That "hillbilly's elegy" comes directly from the war mongering old testament. Is it no wonder even Vance himself is pushing the old testament in schools with the ten commandments? 🤷🏻♂
He himself knows nothing about the New testament.
Like Mark 12:30-31 "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[a] 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] There is no commandment greater than these”
And there's so much more that Vance refuses to acknowledge!
Vance's beliefs are directly from the war mongering old testament.
If your neighbor tries to kill you and you kill him or her first, where did you get the silly notion that you don't love him/her?
Yours is not a serious argument.
It's NOT a sin to kill some one as an unintended consequence of protecting yourself from their harmful intent.
There is no agency because the act of will is as illusory as the sense of self. Therefore, sin is not the issue but the mess we suffer as a result of conflict is.
If a guard shoots and kills a fleeing prisoner attempting to escape the guard is guilt free because (1) the intent of the guard was to prevent a dangerous person from escaping, not to kill. (2) Firing a shot at the person trying to escape doesn't guarantee that the escapee will die. (3) For the guard to intentionally NOT fire a shot at the escaping prisoner, that decision may also have horrible consequences.
Humankind has discussed such moral questions for thousands of years, and I well remember numerous examples of the above being discussed in Catholic morals class. Leo talks like he was born yesterday and spent this morning hiding under a cabbage leaf. Or ... maybe his rhetoric has a different basis. Like why did Leo have a private meeting with Obama political strategist David Axelrod?
Vance is a Catholic. Perhaps, Pope Leo should hear his confession. Be interesting what his penance would be. I hope it’s not become President of the USA.
That quote is made up. There’s no credible record of Pope Leo and JD Vance having any such exchange,. Vance simply said that he believes some wars are justified from a moral standpoint. Pointing to World War II to shut down moral criticism of violence is a lazy argument anyway. Christians have debated the ethics of war for centuries, and it’s not settled by one slogan
"Vance simply said this, Vance simply said that." Are you a woman, a gay, or what?
I post, for discussion, what I see in the news on the internet. If news agencies made that up, so what? Are the points raised worth analysis?
@sree251 ...and hookers peed on a bed in moscow, and hunters laptop is ruskie disinformation, and "less than 100" American citizens were abandoned to raghead terrorists, and President Trump loves dictators, and Joe Rogan said he’s not voting for Trump, and The Constitution ‘clearly states that a felon cannot take elective office’, and Melania Trump said she wants a divorce, and the bordes are secure, and biden is as sharp as a tack, and iran wants nukes to power their country, and the planet is cooling, and the planet is warming, and the planet is undergoing climate change, and there was plenty of water in LA, and boys are really girls, and 140 officers were assaulted on January 6, and pelosi never rejected National Guard troops before Jan 6, and the Biden Administration did not spend millions on “making mice transgender.”, and Gen. Colin Powell’s name has been removed from a list of notable Americans buried at Arlington Cemetery, and “no president” presided over more plane crashes during their first month in office as President Trump, and that ICE agents had conducted a “raid” at an elementary school, and Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., is “anti-vaccine” and President Trump “took down” President Obama’s portrait in the White House, and epstein introduced Trump to Melenia, and Vice President Vance “disparaged Elon Musk in private”, and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth requested nearly $140,000 in “upgrades” to his government residence, and President Trump was alone in wearing a blue suit to the funeral of Pope Francis, an American citizen was detained by authorities after he informed them he was, in fact, a citizen, and DOGE operatives attempted to gain access to secure spaces, and Harris would be among the most qualified presidents in recent U.S. history, diddy will be pardoned by Trump, and thomas crooks was a Republican....
@sunsporter1649 Why don't you load your stuff in a post of your own for discussion instead of parking here? Don't you have a credible presence here on this website?
@sree251 There was/is a lot of controversy over the church's behavior during the war. Especially the earlier parts. Nazi Germany was not yet a confirmed threat to the church but the Communist were, and the Nazis were vocally as anti-Communist as they were anti-Jew. And that anti-Communist Nazi enthusiasm may have, in some opinions, provided incentives for the pope to stay silent on Nazi behavior. But the Nazis later decimated the Catholic clergy in Poland because of Polish priest and religious participation with the resistance. So from Polish standpoint, Catholic Poland was betrayed by the Catholic Church for not using their pulpits to condemn Nazi behavior. So, while Catholic priest in Poland were being sent to death camps the Catholic church in Rome was mostly silent. There may have been back channels to support the resistance, but publicly they were silent,
In that era, Poland was probably the most Catholic country on earth, where tthe church and the government were almost one and the same. 90%+ professed Catholics. Today, that number is probably down to 70% or 60%. That it's not much lower is probably because the Church is bigger than the Pope. The Pope is just a man and not the church itself. Remember how Peter denied Jesus? How some of the apostles demanded proof that Jesus had risen? How they cowered in fear of their own lives? The pope is no different.
This is your perception. You are just a man. There comes a time when a spiritual calling to be something else obliterates your mortal self-identity.
Remember how Peter denied Jesus? How some of the apostles demanded proof that Jesus had risen? How they cowered in fear of their own lives? The pope is no different.
If the pope is no different, then there are only sheep without a shepherd. In this case, the wolves move in. Perhaps, Pope Leo is one sheep standing up against the wolves. He is not afraid, he said. And that is better than most.
"... the Church is defined as the congregation of all baptized persons who profess the same faith, partake of the same sacraments, and are governed by their lawful pastors under one visible head—the Pope. It is considered the mystical body of Christ on earth."
Notice the careful choice of words. "lawful pastors", not the pastors shielding pedophile priest, not a pope betraying Polish people. The Church is the mystical body of Christ, not the Pope. Christ lives in ALL of us, not just in the Pope.
Catholic history has volumes of incidents of failed leadership, and numerous examples of saints who defied their bishops or pope and were excommunicated.
The only perspective from which Vance has a point is the narrow perspective where he is on the side of the angel to start with. In this particular case, he is wrong. The roles are reversed this time out and Vance is on the side of the Fascists.. And as I recall (from my reading) The Pope at the time of WW2 was later criticized for not doing enough to condemn Hitler and the Nazis.😷
I'm trying to imagine what Europe and the rest of the world would be like today if in 1939 our parents and grandparents had just dropped to their knees and prayed as German and Japanese armies took possession of their countries.
I'm 1-12 Catholic educated and remember the class on moral ethics and apparently Leo must have missed that class. Just wars with unintended horrible consequences are well within the scope of moral virtue. If Iran hides its rocket launchers behind children hospitals and Israeli fires back, the death of those children are at the hands of the Iranians and not the Israelis who fire back.
@sree251 no that was me. You're very senile at a young age. And I didn't say I was expert at anything but I have plenty of experience. It was Nuclear fail safe systems

The jury is still out on this. We were led to believe Osama Bin Laden was behind this. The twin towers are now believed to be the work of the kind of people who killed JFK and staged Trump's assassination.
Vance can disagree with the Pope, but he must defer to him when it comes to theology, or produce some sort of PhD in theology, because that's the entry level for a Catholic Bishop.
It doesn't matter how well accredited Vance is. He is still the sheep, an even-toed ungulate . The Pope is the shepherd, transformed by divine grace to be the vicar of Christ.
@AthrillatheHunt OK. Lets do this. First point. Lets be clear we are not talking about balancing the budget. Thats a totally different thing involving how much America spends against how much tax it raises. The last person to to that was Clinton. Second Point. Reducing the deficit doesnt mean paying anything back to reduce the overall debt to the world. It merely means continuing to borrow from the world every month. But at a slower rate than the previous year..So still going broke. But not as fast.. And that was Obama.😷
@AthrillatheHunt This is the irony of fiscal responsibility in America. Imposing spending limits on Americans makes you hellishly unpopular at home. Domestic prices rise because you are borrowing less overseas. Services are cut back because the tax you raised doesnt go as far. Thats an economic fact on both sides. I make no judgement calls on the politics. This is economics 101. Spend more than you earn and it comes back to bite you eventually. (And for America, read "eventually" as "Any minute now") And it will be a huge bite.. The other point that is worth making is that the government doesnt control the economy. Money does that. Depending on how much there is and who has it.. So Obamas recession was not Obamas. It was Americas, for the dot.com bubble that burst and was headed off by the real estate bubble that gave us the Big Short..Which gave the globe the Global financial Crisis for trusting the $US.. Which in turn had the smart people with the real money start looking for a different way to do business and that led to BRICS and the fall of the petro dollar. And all because Americans wouldnt live within their means.. Here endeth the lesson...😷
There are two different issues here which Vance is conveniently rolled into one WW2 and we America is doing now are separate issues... WW2 was well and truly justified to stop evil... America's current actions are verging on that evil.,
@sunsporter1649 Now, as Convivial was saying, the organised crime cabal curently destroying the US constantly carries out actions that smack of evil.
How does the US military fight evil when the worst evil in many decades has slithered into the heart of the US and into the hearts of those who feed it and defend it.
