Need to vent....

As an RN working in orthopedics, I am constantly amazed at the number of morbidly obese people coming to the office complaining of knee pain, ankle pain, lower back pain and hip pain!!!!...and they have no idea why!! OMG, I feel like telling these people to try losing 100 pounds and they may feel the improvement. When someone 5'1'' weighs 280 pounds or more, don't you think they would have an idea they may be slightly overweight and stressing their joints??????????????????? STUPID people!!!!!!!!!! Disgusting too!!!!

@LeopoldBloom Thanks for responding.

This is an example of why healthcare providers cannot be totally honest with people. They have been sued or had a complaint filed for telling someone they are obese, in so many words. Usually it is from someone who has relinquished any and all forms of self help or claims they do not have the ability to do something for themselves.

Same mentality as: "I did not cause the accident, my car did", "I didn't fail the test, my pencil did".

Same person who is obese and has a bunch of comorbidites and claims that the healthcare provider "is killing them". Same person who blames the cashier for selling them the food that made them obese.

Same mentality that believes schools should be teaching to the level of the "least advanced" kid

This is someone who needs to blame everyone but themselves for their obesity and related health problems. Same kind of person who is causing a huge surge in healthcare premiums for everyone else while making big money for big pharma.

I don't know you and nothing personal, but this mentality is a big problem in healthcare. In fact, it makes money for healthcare providers, surgeons and big pharma. They want you to believe that weight loss is out of your control and "will power". There are many appetite suppressants on the market making millions by selling it to people like this. You'll never hear about low carbs or "keto" from big pharma.

Again, nothing personal and I wish you all the best, but I liked your response and thought it needed an honest response.

@LeopoldBloom I absolutely agree with you here. I hadn't realized this post was the origin of our earlier conversation.

This post is pretty awful. Does OP honestly think that they haven't tried to lose weight!?

We are very different healthcare workers it seems. I get frustrated with clients sometimes but I don't call them stupid/disgusting. This doesn't help anyone.

Maybe orthopedics isn't the right calling for you if you despise the patients so much. There are many reasons someone can become obese. Yes, I'm sure there are those who are lazy and/or lower income (healthy food is more expensive than fast food and junk food), but as someone who has struggled with my weight since my late 30s due to medical reasons, I try to have some compassion for those who are overweight.
ChampagneOnIce · 51-55, F
@JimboSaturn I agree. I think it should be, anyway. :)
RoxClymer · 41-45, M
@ChampagneOnIce sadly it's not just about ortho, it's a sad statement about Healthcare in the US, a lot of times the GP/PCP isn't addressing it.

then there are times it's part of a weight-loss journey yes or no the Specialist can or can't help them a/o cases like the Patient has to loose weight to even Do the surgery much less make the surgery worth it, recovery is So intense, you al shortten the life of treatments or replaced parts

I get this, it's like seeing people smoke after they've removed a lung

It's nice see people walk in after starting to correct their health issues, wanting to take it seriously, instead of the revolving door of patients just looking for a magic pill.

It's worth noting that not all obesity is due to greed or laziness. In some cases nothing can be done about it - unless, perhaps, you submit to surgical removal of the 'obesity.' Failing to recognize this puts you among the ....
STUPID people!!!!!!!!!

(edit)
I have a close relative who has terminal bone cancer and is very obese for undetermined reason. Her treatment at her local hospital is deplorable, inexcusable; probably by so-called professionals with your exact attitude.
val70 · 51-55
@Really I'm so sorry that you need to read this and all the stupid comments of support for this utter hatred
Wol62 · 51-55, M
@Really We need to remove people like this from health care. I wish I knew where "he/she" worked...so I could show this post to their employers...
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Maybe because being overweight has become so normalized in North America they don't see anything unusual.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@SomeMichGuy Is it just me, I don't even understand what this dudes point is. is he drunk?
@JimboSaturn Might have been.
sree251 · 41-45, M
@JimboSaturn No, you are not drunk. Just shallow. You are a shallow fellow. You see forms, not principles.
AntisocialTroll · 56-60, F
Some people have the misfortune to become addicted to food.

As a "supposed" RN I'd have thought you'd be less ignorant of that fact.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
It’s not always laziness responsible for lack of activity and weight gain. My daughter had systemic lupus as a young teen and her joints ached every day. Do you think she was going to get a whole lot of exercise like that? And she also had Hashimoto’s thyroiditis which caused weight gain and sapped her energy way down low. The doctors seemed clueless about things too.
exexec · 61-69, C
My wife worked for an orthopedic surgeon for over 20 years. She was amazed at how many patients got mad and went to another doctor if it was suggested that a loss of weight would likely reduce their pain issues.
Really · 80-89, M
@exexec Maybe that doctor was expressing their opinion in the same insulting, dismissive terms as the OP? In which case I'd definitely be looking for another doctor.
exexec · 61-69, C
@Really That was not the case.

Need to vent....
As an RN working in orthopedics,

you don't sound very 'professional' venting on a sex themed social media site to strangers.
@val70 well, maybe don't give it and you won't get it sweetheart 🤗
val70 · 51-55
@OogieBoogie Thank you very much again for your very kind words. It's a pleasure again to know that you can't disappoint 😁
@val70 you're more than welcome .

Yeah, I work at a grocery store and I can see all of the junk foods they load into their motorized carts
CestManan · 46-50, F
@MyNameIsHurl oh but don't fat shame because people on here will get their feelings hurt.
Applepiedom · 56-60, M
People blame the spoon but it's putting it in your mouth that does you in.
Also change dietary chart ,make manufacturing not use GMO foods, quit putting carbs and sugar in every thing the list goes on
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
My sister works on a diabetic ward and people come in with their toes black or fallen off. Wouldn't you come in before that happens? This is Canada with free health care too.
val70 · 51-55
@JimboSaturn You're right. Someone needs to look into this. It isn't normal
akindheart · 61-69, F
my friend was like that. first her knees gave out then her hips. she is now almost bedridden. cant walk at all.
therighttothink50 · 56-60, M
These are the members of the lard and drone generation, content to stare at a screen all day long.

Health insurance premiums are going through the roof and a big reason is because of people who choose to disconnect from the real world and the movement of their bodies.
therighttothink50 · 56-60, M
That could be true.

But cars represent freedom, the ability to go where you want and do what you want. People who value freedom do not want to be part of a Communist hell hole where cars become unaffordable (electric cars) and 15 minute cities become a normality.

Europe by and large has embraced Communism and losing most of its freedom and privacy is the result.

helenS · 36-40, F
@therighttothink50 Thank you – my remark wasn't meant as a political comment, just a comment on some people's laziness. Actually, where I live, if you took your car to get to a place that's only a 5 minute walk away, people would ask you if there's something wrong with you today, and if you are perhaps too sick to walk?
val70 · 51-55
@therighttothink50 Well, lets have the total dismantling of social security measures and minimun health care just because everyone who's in pain is really lazy and not worth our money because they really aren't worth it because they can't grin and bear it. Marvelous! What a caring and high cultured society we have indeed
I hear you. The culture is obesity. Do not be so hard. Listen to this. I was an RN for 28 years. Specialized in general surgery pre and post op and ortho. Retired after 28 years. My knees are ruined. I wore good shoes. Elevated my legs. Wore support hose. Eventually I will need knees replaced. So mind what you say. Sometimes you do everything right and still end up in trouble. If you feel this way, it may be time to move to another area.
TexChik · F
Mental illness and obesity are two of the cash cows for Big Pharma; they don't want patients cured. They want them dependent on their drugs. So it's no surprise it's a rampant issue. It has nothing to do with obsessions with their cars. It's more about bad genetics, bad habits, bad training, and a complete lack of self-discipline.
sree251 · 41-45, M
@TexChik You can't say that the Buddha had no self-discipline.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I don't understand why you or a doctor can't talk to the patient about weight. It is a relevant thing to bring up, given what is ailing them. And losing weight is certainly a valid treatment.

Maybe you can do some calculations in advance: what is the cross sectional area of a vertebra in the lower back? How many pounds of weight are in the upper body? Divide, and get the pressure in pounds per square inch on that vertebra! Or take the cross sectional area of the two ankles and divide by the person's total weight to get the pressure on the ankles.

Maybe reporting those numbers to the patient will make a light go on.
@DrWatson Eople will not listen. Lifestyles are hard to change. The quick fix is the surgery. I could tell you stories from ortho. Unbelievable.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
It is very frustrating. People take no responsibility for their own health, then expect our health professionals to provide quick cures on demand.
CestManan · 46-50, F
Oh and for people who are saying that she has a bad attitude, imagine if you had to deal with people who ruined their health through poor choices and then acted like they have no idea why they were so screwed up.

It's hard to feel sorry for people when they brought problems upon themselves. I don't know about anybody else but most times when life has kicked me in the butt it was my own fault. And people were very quick to remind me that it was my own poor choices
SW-User
My bmi index went up during the lockdowns. We were restricted to thirty minutes exercise a day, gyms closed.

Low gi food difficult to come by. Restricted on amount of low fat milk.

In the end, the hoarders even took my bran for breakfast. Bet they threw that away.

No wonder people are so called morbidly obese.

The keys to my diet are
Small portions
Low gi diet
Regular exercise.

It is not helpful to call me stupid and disgusting !
Willomk1 · 46-50, M
Most people who are overweight no it telling them won’t help, if more time and money was spent on finding the cause of their obesity their relationship with food you would have more success rather than quick surgical fixes .
My wife’s a big girl and when a doctor would go on about weight she would go to a drive through for a binge to spite them
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
How about recommending they see a weight loss/nutrition specialist? That's the root of obesity, it's always emotional.
originnone · 61-69, M
@DearAmbellina2113 I know it's an emotional issue for an RN seeing it, but I think DA is looking at the root of the issue.
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
@doughgirl kind of a sh*t attitude for a health professional to have if you ask me. But do you. ✌🏻
Neoerectus · M
@DearAmbellina2113 Also highly processed "foods" that screw up gut bacteria. Try finding soups without sugar. Manufacturers go for the 'bliss points' associated with sugar, salt, and fats. These trigger brain chem that gives pleasure. Like cigarettes, it is all about profit. Period.
RoxClymer · 41-45, M
as a person born with a disability the one thing I have Always done is keep my weight under control, because I knew it would just make things harder if I was overweight
CestManan · 46-50, F
My ex roommates mom would tell a 5 ft 1 in 280 lb woman to move her scrawny butt aside because she needs to get to the buffet. But yeah our bodies are just not designed to carry so much excessive weight.

Now it is true that unless somebody looks like they've spent a couple months in a death camp then doctors are going to tell them that they are dangerously overweight but come on, there's kind of a difference between carrying some extra weight and having enough weight that it ruins your life.
Wow easy saying it get to the root
smiler2012 · 61-69
{@doughgirl] i too work in the health care profession i do not want to sound pious but you may have a valid point but it is a caring profession
YES...They need to get in shape....

Unfortunately, their parents once told them it was OK to be obese because ROUND IS A SHAPE

@LvChris Recognizing that some obese people have little choice in the matter is NOT
"Telling everyone that it's okay to be fat"
And it's false to think every obese person you encounter is just greedy, lazy or lacking in will power.
Renaci · 36-40
Sounds like someone that has never had a weight issue in their life. What exactly are they suppose to do about it? Lose weight? Do you have have any clue as to how impossible that is for most people? Unless you are offering some kind of revolutionary weight loss solution you have no idea what tf you are talking about.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
@Renaci Cut carbs. Cut sugar entirely. Eat 6oz of protein at at least two meals. Eat vegetables. Start an exercise routine, even if it just involves walking. Do it every day.

If you’re obese, you’ll drop 20lbs the first month. If you’re just overweight, you’ll lose at least 10. And, it’s an easy diet to continue.
