Tariffs dont work unless they are to stop dumping or protect a strategic industry. In the case of the Trump tariffs they are politically a lying distraction. and revenue wise a taxation by stealth. And in the global economy frame they just shot America in both feet. Other nations are lining up to take their business anywhere but America.. Now Twitter Instaface and Spacebook are asking Trump to put more tariffs on Australia because we are insisting they take legal responsibility for what goes through their sites and they dont like it. And they are out over $100 Million (between them) in taxes for profits they made in OZ. Why thats almost two hours profit!!😷

It would be a good idea to ensure the local infrastructure is in place before placing tariffs. If this is not done then it is simply another tax for consumers.
Oh, and it is not unusual for local companies to raise their prices to just below that of the the imports...such as white goods.

Large scale tariffs have been tried and they don't work.
Students of American history might recall the name "Smoot Hawley." No, not an MLB pitcher, a tariff act.

The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, which raised tariffs on imports, led to a significant decrease in international trade and is widely considered to have worsened the Great Depression by prompting retaliatory tariffs from other countries.

Tariffs can bolster home manufacturing... But the cost is greater.... The consumer psys for that
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Convivial Can you explain the connection between tariffs and home manufacturing?😷

"Policy" is stretching it a bit . . I'm not sure even he could concisely describe what he's actually try to do.
sarahcupcake · 36-40, F
@SunshineGirl Yes but it is exciting, Sunshine..!!
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F

He is 37 years too late in reversing the impact of NAFTA.

@AthrillatheHunt says NAFTA
President (1981-1989) Reagan negotiated and implemented the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement (CUSFTA, precursor to NAFTA) in 1988. President (1989-93) George HW Bush negotiated NAFTA during his term, signed it in Dec 1992. See https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/remarks-signing-the-north-american-free-trade-agreement
It entered into force on Jan 1 1994 under President (1993-2001) Clinton. However, it has much more of Reagan's and Bush's fingerprints on it than Clinton's. You gotta remember that Reagan & Bush 1 were both devotees of free trade.
@AthrillatheHunt
Lewinsky was 22 when the affair began, fully adult, fully able to make her own decisions. And she has said repeatedly that she consented.
Although after the "me too" movement she began to re-think issues of power, authority, and privilege.

sexually assaulted an intern (and lied about it ).
WRONG! Clinton lied about having sex; there was no assault.Lewinsky was 22 when the affair began, fully adult, fully able to make her own decisions. And she has said repeatedly that she consented.
“Sure, my boss took advantage of me,” she writes now, “but I will always remain firm on this point: it was a consensual relationship. Any ‘abuse’ came in the aftermath, when I was made a scapegoat in order to protect his powerful position.”

@GerOttman Trump lives only in the moment, not for the long term.
ElwoodBlues · M
@GerOttman Your same crowd kept telling us that if Reagan cut taxes, there would be a short term loss, but long term more revenue - the magic of the "supply side." Yet, in 40+ years, the supply side magic NEVER WORKED. Tax cuts NEVER increased tax revenue.
How deep and how long a recession do we need to convince blinkered individuals that the tariffs that failed repeatedly in history will still fail? Serious question, @GerOttman, how long should we wait before judging the effects of tRump's tariffs? A year? The midterms?? How long???
