People Just Naturally Like Those who are Similar

I got into a little discussion with someone here over what so many like to call "racism". As I pointed out to him:

You can't seriously expect everyone to like everyone else; that's not going to happen. It's a part of human nature to like those who are similar to us, and treat with suspicion those who aren't.

And I'm right. You may not personally like that fact, but it's true nevertheless, and there is nothing objectively wrong about that.

You don't have to "like" anyone. But there is a world of difference between forming an opinion and expressing that opinion publically with exhortations to commit violence and discriminatory acts against groups of people based on a broadly defined characteristic. Or to exploit your membership of a majority group in society to disadvantage those deemed not to be part of that group.

@Bel6EQUJ5 I'm actually a pretty happy guy. I just don't let racism fly when I find it.

I think it's the concept of "the outsider". That starts with the nuclear family. Everyone outside that family is an outsider, with the possible exception of distant family, who may or may not be outsiders.

If the family in question is isolated, or insular, then a degree of culture shock ensues with the introduction of "an outsider". Isolated, or insular, or even ignorant families gradually learn about the huge numbers of "outsiders", and categorize these outsiders by the very few things they might know about those groups.

Categorization normally occurs by nation, then by known cultural differences, and then by possible physical appearances.

Naturally, the more different in culture and appearance the "outsider" might be, the more ALIEN the outsider appears to this insular family.

I believe racism began when insular groups began to categorize other groups as "unacceptable" based on physical appearance or culture.
ever seen a blue bird hanging with a eagle?

they both birds...
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout The cliche, "Birds of a feather flock together", and it's true. Yet so many people seem to be so upset about this aspect of nature. It's baffling.

@Bel6EQUJ5 An eagle and a pigeon are different species. This is an absolutely terrible analogy.
@luckranger71 Okay, but it's still just an analogy.

Maybe that is why we are here on Similar Worlds to find people having some sort of similarity with us.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@ABCDEF7 Yeah, but she's using it to justify racism.

@LordShadowfire Hmm.. You maybe right.

@Bel6EQUJ5
those who are similar to us
What type of dissimilarity, you think can be justifiable to treat someone with discrimination?

and treat with suspicion those who aren't
Are suspicion and racism same? And even the suspicion required for dissimilar people? I don't think so. And if you think so, these are your personal views. Tell me why should I hate or discriminate with you if you are not having similarities with me?

What you say is true to an extent... Where the problem lies is this... Do you dislike just because of racial features?
Convivial · 26-30, F
@Bel6EQUJ5 no, my thoughts weren't directed at you personally... Just an observation on your thoughts
@Convivial Well, I won't say that it doesn't happen, but I would safely bet that it doesn't happen anywhere near as often as it used to (like during the 1800's). "Racism" is the least of our problems right now.
Convivial · 26-30, F
@Bel6EQUJ5 i agree... Things are slowly improving
The problem is in what people deem as racism now. The lines are getting blurred and now it’s racism to dislike someone or their way of life.
@DisappearingTide Yes, the very definition of "racism" has changed over time, and to such an extent that no one seems to even know what it means anymore.

Obvi, the people who made the threats are most to blame. However, the reason they did this is because they were lied to by Trump and Vance, people who are (sadly) trusted figures because they're the nominated candidates of the Republican Party. This would be like saying the Nazis weren't to blame for the pogroms that happened as a result of their propaganda.

@Bel6EQUJ5
Why don't they try to fix Haiti then?
I didn't see this comment. How did I miss this? Doesn't matter. This is typical of people like you. Blame the poorest citizens in the country for what's happening. Blame the people who are only trying to escape the crushing poverty for not single-handedly fixing it.
