How tf do people afford to live alone nowdays?

Even if I wanted to live by myself, there is no way I could afford it on my own. I don't know how anyone survives without a roommate or S.O. to help financially.

Our apartment manager informed us that if we stay and renew our lease, the rent will go up to $3000 per month. Um EXCUSE ME??? How tf do y'all think we're gonna magically come up with a thousand extra dollars a month????

This country really needs to put a tight leash on these predatory fucking landlords. 😤
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
There should be some kind of rent control; the maximum a landlord can increase rent in a year.
CestManan · 46-50, F
The problem with having a room mate, regardless of rent and economy, is that one ends up carrying most or all the burden while the other one freeloads.

Of course both parties have it together at first but then one of them gets fired, cannot find another job, car breaks down, they develop depression and cannot work...

SO they end up being a burden. Of course they have enough time and energy to sit around on dating sites all day and obsess over someone who lives clear in another state.

Meanwhile the other room mate is busting his or her butt trying to make ends meet.

ask me how I know all this.

Basically one is better off living alone instead of having the extra burden of a leech in their dwelling
monellla731 · 46-50, M
@CestManan i am sorry that is your situation
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@CestManan Every roomate I've had ended bad. We were friends after but I have found eventually it grows tiresome.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@JimboSaturn would you say that your roommates ended up being a burden? Like useless as a tit on a goat?

@monellla731 it's not the situation anymore but it was for a while.

The solution to this is upzoning btw. More land zoned for high density housing -> more homes getting built -> more competition -> lower rents. Land value tax does a great job of greasing the wheels by making monopoly ownership infeasible.

Rent controls work in the short term, but they discourage new development.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@BlueVeins In Canada, rising interest rates have made new home buyers wary and resisting buying a new house so demand has increased. Yes, more high density housing seems to be the solution.
BlueVeins · 22-25
Luckily mine is only 1800

This just happened to my younger brother. Where he is renting, a new person took on the property and informed them what their new rent would be, or they could politely gtfo.

They thankfully can cover (him and his roommate). But shit is tight now, and he never would have chose to rent there had that originally been the rent cost
CestManan · 46-50, F
@WaryWitchWandering landlords are abusing the hell out of this inflation thing. I mean yeah maybe they're insurance and whatever went up but not that much. I think they're trying to make up for the fact that for 2 years they were not allowed to evict people over non-payment of rent. Of course you know people fell two years behind on their rent and probably just skipped out one night.

GBPackersFan · 41-45, M
I manage although I’ve asked my cat 🐱 many times to at least get a part time job somewhere
calicuz · 56-60, M
Are you sure that's legal? That's a 50 percent increase in your rent, there should be legal limits as to how much any landlord can raise the rent. I'd check on that if I were you.
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
@calicuz it's legal unfortunately
It's getting bad. Luckily where I am we have rent control so if you're in a dwelling the landlord can only increase rent a certain amount per year usually between 1-2% But trying to get into a unit now is almost impossible. There's usually bidding wars and $3000 a month is about the going rate for a 1 bedroom apartment.
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
@MrBlueGuy $3000 for a 1 bedroom is absolutely ridiculous
CestManan · 46-50, F
@DearAmbellina2113 Even today with reckless inflation, where is it that much? I do not doubt it but curious.
@CestManan In Toronto.

https://dailyhive.com/toronto/national-rent-report-toronto-october-2022

it says the average price is closer to $2500 a month which is what they generally list for but then you get into these bidding wars and they usually always go up to closer to 3000. Then you throw in utilities and a parking spot and who knows -_- It for sure it depends on where you go if you go right on the outskirts of town or into the suburbs you can get a bit cheaper. But regardless I rented by first apartment around 12 years ago and it was $650 a month for a JUNIOR 1 bedroom in a crap part of town. basically, not much bigger than a bachelor. That was including utilities and a parking spot. That same unit now goes for $2300 a month+Utilities and parking. It's insane I don't know how people do it.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Property taxes are up. Insurance premiums up. Utility rates are up. Fire your politicians
ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
Damn seems like that's happening to a lot of people out here in Phoenix lately 🙄

Same at my house. At the beginning of the year it went up $700. From $1600 to $2300 😶
CestManan · 46-50, F
@VisionQuest I have been lucky enough to live in a house that is paid for even though I do not own it. I have not had to price apartments or anything lately but from what I have heard yeah it is ridiculous right now
ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
@CestManan yeah I'm not an expert or anything so what do I know.. but I was thinking it had more to do with inflation & increased property values kinda like Visionquest said. But the eviction shit wouldn't surprise me either if that actually had anything to do with some circumstances 🤔
CestManan · 46-50, F
@ChiefJustWalks a lot of rental properties end up with plenty of undesirables so you know a lot of people were basically squatting since they could not be legally kicked out. Now the things Vision Quest said are true but I imagine the majority of rent hikes has to do with landlords being really far behind on their own debts.
and they wonder why so many are homeless.
Spumoni · 46-50, M
3k. Holy shit! And here I thought my mortgage was high. I feel for those people in this situation
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
@Spumoni more than my mortgage payment is
Spumoni · 46-50, M
@WaryWitchWandering It's nuts.

It's a low price for freedom.. I can't live with others, other than my husband😅
But I'm on a tight budget now (Even if I blow it every week lol).
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
One of the biggest reasons I still live with my kid's dad. Not even sure how I could afford it on my own.
the rent will go up to $3000 per month

Wow....

That is crazy...

I cannot fathom how the average person could afford that; let alone save for a down payment on a house.

Cost for my house and land (mortgage is paid off): $60/mo for insurance, $120/mo for taxes. And I save about $250/mo to put towards random maintenance that always crops up.
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
@Threepio jesus, lucky you!!!
@DearAmbellina2113 The combination of a little luck, a lot of hard work, some good financial planning and taking advantage of an opportunity to refi the mortgage interest to 3%.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
with increasing difficulty
SW-User
That’s ffddd up
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
That is way too much.
There should be laws for that wtf. In Turkey, there's a law for that actually. Not everyone follows it exactly but it's there. This year there's a 20-25% raise last year I believe it was 12%
VisionQuest · 51-55, M
It is getting out of control! I've been looking to move to another city/state and the cheapest I could find was $1200 a month with no utilities included....
It sucks being single.
blackdiamonds · 36-40, F
I know what you mean. It just means i have to work extra hard and more hustling unfortunately

@SW-User we want a house but you have to have amazing credit and 20% down. Soooo nope.
