Do you also find it hard to feel sorry for missionaries when they get killed and eaten?

I mean it's pretty insulting, they go over and start telling people their beliefs are wrong and then wonder why they get their heads bashed in.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
No I don't feel bad. I think the only time I'd feel bad is if they genuinely were in their own religious institutions and were solely targeted for being missionaries but this is different.

I remember a story about a missionary killed by the Sentinelese people but I remember learning their background. They basically learned to be hostile because several people tricked them and used them as slaves. They first learned to be hostile towards outsiders when colonialists came over and forcefully took an elderly man, a woman and four children.

All of them got sick, the two adults died and the colonialist returned the two sick children to the tribe so now they just kill outsiders.

I am not sure if this is the reason why but many historians think this is likely the case. There's really no going back.

@SatanBurger just to add to this... Slavery was widely practiced by some African tribes before outsiders came along.. It almost seems to have been world wide as a cheap source of labour
It feels colonial

Also to add to my further response, it's very insulting to be honest. It's just really culturally insensitive when you have others lording over you about how their religion is better than yours when the things that make up a person are so complicated. I do believe Christians or Catholics don't remember refer to Islands untouched by Christianity as devil islands or something to that extent.

But I mean that's insulting isn't it? To be regarded as something evil and vile. Like personally I would take offense.

@SatanBurger I think that is why I hate the Christian posts here telling everyone they are wrong and mislead.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@JimboSaturn me too, it sounds so insufferable. Imagine someone telling you that you're a bad person because you don't go to church. They really do think that
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@SatanBurger They believe we are going to be punish for eternity because we don't believe the same thing as they do regardless of how good we are or how much we bring into this world.

That got what's coming to them. It pales in comparison to what the invaders ended up doing to them.

Missionaries do die. Sometimes they go places where the people recognize the threat. And the threat is extinguished. Totally understandable. And not exactly unwise.
calicuz · 51-55, M
Actually, I don't feel sorry. If we are talking about that kid that got killed on that island off the coast of India, then I believe he was asking for trouble and he found it. We need to start learning to leave each other alone, especially the people who no nothing of the modern world. I mean what do we have to offer them that they truly need, microwaves, fast food, and credit card debt?
Leave them alone and lets get back to talking to each other and solve our problems.

Yea its there own fault forcing beliefs on others i kinda hope they get canalbalized.
Oh yeah, if someone tells me my brliefs are wrong, I'll like totally bash their head in, perfectly rational response.

It's the same logic as say, primitive blasphemy laws.

@jshm2 i've always equated martyrdom with senselessness. but, i'm a non-believer so 🤷‍♂️ to each their own, i guess...
Lol right?

These people literally have it coming
wackidywack · 22-25
Wow that's something that happens ??
calicuz · 51-55, M
Who are we talking about here?
Well, especially since the Bible says that people who don't know about Jesus can still get into heaven if they just behave themselves. So then why tell them about him?
calicuz · 51-55, M
@LordShadowfire

Wait, what scripture is that one, I need to use it in my theological debates.
@calicuz I'll have to look. I found something in Romans, chapter two, but I'm going to keep digging. It's definitely part of Christian policy, at least in some denominations.

@LordShadowfire

i might be behind the curve on this one so feel free to correct me. isn't the intention of their sacrifice to inspire others to follow? the circumstances of their death could make followers consider them as martyrs(?) for believers, i don't think it's pity that they feel about them, more like worship? as a non-believer, i really think it's pathetic to waste your life this way.
