I'm sad-I hit a deer tonight.

I was driving home from work and passing by a large field, and a young deer 🦌 literally jumped right into my car, almost like it was trying to commit suicide. My car swerved and I did a uturn and tried to go back to see if it was in the road, but I couldn't find it and there was a lot of traffic coming. I hope it was able to make it across the road and that it wasn't hurt too bad. This was the second time I have hit a deer in almost the exact same spot. There are no lights on that road and the deer move very fast across the road.

It happens...

I ran over a badger once, felt terrible for a few days.

@Matt85 road kill
Mardrae · F
@Matt85 I'm so sorry- yeah, I ran over a huge possum on the same road a few weeks ago.
My friend hit 2 after night shift on dark backroads several weeks apart. The 1st walked off.

The 2nd incident, she had to wait for a ranger to put it down. She was sick to her stomach.
It totalled her car.

Like you, same area of road.

@SethGreene531 wow-2 in one night? That's horrible! I guess I am lucky that it didn't do more damage to my car- it knocked one part of my car out of whack, but I don't know the name of the part.
@Mardrae Yes, yours was fixable thankfully.

Her accidents were actually a month or so apart.

this time of year is very dangerous for them and vehicles
Mardrae · F
@atlantic59 yes, it's hunting season here I heard

Aww, happy you are okay... They are not small, even if a doe.... making it sadder. I remember hitting a raccoon once, seeing it flailing on the side of the road, feeling the only humane compassionate choice was to run it over again. Made me tremendously sad, though in my heart I felt it the right choice to save it from suffering.
Mardrae · F
@SW-User I agree- you did the right thing. I wish I had known what happened to the deer- I drove back quite a ways, but it was pitch dark and no lights at all in the road. Couldn't find the deer anywhere.

sorry for both of you. When I was staying in Virginia there were dead deer on the road almost daily and some years earlier my ex-fiance had an oncoming car hit a deer and swerved into her head-on and she was seriously injured and months in the hospital. Where I come from they had a tunnel so the animals could cross under the highway

I'm sure you couldn't help it.

Yeah when they jump out it’s seems almost like they drop from the sky …. It’s like they appear out of nowhere

I’m sorry, I would be sad as well ❤️ it’s not your fault though, and you tried to check on it.

I am glad you are ok and didn’t get hurt yourself
Mardrae · F
@WaryWitchWandering thank you 🙏
it was about this time last year I hit one and totaled my car. it's rutting season here in Pa and see lots on the road hit by cars
@Mardrae not full cost but was happy with the deal on a new one
Mardrae · F
@saragoodtimes that's great! I looked and didn't even see a scratch on my car, but will look again once I get outside.
@Mardrae it's the luck of the draw when hitting an animal. got mine with the front drivers side and it just folded

In Australia the problem is kangaroos. There are countless thousands of them crossing roads in winter, in the outback. Many vehicles have guards, (roo bars) on the front to prevent damage.

@walabby wow!!

I have hit several deer. The most interesting one happened when I hit a doe and she was laying in the road. A car was coming from the other direction, so I got out to get her off the road. I saw from her scared eyes that she was still alive. I grabbed her by the ears and dragged her off the road. The other car went by, and I crossed the road and got in my car. I asked my wife if the deer was still there. She sai no, because when you left her she got up and ran away. Happy ending.

Roos and wombats mostly
deadgerbil · 26-30, M
It happens. It's crazy how they will run away at the noise of a branch snapping, but run straight into a car's path. Very stupid animals and there's nothing you can do aside from driving slower
Mardrae · F
@deadgerbil yeah, I sure wish they would put some lights on the road too. The speed limit is 45 but these deer just fly out of nowhere.
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
@deadgerbil bogan/redneck drivers think they are too entitled to drive slower and use situational awareness...

Reminded me of this song

@Mardrae awww poor deer hope you where alright after the trauma did ithe deer wing it or kill it outright .
Mardrae · F
@smiler2012 I don't know- I turned around and went back but it was gone. That surprised me because the road it was running across was pretty wide. I guess it somehow went back the way it came when I hit it.

@SandWitch no, I didn't know that. Interesting. Are they attacked by the animal?
