Is there an optimal way to discuss politics on SW or are we stuck in a never-ending cycle of passive-aggressive comments and escalating emotions ?

Top | New | Old
The latter I’m afraid. The problem being that no one can agree on what is a fact. People only accept information as factual when it supports their already deeply entrenched point of view (aka confirmation bias.) So one side presenting their proof to the other side is pretty much a waste of time and the arguing akin to a dog chasing its tail around.

@OlderSometimesWiser This. And thus it will ever be.

Is the pot-stirrer displeased with the results of his efforts? 😁

@Nimbus 🤔there are a lot of level headed people on similar worlds who are level headed on both side of the political fence . i am afraid it is when the other less level headed get involved this is when the trouble starts sadly when they start being provocative with name calling and personal insults

@smiler2012 Good point!

To answer both questions...yes. There is an optimal way to disuss politics but it takes all people cooperatively doing it and that is unlikely.

The simple answer is, no….or maybe, hell no.

There are a number of SW folks that will post a question, and when you don’t give an answer that aligns with their particular brand of politics, will respond with insults and disparaging comments. Two in particular (that I won’t name) are so obnoxious and belligerent that I’m surprised they’ve not been blocked out of SW existence.

I’m all for meaningful debate about the issues. But that’s not possible on SW. That being the case, I won’t express a political opinion on SW, because it’s not worth the rise in my blood pressure.
There are things that people identify themself with, e.g. nationality, religion, and political views … that’s why many get stubborn about them …

I wish that everyone would learn to have progressive dialogues about them …

@Soossie Me too.

I think we are stuck in a never-ending cycle of passive-aggressive comments and escalating emotions if that Nelson Mandela post was anything to go by.
We're stuck.

What gets me is people here who are proffesing Christians block me just because they disagree with my views.

They could be encouraging posts and being encouraged but hey 🤷
WayneRuss · M
I never discuss politics tbh. I certainly have my views but I prefer to keep them to myself. No time for drama or politics. I try to keep it lighthearted and fun for the most part, when here.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
I'm really not sure, cuz you can post any kind of question or make any kind of answer and someone's going to try to school you politically ,whether you were being political or not .
FreestyleArt · 36-40, M
I come and go... Don't really care about criticism.

I'll be on the topic and then find another topic like always. Sometimes I own up my mistakes and that's it.
4meAndyou · F
I don't know what you mean! 🤣🤣🤣 I have no problem whatsoever if someone wants to disagree with me, politically. How else would I know who to block??? 🤣🤣🤣
seems like with most topics, if you keep your discussions to individuals and not just everyone people are more... well less aggressive

Nope
You bring up either candidate and the bullying begins. Thats why I avoid the subject.😌
Primnproper · 56-60, F
Basically NO! They are like children in a playground..

No mudslinging would be a great first rule
Just respond to people as if they said what they said in the nicest way possible (even if they said it mean), and when responses get too long, cut your next one down to one sentence if you can.

We can only speak the truth, if the Democrats are thick and very slow like Liverpool supporters I can only help educate them a little bit as most are brain dead
@SW-User Translation: You, Ned, are part of the problem!

Its the nature of politics right now. But its very unproductive. I hope it stops soon, so we can talk issues that effect peoples lives.😷
Yeah.. well you got a big nose 🤓
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Use an elaborate and extended metaphor to deliver your message. That confuses most of the usual suspects 🙂
gol979 · 46-50, M
I doubt it. Modern day politics is spoonfed binary options for us plebs to argue over whilst the parasite class carries on.

Its getting so obvious now that its hard to make out why reds are arguing with blues......barely a difference between them.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@gol979 Just recognise that the money is the problem..😷
gol979 · 46-50, M
@whowasthatmaskedman partly.....but some of the parasite class have so much money it becomes moot. Its not all about money, even though it is an important part of the context
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@gol979 The right do choose candidates of themselves. This is probably more evident in Britain where the class system is slower to break down and Eton and Harrow self sort the "right people"😷
Online? Sure.
As long as we're okay with US aggression and we only know two candidates, Trump and Biden, we're seen here. Otherwise no.
Dolimyte · 41-45, M
I find the political stuff on here is either an echo chamber where everyone is jerking eachother off, or it's a bunch of whiny name calling.

I'll tell you why its so difficult, its because a great many of you think that this is the second coming:

"Did you ever notice that US is spelled like us? U and then S. A lot of people don't know that."

“They destroy everything, they’re horrible, the most expensive energy there is,” Trump said of the wind turbines. “They ruin the environment, they kill the birds, they kill the whales. They cause cancer."
Starcrossed · 46-50, F
Honestly, it was close to this time of year last presidential election cycle that that escalating passive aggressive politico kind of nonsense got to be too much and I ended up taking an extended break from the site all together.
Well, for a start, you'll need a VIP account, since the freebies only have a block quota of 500...

I can deal with the petty emotions what irks me the most is when people lie in the most easily discredited way possible. Like, I know how to google yearly unemployment rates with a single search. Its just lazy and condescending.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
It's going to vary person by person. Unlike, say, 90% percent of the people, I will not respond emotionally to someone who disagrees with me. But this is incredibly rare, sadly.
Nimbus · M
@uncalled4 Sometimes it's just not worth the effort.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@Nimbus It's rarely worth the effort. Some people have a response about politics that is not reasonable. Now, perhaps if it were, we might not be in quite the situation we are in.
Thodsis · 51-55, M
We could have some sort of reasonable discussion.

Or we could just continue with taking the piss out of the Tango slapper. And vent our unhappiness in a way that might just bring a smile to others.... :)
