Anyone here have prescription sunglasses?

I stopped wearing /buying contacts a few years ago. Now I can never wear my sunglasses in the summer b/c I have my glasses on. Then it dawned on me; they make prescription sunglasses!! I would be willing to buy some b/c I do want and need them. Anyone have any here? Do they have certain styles only or a varied selection? Are they the same price as regular Rx glasses?

I stopped wearing contacts after high school. I currently have three pairs of glasses. Two with my distance prescription (one of them darkens in the sun) and one for working on computers (doesn't have my distance prescription).

The darkening ones are the best! They were expensive, but so worth it.

I actually have a fourth pair but they aren't traditional glasses. They are sport lenses that look more like swim goggles than glasses. They are permanently dark and have an elastic to go around my head.

So, to your questions... Tons of styles available. Generally more than regular Rx glasses because you have to pay for the tinting.

@sarabee1995 Wait, you go running with the glasses on? The shaking alone, plus the continuous fogging, would get on my nerves too much. 😅 Let alone when swimming..

In my case it was a matter of finding the right brand and right model. A lot of lenses I tried felt like having a piece of a plastic bag in the eyes, these American ones I'm using now are so comfortable that I even forget I have them on!

@Elessar Glasses can be strapped to the head quite easily and quite comfortably. Contacts can irritate the eyes.

Do you use eye drops of any kind?? I do not. Don't need them anymore.

@sarabee1995 They'd still fog. I sweat a lot when doing P.E. 🙈

Absolutely not! With these ones short for the 15-30 seconds I spend in the morning to put them in and the 15-30 seconds in the night to remove them, it's 100% like having nothing on (and perfect vision 😁)

Interesting post, @Coralmist My father used to have sunglasses which clipped on over his ordinary glasses. Unlike @sarabee1995 I have been wearing contact lenses (hard ones) since I was sixteen-and-a-half - the youngest age that the specialist optician would prescribe them. The greatest indignity for me - I've eventually got over it - was when I started to require reading-glasses for close work when I have my lenses in. I found some off-the-shelf dark reading-glasses but they are awkward and I've never bothered shelling out for photochromic ones.

@ArtieKat My dad just recently started to need reading glasses. He hated having to put them on and off all the time. So... He just got a pair of progressive bifocals with the top part being clear glass.
@ArtieKat I just mentioned those clip on sunglasses.
Haven’t seen any for ages

My glasses are Transitions and I love them.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@Coralmist They are a little more, but not so much as another pair of prescription sunglasses.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Degbeme Will they turn completey dark in the car too? (for driving) Where sun is shining in, but you are not in 'direct' sunlight?
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@Coralmist They`ll darken with the amount of sun. Whether you`re driving or not.

My nephew wears glasses and a few years ago for his 15th birthday I got him prescription sunglasses from eyebuydirect because he was going to start driving. I got them on sale. I think it was around $60. We put in his current prescription numbers and it had us measure the distance between his pupils by holding a card up underneath his eyes and taking a picture.
They were nice and there were a lot of styles to choose from.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@itsok 60 bucks, that is a GREAT price!! Ty so much :)
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@itsok And, that was such a cool gift to give!!

For the past few decades, I have always gotten my glasses in pairs: one normal, the other tinted. They are always the same prescription, same price.

The first time, there was a buy-one-get-one-free deal, so that is why I did it. Recently, I got new glasses from Visionworks. Paying for it was complex: if I used insurance, some of the first one was covered, but zero of the second one, yet I got 50% off. If I did not use insurance, it was buy-one-get-one free. I told them to give me whatever was cheaper (duh). The first option was cheaper. It still cost about $600. My eye exam was covered, though, with just a standard copay.

I like my new prescription: things are so sharp now. Yet the lenses are smaller making sunglass coverage less, which is annoying. Also, I had to increase my screen fonts on my computers to 125%. Everything was out of focus.

Me yesterday:

Or, you could get non-prescription clip-ons.

I have had prescription sunglasses -even with bifocals-but they are no use if your prescription changes!
Wonder if you can still get normal sunglasses that clip over your prescription ones?
Haven’t seen any for years.

@TheSirfurryanimalWales My friend has those and I think he got them recently. Maybe you'd have to ask for those specifically.

In Wales? There must be an inch of dust on them every use!

I have transition glasses. I need to get a new pair and an updated prescription since I got these senior year highschool
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I had my prescription sunglasses made last year and they are amazing. I love them.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
Ummm, you know there are transition lenses too 🤔

They go from regular glasses inside and turn into sunglasses outside. Mine do that and have a lens that’s progressive - almost like regular glasses and bifocal. They’re good for reading or long distance, inside or out.

I do use Costa’s if I’m on the water. They’re really good for the glare.
OverTheHill · 56-60, M
I have prescription sunglasses. I mostly use them for driving. They are great. The cost of lenses aren't too bad either. Though I got mine at Wal-Mart vision Center. It is worth it.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@OverTheHill I forgot Walmart has some good glasses at good p rices.. thanks!!
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Yeah I've bought them they come in a zillion styles. Check out some discount glassware sites like zenni for that.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@CountScrofula cool ty!
Turtlepower · 36-40, M
They're roughly the same price and have a great selection. Do you not like transitional lenses? A lot of people choose that option.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Turtlepower I've never had transition ones..but not sure I always want them tinted if theres any light...
SaltnLime · 70-79, M
An absolute must to protect your eyes and worth every penny (roughly the same cost as regular prescription glasses).
sladejr · 56-60, M
I still have them even though my eyes are 20/20 after cataract surgery
I got transitions and sunglasses. Somedays Im out all day and I dont want them to change
Zaphod42 · 46-50, M
I have transition lenses in n mine…in sunlight, they just become sunglasses
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
No, just regular sunglasses, which I mainly wear for aesthetics.
Musicman · 61-69, M
I wear prescription sunglasses. 🙂
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Musicman Are they transition glasses, or you also have a separate prescription for indoors?
Musicman · 61-69, M
@Coralmist I wear transitions for my regular glasses and I have a real pair of prescription sunglasses for when I am driving.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Go with the transition lens
Sevendays · M
You can get sunglasses in any frame.
Thatsright · 61-69, M
Yes. Great.
TheLordOfHell · 41-45
Nah. I don't even have normal glasses. I need new ones.
HotPizza71 · 51-55, M
My wife has them, normally the ranges of sunglasses aren't that many, but always gets a set for alongside her normal glasses
I want to get them, because that time is coming, but that would require me to go in for an eye exam, lol.
