Can I ignore my jury duty letter? Or is that too risky? I really don’t feel comfortable attending.

BlueVeins · 22-25
You could always come in and talk about your anti-state, pro-crime political views lol and let the lawyers weed you out. Might be rough on your anxiety, but it's the best I can think of.
Tell them you know the guy and you think he needs to be hung. They'll dismiss you.

Used to be you got the jury duty letter by registered mail. You had to sign for it so they knew you received it. Now it comes in the regular mail along with all the junk mail. I get jury duty mail for people who haven't lived here in 15 years. In my entire life I've been called up for jury duty 3 times. Ignored it every time. Never heard another word.

You run the risk of getting in trouble for ignoring it. You can get fined, etc

On your summons should be instructions to submit a request to be excused or postponed. You can also explain that you simply don't feel comfortable.

I've been "summoned for jury duty twice" and each time I've never had to show up. They usually have a thing online that you can check after following the instructions. On the odd chance you do still have to show up and wait around in the juror lounge, you could still get sent home.

What about it is making you feel uncomfortable?
@Scribbles In early 2020, before the covid hit I was summoned, and despite having a doctor's notice for excuse due to my terminal cariopulmonary disease, the judge threw it away and told me to sit with the others.

@NativePortlander1970 What a dick! Sorry that happened to you.

I hope you are not in awful pain, or that things can become somewhat manageable pain-wise.

Facing a terminal anything healthwise is so rough. I've seen people pass away from a terminal diagnosis but I've never had to face it for myself.

I don't know you, but I wish the best for you for whatever time you have left, that you have opportunities to make the most of your time and have moments of happiness and joy and the doctors can help with any suffering the best they can. That you get good palliative care...etc
@Scribbles Thank you. So far I'm still able to live on my own, drive, and do my own errands and appointments, but with my disease, CTEPH, it can degress quickly.

I wouldn’t ignore it, but you can probably get out of it by explaining why you feel uncomfortable. Or if you have a therapist or something they can get you excused

I can only comment from a UK perspective but I have been called once. I was fortunate to be on a very good jury and it did feel like justice was served. I won't mention the crimes the person did but the verdict reached was fair and considered.

My experience is there is a lot of waiting either to be selected or whilst legal bits were discussed. I'd recommend having some novels to read to pass the time.

If you have real concerns medically I'd speak to your doctor as there are legitimate reasons to not serve.

Ive been summoned for jury duty about 2 months ago, I opted out of it by saying that it was against my religion and because I have Schizophrenia. They agreed and dismissed me from jury duty!
Zaphod42 · 46-50, M
Rumor has it that bench warrants for ignoring jury duty are fairly rare, but I’ve never tested it myself.
@Zaphod42 I know five people that ignored their summons and got 90 days each.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
I did it once for reasons I'd rather not discuss. There was no follow-up by the court. They can't prove you received the summons (mail gets misdelivered all the time), so I figured the risk of getting in trouble was minimal. Also, I know people who've thrown out every jury duty summons they've ever received and never suffered any consequences for it.
Once I sat on jury for deciding a punishment for a guy who had stabbed someone to death. I must have looked disturbed because I was dismissed fairly quickly. The rest of the times I was sent home before getting picked. I hate jury duty. But I always just reschedule.

Ah no you can go to jail if you do not go it’s your duty to go . You might be able to get out of it that all depends on the laws where you live . I suggest you check on the law first.
I got one a month ago and I texted in to postpone it for seven months.
Every time I’ve gone in, I wasn’t selected and was sent home after about an hour sitting around.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
Just go.
They'll pay a rate for the time you attend and there's every chance you won't be needed anyway
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
Oh, Aidan. You have a civic responsibility to honour jury duty. Stop running from the law.
Aidan · 26-30
@MarkPaul 😭
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
Send it to me. I have never had the chance to do jury duty. I was called for it one time but the timing was terrible given my other responsibilities at the time and I got out of it, and I've never been called again, but I feel like this is a citizen's duty that I should do some time.
Aidan · 26-30
@ServantOfTheGoddess I would but you can only respond if your name is on the letter
Notsimilarreally · 31-35, F
Pretty sure I ignored one once idek
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
Surely that's contempt of court?
eventtemple123 · 22-25, M
Pretty sure it's a felony to ignore

The last few times I received the jury duty questionnaire, I answered yes to the questions about being exposed to Covid, not feeling well, etc.

It worked great! I haven’t been called to serve since 2015.
Aidan · 26-30
@RedBaron covid wasn’t even on my questionnaire

I still have mine hanging up (I didn't have to go, thankfully)
It says, "failure to appear may result in $500 fine and/or imprisonment".
