Losing the first time out is not uncommon. Our first night on the race track we made all kinds of mistakes. We had a car that could win. After the race was over a veteran driver was quick to tell us everything we did wrong. Then he said "Did you have fun?". My son the driver replied, "yes". The driver who had given him criticism then replied, "That is all that counts".
You got out there and tried. There will be another day.

I would tell them that they made a good effort. Then I would ask what they thought they needed to do better. We would come up with a plan for improvement. If they have doubts, I have plenty of stories of "stars" who failed at first.

at some point, we all fail, even the best of the best have bad days. learn from the event and come back stronger next time around.

Usually I see the first competition as being an introduction to what you can expect.
Your kind of getting the idea of how it all works.

You’re not going to win in everything you do . Accept the loss and use it to better yourself .
