show ID to be 'marked off' the electoral roll as having attended to vote here in Australia. Note that voting here in most elections is considered compulsory, but it's not.

What is compulsory is showing up to be marked off as having attended a polling place with the intention of voting. There's no legal requirement to actually cast a valid vote.
Mrsbetweenfatandfit · 26-30, F
I was under the impression everyone receives an ID but apparently that’s not true. I would say if we are going to require that we need to provide the ID too
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@Mrsbetweenfatandfit ~11% of USA citizens do not have government issued photo id.
@OldBrit that is because they are 10 year old kids who are not entitled to vote
@questionWeaver Great answer. Give Nancy her way and six more years these kids could vote as per HR-1
I think the theory often centers on the notion that there's a cost to get most IDs and or a need to have a paper trail of supporting documents that would end up being a burden for a number of people to have/get/keep.
Or we could just make voting a constitutional right from birth. Hmmm... Maybe make it a paid holiday and make it mandatory. *headsplosion* Party of small government my ass.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
That's only racist if they ask people of a certain skin colour to have ID to vote.
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
The ACLU lays out the argument.

Harriet03 · 41-45, F
Read the proposed bills?!
Beautifullyderanged · 36-40, F
@Harriet03 so you think the bill is racist then?
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
@Beautifullyderanged I don't "think" it's racist/ suppressionst!!
Beautifullyderanged · 36-40, F
@Harriet03 would you explain why? This is what I'm interested in as I don't think it is and would love to hear the reason why others think it is.
