Newly elected New York City mayor wants state-run grocery stores

In Russia, we had Гастроном (Gastronom), where people often had to wait in long lines and there were frequent food shortages and lack of variety. It was the Moscow and other city dwellers who ate well. The state-run grocery stores where I am from in southern Russia were very poor and were forced to send the agricultural produce to the major cities. Russia now has a variety of grocery stores to choose from, many of which continue to have cheap foods. Zohran Mamdani wants to send NYC back in time and turn it into an anti-American communist pit.

He also plans to spend $65 million on “gender-affirming care.”

food prices are a public health issue. Do you support food stamps, farm subsidies, school lunches.
In the name of competetion and price fairness (in opposition of corporate farming such as industrial corn syrup; which contains methyl mercury and is neurotoxic) maybe some government owned grocery stores is worth a try.
@jehova I shopped in government supported public interest supermarkets before. The farming was socialism there, too. You could see the fabulous farms and how they got the food to market. That country had only 12 million people at the time but grew eighty percent of European potatoes. The population was the tallest and longest living on earth. Everyone knows that's not something that the West is going to allow, going forward.
@jehova and when he gives the guy who collects the carts $30 an hour who will be able to afford groceries

@saragoodtimes minimum wage is set by the state as well as city officials. Further if prices come down wage doesnt have to increase. Indeed if prices fall wage might stablize and eventually be able to decrease.
@jehova systematic modern farming for the population threatens to be more efficient and better than corporate food.

@Roundandroundwego could be this proposed model by the new mayor hasnt been attempted in new york before. Maybe itll help.
@jehova if you listened to his campaign speeches, he wants to defund the police, do away with privately owned houses and make the minimum wage $30 an hour. good luck NYC hope you get what you deserve
@jehova there's a whole lot of stuff government should do from coast to coast that Americans simply don't demand. They're lacking safe public transportation, socialized medical care and social housing. The Great GDP that their country boats about is in mortgages and insurance because they're not going to allow socialism.

@saragoodtimes its no less extreme than what djt is screaming. Maybe its worth a try. Minimum wage is currently 16.50 id hope this increase would be in increments.
@jehova Trump is bringing this Country back to th great Nation it was meant to be. That socialist will ruin NYC and bring the entire state down

I come from a family who grew and produced food. That is what my grandparents are good at. My grandfather is now rich through it. I find myself wondering how my parents came to be so educated, as their parents were and are rural farming types. Regardless, they still knew how to grow food, and did.

My paternal grandfather is very industrial. He laughs at things like this. I find it hard to see where you are coming from too. You may as well be from another planet.

@saragoodtimes trump isnt doing it congress is. Trump has declared bankruptcy on his own several times. The government has three branches anything one branch does must be proofread and approved by the other two. DJT is dismantling safeguards. So far Congress has passed some things executive orders are temporary so your almighty declarations of what Trump did are temporarily in place. What did he do? Maybe he introduced some ideas. Then it goes to congress then the judiciary hears any challenges of its legality. It is a process.
Government is a collaborative effort. Democratic socialism is what most of modern Western Europe does. It has flaws maybe America can do it better.
