What is the point of trolling?

Are they that miserable and bored? I just don't get the purpose of putting others down in your free time.

ABCDEF7 has the most complete list of reasons. IMO most of it is attention seeking. I don't consider online arguments over political or societal issues to be trolling. However, it is far easier online to be nastier than you would ever dream of being in person!
