What advice would you try giving to somebody who might of lost at their very first competition or they came in last place?

Either if you were a coach or a parent or just trying to "help" in a way?

I would tell them that they made a good effort. Then I would ask what they thought they needed to do better. We would come up with a plan for improvement. If they have doubts, I have plenty of stories of "stars" who failed at first.
