Can someone explain Trump's slogan to me?

First of all, this is a genuine question, not just an excuse to rant at anyone who supports Trump. His supporters are entitled to their views...but would anyone please be willing to help me understand them?

First: Can someone please explain to me what people mean by "make America great again?" I mean, sure America has its problems, but it seems to me that compared to the rest of the world, America is still pretty great. So what exactly is it that makes Trump feel America isn't great?

2nd: When Trump says he's going to make America great AGAIN, to what point in history is he referring? When does he think America was great, and what about that time made it so much better than he thinks it is now?

Almost everything about the United States has regressed in some peoples opinions.
In particularly the rich getting richer while the poor stay, and get poorer.
Violence, poverty, bigotry, drugs, illegal immigration and many other venues of our nation are vastly out of control.
drugs are a plague in seemingly every major city in the U.S, users being younger and younger as the years pass. Drug addition is a war not easily fought as the drug industry can operate unseen. I can go on, but you get the point.
I live in San Bernardino. When I first we were murder capitol of the world. The amount of murders has only grown since then. We have some of the most violent cities in the world with some of the most drug problems. There are other countries with higher murder rates but that our murder rates in a world power and rich nation like ours can compete for murder and violence states with third world countries begs for change.
The facts are that in in many major cities it is easier for the youth to get illegal drugs over GOOD health care, or that it is easier to get guns and ammo than it is to get jobs and careers. Or the fact that at least in So.Cal. for every American working at an entry level position industrial job there is around a dozen or so migrants working. there. The fact that an American can lose his job for not being fluent in a different language is sad but true.
American veterans who defended our country sleep in gutters and alleyways and push shopping carts while immigrants live in homes and drive suvs
The same meds that cost hundreds of dollars here in the U.S. cost pennies else where. Doctors are quicker to push deadly meds with more deadly side effects than benefits than offer safer, healthier alternative treatments.
Then, we are, for the most part, a war mongering nation.
We have had like 222 years of war out of 239. The same companies that make the weapons of war for the U.s. also manufacturer weapons for it's enemies, making money from death and violence from both sides.
I could go on but i think you get the idea.
I just hope Trump holds up to his hype.

@CrazyTheatreGal: I respect your beliefs too, even though you are way too knowledgeable and intelligent a Christian to ever need a reputable encyclopedia as a convenient source of knowledge or information. To answer your question, NO I did not just cite Wikipedia to proove the Bible. In fact the Bible is the most widely published book in human history and makes much of Wikipedia believable. The Wikipedia account of the Red sea crossing is readily available online. I have not seen a comparable rendering of the Biblical version online, have you? Do we need to argue this point here? Is it relevant to Trump's campaign slogan to "make America great again"?
CrazyTheatreGal · 36-40, F
@will999: I was responding to your comment. How is God parting the Red Sea even remotely connected to Trump's campaign slogan?

There are MANY versions of the Bible online.
will999 · 70-79, M
@CrazyTheatreGal Okay then, which rendering of the Biblical version online shows clear relevance to Trump's campaign?
Anopenheart · 51-55, M
there is no answer to this because the premise of trumps promises are groundless and pointless other than to make people feel good. they can't explain it unless they talk about some ficticious version of america that only worked for white people back in the 1950s but no one will admit that without sounding like a racist. no one will be able to answer this question without resorting to wishful thinking. He certainly will not make it great for most of the people who voted for him. he will for the super rich after he cuts their taxes to %0 as he and paul ryan promised.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@innocentfun4u Copy and pasted right off the Trump website: The Trump Plan will retain the existing capital gains rate structure (maximum rate of 20 percent) with tax brackets shown above. Carried interest will be taxed as ordinary income.

So you're apparently wrong.
Anopenheart · 51-55, M
This does not square with what he has said on the campaign trail as well as what Paul Ryan has advocated as well and we both know that Trump says one thing one day and a completely different thing the next day so anything he says cannot be trusted
Anopenheart · 51-55, M
At best it would be a huge tax cut that wood primarily benefit the wealthy and the middle class taxes would go up. He and a lot of the other GOP have advocated eliminating capital gains taxeshttp://www.npr.org/2016/11/13/501739277/who-benefits-from-donald-trumps-tax-plan
carpediem · 61-69, M
I think he means growth over 3%, affordable health care, opportunity for those who want to work, less than 94 million people out of the work force, upward mobility... things like that. The things we lost over the past 8 years.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@ProfRS: What a nut case. LOL. As an American I can and shall say whatever the hell I want. That's the way it works here you nut. We have freedom. I don't care if you or the rest of world likes it or not. Now go away you wacko.
ProfRS · 61-69, M
I am 6 feet tall! :) I can say whatever the hell I want! I am 6 feet tall. I have freedom! :P One of us is a wacko! LOL Actually, I am done talking to you...because you really are crazy...by the way, just one more thing....I am 6 feet tall! :P
carpediem · 61-69, M
@ProfRS: Holy shit. You're a complete nut...
KingofPizza2 · 36-40, M
Basically a lot of people feel that they have been left behind in the way the US has evolved. Like those who used to rely on (for example) manufacturing jobs, as those jobs have left they have felt their opportunities dwindle. That's kind of the core demographic that has felt betrayed by politicians and is happy to see someone speaking directly to them.
ladycae · 100+, F
america is already great imho. i have seen it a lot worse than it is now.
He is a businessman, so likely all his references to "Great" has to do with his easy access to money.
will999 · 70-79, M
@carpediem: Hi again. Both sides of politics use various euphemisms for it, and it does have a limited power to benefit the economy, but we must recognise it's limitations otherwise it's like treating cancer with aspirin.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@will999: agreed
katielass · F
@will999 Do you realize that under obama the fed government printed about $85 billion a DAY? Yep, almost the entire 8 years. It slowed down slightly in 2016.

Ok... answer...
Your second point first - I'm not sure he's referring to any specific point in past history. To me that's a red herring for those attempting to diss him on this.

On the first point - what he means is that there are certain characteristics which made America great... and that have frayed a little bit... and need reinforcing:
1) the idea that Gov't should create roadblocks for people to work
2) the end of judicial mandates, that are interfering with democracy in action
3) restore US military capability and deterrence of the world's bad guys - thus limiting the damage overseas.
4) maybe one of the biggest is the total lack of respect the intelligentsia and government bureaucracies have for democracy, and the people who supposedly employ them... passing down mandates... trying to act as their "betters"
5) Taxes...too high... 'nuff said.
6) A health care system that lowers costs, increase options, and doesn't bankrupt the country...

There's probably more... but that's part of it.

@innocentfool: As I explained... read a little deeper, and you'll notice those claims are false. Our corporate tax rates are even higher than the EUs. Besides... by reducing the rates, we'll increase the economy (see Kennedy, Reagan, Bush, even Clinton when influenced by Gingrich)... the results are hard to deny. With economic growth we'll eventually reduce the impact of the deficit... and employ more people. Of course.. the left pretends that's not true.
Allthingscurious · 41-45, M
@Djce45: LMAO! Did you seriously just quote trickle down economics as a success? GTFO.
Anopenheart · 51-55, M
@SW-User Everything you just said is based on a fantasy world view that never existed for America in the first place. It is all built on false perceptions of America. We’ve always had military superiority and still do and he is referring to a specific time it’s a dog whistle for racism and racial superiority and a lie
Hoosierxdaddy62 · 61-69, M
It's a secret code for racists, bigots and xenophobes to rally around.

It's a way of saying "we only like straight white people" that won't get them in trouble with HR.

Check out the latest season of South Park - they explain it just about as perfectly as it can be explained.
will999 · 70-79, M
Hello again CrazyTheatreGal 26-30, F. Trump has won the presidency with a catchy slogan that appealed to some disillusioned voters, the ones who still bothered to vote. Most disillusioned voters in the US simply don't bother to vote at all. He has yet to win the minds of Congress. He advised Congress to support Israel's plans to continue establishing new settlements on the West Bank at the UN. The Israeli government reached out to President-elect Donald Trump for help in pressuring the Obama administration to veto a UN Security Council resolution condemning settlement activity. In the past the US has always voted in support of Israel at the UN, but most recently the US abstained from the vote following Obama's directive to respect the two state settlement. Israeli settlement building is widely considered illegal under international law.

@will999: Yeah but it's not - it's their land, and there is not reason to share with a hateful ideology that seeks their destruction... something for which they are not even remotely responsible.
... President Trump was elected because the elites in both parties have failed the American people.

@Ear4u2: There has been a few leaders throughout world history who thought they could improve the world by eliminating or subjugating certain particular racal or ethnic groups and one of those groups was Israel, as I'm sure you know. Father Isaac had two sons, the son God promised thru Sarah his wife although barren, and the son he had with Sarah's servant Hagar, out of impatience. From memory they never stopped struggling against one another although God blessed them both.

@ladycae: you didn't answer the question, what in his statement was fiction? Those are accurate statistics
ladycae · 100+, F
i don't care if he said the moon is made of green cheese you can't use fiction to solve the problems.
zerofuks2give · 41-45, M
@ladycae: ignore the facts, that's why people like you are part of the problem. All you do is criticize and make excuses. Good bye

It was a campaign slogan, a catchy phase, the people he tried to reach were the ones that thought the previous President had taken America back a step over the previous 8 years.
rfhh1959 · 61-69, M
I think it was to appeal to people who felt President Obama had diminished the country with what was seen on the right as his "apology tour"
Anopenheart · 51-55, M
in other words, it was slogan based a lie that the republicans had created
@rfhh1959
SW-User
None of the points which liberals have used... such as "what time in history" actually reflect the meaning of the slogan.

What it means is that there has been some dimming of American greatness, directly related to some poor choices we have made... either as a country or as an electorate... thus there is a drop in opportunity, in trade imbalances, in morals, military effectiveness... etc. Returning to that greatness is in our power to do so, and better policies (i.e., the one's he's enacting).... will help get us there.
will999 · 70-79, M
Hello CrazyTheatreGal 26-30, F: I'm not sure I understand what it means either. America is already great by any ordinary measure. Make America Great again is an old Republican chant from the past that was used in Ronald Reagan's 1980 presidential campaign. Perhaps it means that many Americans feel disillusioned at this time and there's no votes in 'Back To Freedom And Dignity'.
MrGoodbar · 51-55, M
trying to respond seriously.... first : I don't know I agree compared to many place this is a great country and has been for years
2nd - I'm guess post world war 2. That's the point in time when most of the world was digging out from under the rubble, literally and the US had the advantage of being intact. Kind of like the varsity high school football team taking on the freshman team.
Anopenheart · 51-55, M
you are asking the impossible. there is no rational reason to vote for trump. only fear, ignorance, racism, bigotry, lies, and self delusion are the reasons. if you try to understand their thinking you will go insane.
SW-User
@innocentfool: None of that is true. He's none of those things, and his record proves it. That's just a hateful mantra.
Anopenheart · 51-55, M
@SW-User what record does Donald Trump have? Three marriages numerous bankruptcies fried money laundering collusion with Russia lying daily failed presidency can’t get any legislation done constant humiliation belittling other people less powerful than himself thousands of lawsuits from people he didn’t pay and now criminal indictment. Is that the record you were talking about? Tell me the record He has and be specific
Khenpal1 · M
He is referring to years from 50-70's when being white meant relatively easy life. The problem is we can't turn tine back and make majority of other places bending to USA's wimps. Now economically USA is dependent on China for at least 50 years due to debt.
Allthingscurious · 41-45, M
You'll never get the answer you're looking for because there's nothing rational about the way trump supporters think. They don't know what any of that means because they're the most uninformed group of people in presidential election history.
olderguy2016 · 70-79, M
I will reply to your questions.Let me know if you are an immigrant in recent years.
will999 · 70-79, M
Hello olderguy2016. That depends on which definition of 'recent' you choose to apply. Speaking for myself, I'm descended from a mob of illegals whose arrival was unplanned and has subsequently proven to have had a devastating impact on the health, status and wellbeing of the community that accepted them, whom the immigrants soon overwhelmed with superior weapons and numbers. The best response to a tidal wave of political refugees is a co-operative worldwide plan to give them a home. In my humble opinion the best possible home we could give them is the one they were driven out of in the first instance by terrorists. This will require a coordinated international effort. To those who say we should not meddle in other peoples' business I say if it is arriving on our shoreline in leaky fishing boats it is our business, and prevention is better by far than cure.
CrazyTheatreGal · 36-40, F
@olderguy2016: I have traced my ancestry back to 1627, when my ancestors immigrated to the US from England. The most recent immigrant I was able to find in my ancestry came to America from Ireland during the Potato Famine. My ancestors have fought for America in every major war since we became a country.

So no....I'm not a recent immigrant. But I hope you'll answer my question anyway, as I would love to hear your response!
