Why can't we engage in private charity?
emiliya · 22-25, F
@BohemianBabe What do they need to earn for you to increase their taxes?

You cannot end laws for billionaires to hide their wealth. Come on now. Am I in Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland? You make me question whether I am in a hospital for the perpetually silly and ignorant.

Billionaires are not fools. They have means to hide their wealth and you cannot do a thing about it. The presidents and prime ministers cannot do anything either. It would require great international effort and compliance of other countries, countries that find the billionaires hiding their money to be very beneficial.

You know, money does not grow on trees. We have to earn it. We have to try to get to the top. What else is there to do?

food prices are a public health issue. Do you support food stamps, farm subsidies, school lunches.
In the name of competetion and price fairness (in opposition of corporate farming such as industrial corn syrup; which contains methyl mercury and is neurotoxic) maybe some government owned grocery stores is worth a try.
Thrust · 56-60, M
this guy posts from Lobotomy Island. I think he's their king 👑
emiliya · 22-25, F
@Thrust How many others live on Lobotomy Island? Many it seems.
Thrust · 56-60, M
@emiliya half of SW for sure!
The difference is that in the Soviet Union, the government controlled all of the grocery stores and there was no democracy, so the public had no say in how the stores were run.
Mamdani wants some grocery stores to be state-run, he doesn't want to ban private grocery stores, and of course there's still going to be democracy, so ultimately it will be New Yorkers who decide how those stores work.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
The two scenarios are completely different. The Soviet Union operated a command economy in which the state managed all aspects of food production and distribution. The NY mayor is reacting to a morally unacceptable situation in which the some neighbourhoods have become "food deserts" and the poorest in society do not have accesd to a reliable and affordable supply of nutritious food. In other words, government is stepping in where the private sector has failed or neglected to serve all New Yorkers. What could possibly be objectionable about this?
emiliya · 22-25, F
@SunshineGirl The government is not necessary for a family or small community, but you could say it is necessary for a nation. This would be a lawless and immoral nation that is unable to take care of its affairs without being told how to do it. Is it good to encourage this kind of abject failure and uselessness?

The food industry is there to provide food for us to live and make money from it. If you are unable to afford enough food to live, something has gone very wrong. The parents have failed to provide, and their parents have failed to provide. We need to be thinking about our moral failures, not what the government can do to mask those moral failures, pretending they do not do grave harm to the society they govern.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@emiliya A nation is made up of families and small communities.

The failure is of the large retailers not operating stores in the poorest neighbourhoods because the profit margins are too low. Low income families are denied choice if they do not have private transportation or they are too busy working to go further afield. The government is obliged to step in to redress this failure. If it does not, the cost to the taxpayer in terms of health subsidy and lost economuc opportunity will mount. In my opinion they should also levy the food industry for burdening the public purse.
emiliya · 22-25, F
@SunshineGirl It is made up of people who are forced to submit to the whims of the state, including allowing migrants who do not share the religion or values or are not willing to adopt the religion or values of the state. You will say the state is secular, but I can tell you that those entering Europe are not.

Where I am from in southern Russia, you have to walk to the store or supermarkets if there is no transportation. My grandparents have a vehicle, which my grandfather can still drive. When they were children, they had no electricity and had to walk everywhere. I have walked miles to get to places too. My parents bought a home that was in the middle of nowhere in southern Spain and when they were not driving me, I walked or rode my bike.
iamthe99 · M
Massively exaggerated of course. He's suggesting just FIVE state run grocery stores, which would keep food prices down, and guess who's foaming at the mouth? Billionaire Gristedes supermarkets owner John Catsimatidis, who told the hard-right New York Post he would consider moving his business conglomerate to New Jersey should Mamdani win the general election.

Go then 🤣
@iamthe99 Could be dealing with 'food deserts' AKA 'food apartheid,' areas with limited access to affordable and nutritious food.
DavidT8899 · 22-25, M
@iamthe99 Im sure he will -along with many other wealthy individuals and business leaders who keep the city afloat.New York is in for a fun time if he wins.🙄
emiliya · 22-25, F
@iamthe99 It does not matter whether it is five or fifty supermarkets. Things have a habit of expanding and getting bigger. Is this an idea you want to see come to fruition? Why?
Did Russia (or the Soviet Union) ever have state-run liquor stores like the US has? That's right, 17 states in the United States that have state monopolies over the wholesaling or retailing of some or all categories of alcoholic beverages, such as beer, wine, and distilled spirits. And the great majority vote RED!

I feel for NYC as they have no idea at the trouble they just inflicted on their state!
@Unefilletrescurieuse we will be seeing them soon down here. They are putting up apartments and houses up as fast as they can to get ready. They rush down here and then they talk about how great New York is. LOL

Russia's problem was a supply problem.

Major US cities have "food deserts" where there ARE no groceries.

Not the same thing.

And the NYC mayor can't dictate the economy in a series of 5-yr plans.

lol
@emiliya You are too young to know about the problems of the Soviet Union, but you do have an experience of Russian stores with empty shelves.

As you already noted, a supply problem. Not all demand could be met. A supply problem.

An economy needs good & services "on offer" as well as consumers capable of buying them. The Soviet Union had severe shortages of product in spite of eager consumers (esp. for, say, food).
emiliya · 22-25, F
@SomeMichGuy “Supply problem” masks the other problems. There was plentiful food, especially in south. Demand could be met. The centralized planning, preference for the elite cities and “nomenklatura”, lack of incentives, and very low pay meant it was not met.
@emiliya You can say what you want, but whether it was bad planning, low production, corruption, poor logistics, shelves were often empty...which we call a supply chain problem.

Demand wasn't met.

It also didn't help that the Soviet Union regularly lied about population in order to seem bigger, a sad and useless feint.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
I did not hear that.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Thrust you don't give up trying lame ways to avoid the truth of how radical you are.
Thrust · 56-60, M
@samueltyler2

Why didn't you just type "I know you are but what am I?" Since that's all you said

@MayorOfCrushtown My best friend is from there. LOL I refuse to let her rub off on me… I need to keep my vocabulary intact to converse with the many Yankees in Pinehurst. Lol Her husband is from here…

@Thrust yeah boy!!! Hahaha 🤣
kodiac · 22-25, M
He won't get that 65 million from Trump . If he wins could we move new york to California?
@kodiac This country is destroying their own self… but too blind to see it. 😞
He is not the mayor! He did win the primary on Tuesday when Cuomo conceded.
@soar2newhighs He's almost certainly going to win the general. Though the capitalist establishment hates him so much, I guess we can't be too sure.
@soar2newhighs so no public food for you! No no no! Pay more, die younger and have only corporate food. Yes! Solve you!
🤦🏻‍♂ .. Oh ffs

The election isn't until November. He hasn't actually been elected yet.
@GerOttman and the food issue doesn't concern you! I'll aggree. Overwork and pay more, die younger and have utter contempt for me! And no socialism. And no talking about your national needs! You deserve the results you have now. A final solution to the population that's dying to vote conservative.
GerOttman · 70-79, M
@Roundandroundwego are you on pain meds? I hope things work out for you! get some rest.
NYC will get exactly what it voted for. More taxes, a reduction in their standard of living, more urban decay, more criminal activity and more violence.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
something tells me this is misinformation
emiliya · 22-25, F
Covid-19 lockdowns made food prices rise. Why did people support them?
Thrust · 56-60, M
@emiliya They follow like sheep. I still believe 2/3rds the population would line up for another untested clot shot if Taylor Swift or the like told them
emiliya · 22-25, F
@Thrust You have a funny way of putting things.

Who is excited to visit one of Mamdani's state-run grocery stores after November?
HiYou12 · 51-55, M
They will get it in NYC because of all the for profit stores will flee the city
@HiYou12 The plan is to have five state-run grocery stories, one in each borough. The private stores will be fine.
rudy should throw his hat in the ring...
be funny if he won..

New film ‘Live Not By Lies’ exposes threat of ‘Soviet-era totalitarianism’ in the West

The new Angel Studios documentary draws chilling parallels between Soviet-era suppression and today’s speech-policing in Britain and the West.

What's the difference between a bread line and Putin?

There are skid marks in front of the bread line.
At least we could have that! Feeding ourselves instead of being too poor to try and letting corporations control the food supply is very mainstream USA! Tell us how your sise justified the deaths. Nah! They're your deaths and you are better dead than red, right,?
