A quote from Benjamin Franklin

"Freedom of speech is a principal pillar of a free government; when this support is taken away, the constitution of a free society is dissolved, and tyranny is erected on its ruins."

Relevant then, and even more relevant today, especially online where on certain sites, we are censored by tyrants. They say you can say this, but you can't say that, who are they to say?
AbbySvenz · F
🤨

That is exactly not what is said in that XKCD strip @ElwoodBlues
@AbbySvenz True. Although what I wrote is germane to the "or host it while you share it" clause. Property rights to come into play there.

@AbbySvenz I can't believe this has to be continually explained to some people, over and over and over and over ... I highly doubt that @Dv8rs would allow me to stand in their living room spouting whatever I like ... whether they are a renter or not, that is how private property and the private sector works

Those are some words of wisdom right there. I like Similar Worlds for this reason, not likely to be censored for having an opinion here.

Usually people who parade around as being liberal but do not have the first clue what being liberal stands for in my experience...

It is crazy because unless you agree with everything they say in their books you are a fascist far right Trump supporter. I disagree with a lot of republicans viewpoints but I find a lot of the time they don't go on the attack when I say something they don't like.

People need to take a look at what Liberalism is really about then think about whether Liberal values are really being represented.
Dv8rs · 18-21, F
@Misanthropic True, if you're too left, or too right, it's too much.
Misanthropic · 26-30, M
@Dv8rs Actually I am inclined to agree, I think that choice is an illusion and ultimately both parties are headed the same way then just sticking different labels on it.

I agree 100%
Especially the democrat party - they seem to have lost their way.
What certain people are experiencing online is NOT censorship, it's something else. It's a thing called capitalism.

Speech in the public square is governed by the First Amendment. Speech on private property is governed by property owners. Although you can probably find some socialists to agree with you that property rights are bad, you'll find that capitalism is actually built on property rights and can't really survive without them.

BTW, twitter's customers are NOT the people who post there. Twitter's customers are the advertisers. Those are the folks Elon Musk is really trying to please.

@ElwoodBlues not only do these people feel entitled to force every private sector entity give them a yammering platform, apparently they also feel entitled to force every private sector entity literally give them money too

Funny how these people are suddenly turning away from capitalism and, in the ultimate irony, to communism ... and they don't even grasp this ... it makes my head spin ...

Avoid those sites. Without users they dry up and go away. FB is having issues now. We’ll see what happens to Twitter.
Dv8rs · 18-21, F
@carpediem Hear, hear.

One of the best presidents I think next to Kennedy, morally that you guys have had in the US
Funlov · M
@akindheart I think it’s Trudeau, France and your president. That’s why we’re all so fucked up. Got a French president can’t speak English we got yours who’s got all timers then we got mine was just an idiot
Funlov · M
@akindheart but we got an election coming up soon so he’s gone so we just gotta worry about the other two idiots who won in France and the one you guys have
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Funlov true dat.
Budwick · 70-79, M
They say you can say this, but you can't say that, who are they to say?

I'm not allowed to say.

LOL
JohnnySpot · 56-60, M
They say it's not as bad as they say it is.
100% freedom of speech without any limitations, at any place, any time? The obvious use of slander and defamation of character would be legal. The reason is "Love your enemies, for they tell you your faults" Poor Richards Almanac 1756
Dv8rs · 18-21, F
@softspokenman And that's the truth.
JohnnySpot · 56-60, M
"beware of meat twice boiled and old foes reconciled"
Wol62 · 51-55, M
Absolutely. As the editor of the Pennsylvania Gazette, Franklin benefited financially from the advertisements for runaway slave and slave auction advertisements paid for by slave owners and traders. Clearly freedom of speech was profitable for him at least!
Funlov · M
@Wol62 fuck I feel stupid I should’ve known that part of history should’ve paid more attention in school mostly history

You realize that he was talking about the educated and the sensible. Society has lost its sensibilities. Free speech remains as important today as then however if the framers of the constitution were around today they might have a very different take on freedom of expression and other freedoms.
Dv8rs · 18-21, F
Thank you, for exhibiting that very freedom.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
The problem is everyone agrees as the left wants to shut down conversation that doesn't agree with their sensitivities and those who claim to be on the right, but who are in the pocket of Cry-Baby-trump want to shut down conversation that hurts Cry-Baby-trump's feelings.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
Owners of private property that you are making use of. If you invite me to a BBQ and I start talking trying to convince your other guests that we should throw anyone who eats a hamburger in jail in order to protect the sanctity of hot dogs then you have every right to ask me to leave.

I can't just declare free speech and remain on your property after you have deemed my behavior is inappropriate.

Now if I went to the public park which is owned by government, and therefore by extension to the public, I cannot be removed simply because of my hamburger rant.

The freedom of speech blocks the government from creating laws that restrict it. It does not mean you are free from consequences or subject to rules set out by private property owners while you are on their property.
4meAndyou · F
Quite right!
DDonde · 31-35, M
Franklin was talking about governments, not voluntary communities.
SW-User
I'm curious, are you a pro-capitalism person or a pro-communism person? Because your desire to force everyone in the private sector to give you a platform is communism.

FYI here is what an actual, real attack on the First Amendment (and "cancelling") looks like:

Have you been locked up yet?
Didn't think so.
