What are your thoughts on NOT taxing tips and overtime?

ArishMell · 70-79, M
Tips and overtime are two totally different things. The and should be replaced by or..

Tips should not be necessary and are voluntary; but are expressions of gratitude - indeed they also called gratuities. They may be a left-over from the days when waiting staff and the like were paid very badly even by the standards of their time. Nowadays tips are, or should be, no more than perks, although many hospitality-trade staff are on minimum-wage rates or little better.

By the time they are shared the individual income from them is probably very low, and the advent of paying by bank-card has probably made them even lower despite the soliciting on some systems used by restaurants. (Which I don't like - I do leave cash-tips tips in a pot on the counter but object to this artficial begging by machine.)

So really, the income from tips is so small, variable and difficult to quantify it is probably far more expensive to tax than would be worthwhile, as well as being rather mean.

...

Whereas overtime is extra to the contracted hours and often paid at a higher rate than the stardard-hours rate - so naturally attracts the normal taxes.

That obviously varies between countries by their different fiscal systems, but in the UK consists of Income Tax and National Insurance, usually deducted and paid by the employer on the "Pay As You Earn" system. The minima on these ensure the lowest-paid do not pay Income Tax.
I have not read the bill, but according to someone that has claimed to have read the bill, it's only no tax on cash tips, so the electronic tips would still be getting taxed.

I think it's much better idea to just say no tax on your first $40,000... but taxes start after that.

This is just asking for loopholes, and things to be manipulated, the way it's currently set up.

@LordShadowfire project 2025 wasn't that long. I read the executive summary and the chapter on health and education. They were scary then and it is absolutely his current playbook.

@samueltyler2 I have to say, you've got more patience than I have. Or less ADHD.

For everyone else, here's a website that keeps track of all the parts of it that he's already brought to fruition:

@LordShadowfire i am so upset, i don't need to see more.

Tips for tipped waitstaff is supposed to bring them up to wages for workers in jobs like retail employees. If you don’t tax those tips it actually is unfair to those untipped workers.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
Tips are usually paid from downstream income that's already taxed at multiple levels.

I'd also like to see them make shareholder dividends tax free. Corporations already pay federal and state income taxes on that money.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
It has always bothered me that their workplaces can pay them less and expects those served to enhance wages with tips.
Pfuzylogic · M
no taxes on tipping weren’t included in the bill, as soon as overtime is included, employers plan on giving time compensation instead of money!
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Pfuzylogic Bill hasn't passed the Senate yet.

I'm hoping it just doesn't get passed by the Senate.

There's still a few hold overs.

@BlueVeins

Some workers don't make tips or overtime. Why should workers who do be given preferential treatment over those who don't?

How about getting that job that makes those benefits possible? Instead of jerking off to government jackboots stomping on them?

It'll never happen. Independent journalists are reporting that between Tяump's parade and the deploying of troops to Los Angeles, the Federal Government is set to spend a quarter of a billion dollars.......... WE CAN'T AFFORD IT!!!
We'll have to fire more hard working Americans to pay for it all.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@calicuz when did that ever stop Republicans?
calicuz · 56-60, M
@samueltyler2

Unfortunately, never.
I never understood tax on tips, tips are gifts and gifts are not taxable up to something like 17 grand..

Tumbleweed · F
I'm all for it
@Tumbleweed you would be surprised how much a server can make in an average day off tips
Tumbleweed · F
@NativePortlander1970 It still belongs to THEM though. Period.
@Tumbleweed I completely agree 1,000%
YoMomma · 41-45
Why shouldn't they tax overtime? 😏 sounds fishy to me .. tips should be off the books tho imo
@YoMomma I know a waitress at a high end steak house. She makes as much or more annually than my wife as a school teacher 5 yrs experience in our area. How is it fair the waitress's tips (~ 90% of her income) aren't taxed but every penny of the teacher's salary is taxed? It makes zero sense to me.
YoMomma · 41-45
@BrandNewMan ah i agree.. public school teachers should be exempt from taxes 😏 after all their whole job is paid for by taxes why should we pay taxes with tax money? 🙄 private schools are another matter tho .. why do they even get federal funding?
@YoMomma Swap bus driver or nursing home orderly for teacher. I have the same question.
Rudboy41 · 41-45, M
It should continue, the tax man needs to keep his filthy hands off of my fortuitous gains, taxing the money i launder through my resturants and nail salons would kinda defeat the point.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Rudboy41 If you don't want to help fund the society in which you live, I can help you pack.
Rudboy41 · 41-45, M
@LordShadowfire yes please, as long as it means you get to touch me 😉
Pretzel · 70-79, M
I don't get either so - no benefit to me
meJess · F
Provided those who do not get tips are given a similar tax advantage then no problem.
NeuroticByNature · 41-45, F
It sounds like a good idea but when the government wants to do anything for anyone theres always slide of hand involved.
Good...

But it will complicate things Alot when filing returns
Thinkingdeeper · 36-40, M
Or.... pay a decent wage so tips are not then a necessity to get a sensible wage.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
Tips shouldn't be tax at all
HumanEarth · F
Great, now how about no property tax
JSul3 · 70-79
This will certainly limit their contributions to Social Security.
Londonn · 36-40, M

@Bhs123 I got rid of Twitter. Elon was using it to influence the election. You feel like telling me in your own words or showing me another source that isn't biased?

The less money in the hands of government the better.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
This sounds like a loaded question from a Trump supporter to me. But that couldn't be, right?
Thrust · 56-60, M
