What is the point of trolling?

Are they that miserable and bored? I just don't get the purpose of putting others down in your free time.

I have wondered if it is cause there is so much societal injustice
so much unfairness and being hated for no good reason
that it feels great to actually give people a valid reason to hate you?

I don't know.. Maybe some are like that.
AllycatAD · 26-30, F
@Matt85 I do agree but, complaining about everything about it on a platform like this what good does it actually do?

it's like they are kicking a dead horse trying to make it get up and move.
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@AllycatAD Well that analogy doesn't work here. I've used this on them and they don't get it.

People feel emboldened when they know you're not near enough to actually do something confrontational. They feel safe enough to attack in others the parts of themselves they hate.

Motivations Behind Trolling

Attention Seeking: Many individuals engage in trolling to gain attention, whether positive or negative. The thrill of provoking a reaction can be enticing, as it provides a sense of power and control over others.
Insecurity and Personal Issues: Trolls often project their insecurities onto others. They may feel inadequate in their own lives and find satisfaction in lashing out at those who appear successful or happy. This behavior can serve as a coping mechanism for their own feelings of inadequacy or frustration.
Boredom and Amusement: Some people troll simply for entertainment. The anonymity of the internet allows individuals to act out without facing immediate consequences, leading them to engage in harmful behaviors for fun. This can create a cycle where the enjoyment derived from trolling encourages further negative interactions.
Group Dynamics: Trolling can be exacerbated by group behavior, where individuals feel encouraged to join in when they see others engaging in similar actions. This phenomenon is known as the "online disinhibition effect," where people feel liberated from social norms due to anonymity.
Psychological Traits: Research indicates that certain personality traits, such as high levels of sadism and psychopathy, are linked to trolling behavior. Individuals who derive pleasure from causing harm are more likely to engage in trolling, suggesting that some trolls may have a deficit in empathy.

The internet provides a unique environment where anonymity can lead to disinhibited behavior. Without the fear of social repercussions, individuals may feel emboldened to express negative sentiments that they would typically suppress in face-to-face interactions. This lack of accountability can lead to an escalation of trolling behaviors.

They need something to help them wank
I suspect it also gets footing in the 'any attention is better than being completely ignored ' bucket. If they aim for nice, they just aren't that interesting to many, possibly any. One of the worst punishments prison has is solitary confinement. It feels like things line up for that fairly well

The mean spirited non-funny bully kind of troll, they're usually sad bored lonely humans who lack basic empathy.

ABCDEF7 has the most complete list of reasons. IMO most of it is attention seeking. I don't consider online arguments over political or societal issues to be trolling. However, it is far easier online to be nastier than you would ever dream of being in person!
kendoll · M
anyone who says something that is correct or hits too close to home is dubbed a troll by the person who put their foot in their mouth. 0ften people put themselves down with nonsensical comments and the "troll" brings it to their attention 🤷
InMyPrime · 51-55, M
You got that right. They actually are that miserable bored insufferable. Bringing others down makes them feel good.
Online you can block them. Offline is harder
Yeah I agree it's crazy to troll others but people don't care. Sorry this is happening to you 😔.

Some people are bitter and twisted, and take pleasure in dragging others down to their level.

If you can't be positive, scroll on by.
If it wasn't for mental illness, I think trolling would be unheard of
