It's the boiling frog principle. Put a frog in cold water, and heat it very gradually. He will not jump out of the pot because the change is so gradual. He will stay in the pot until he is dead.
In a similar way, we have accepted small changes beginning as far back as the 1920's, which warped our values and our systems. We have ignored the internal depredations within our school systems, and we did not even jump to alarm when the Russian communists TOLD us how they planned to destroy us.
Now, suddenly, we have awakened to the TRUE cost of our long sleep.
Half of our nation WANTS to be destroyed. They have been brainwashed and bullied into believing it's ALL GOOD.
The other half want things to continue as our forefathers decreed in the US Constitution.

@Bumbles Agreed. And from a left wing perspective the best way to defeat a political system designed to marginalize certain groups is to create community networks and initiatives that make the flawed electoral system largely irrelevant.
In my old neighborhood there were far more community organizations that did way more for the community than the guy up in Ottawa ever did.

@ElwoodBlues That's imo to simple... these people were already groomed for the message partially due to a culture soaked in far-right ideas. And a network of snake-oil peddlers. Like: preachers dealing in politics, schmittian politicians, loads of far-right pundits on TV, internet and Talk-Radio, ... etc

I would argue that Capitalism is tearing the US apart.
You have amazingly elite extremely rich people who are benefitting off their version of Capitalism and control and the majority of wage earners who are not earning enough to pay for accommodation and living expenses.
You then have smaller businesses copying how the elite got rich similarly exploiting their wage earners.
I would think that is what is tearing the country apart.
