DirecTV Removes Conservative News Network in Blow to Free Speech

"The largest satellite provider in the United States said late Friday it will drop One America News, a move that could financially cripple the rightwing TV network known for fueling conspiracy theories about the 2020 election.

The announcement by DirecTV, which is 70% owned by AT&T, comes three months after a Reuters investigation revealed that OAN’s founder testified that AT&T inspired him to create the network. Court testimony also showed that OAN receives nearly all of its revenue from DirecTV."
RedBaron · M
OAN news is as phony as a $3 bill and the BS about the election being stolen from Trump. Good riddance.

votes in person, the individual provides the
appropriate State or local election official
with a handwritten signature; or
``(ii) in the case of an individual who
votes by mail, the individual submits with the
ballot a handwritten signature.

Air tight provisions, what could possibly go wrong?
@sunsporter1649 I get it. You don't want mere peasants voting. No surprise the right wing came out of the monarchist movement.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow
(a) Requiring States To Establish and Operate Automatic
Registration System.--
(1) In general.--The chief State election official of each
State shall establish and operate a system of automatic
registration for the registration of eligible individuals to
vote for elections for Federal office in the State, in
accordance with the provisions of this part.
(2) Definition.--The term ``automatic registration'' means
a system that registers an individual to vote in elections for
Federal office in a State, if eligible, by electronically
transferring the information necessary for registration from
government agencies to election officials of the State so that,
unless the individual affirmatively declines to be registered,
the individual will be registered to vote in such elections.

Air tight, right?

So...they had a contract, the contract was not renewed. Likely because of lack of revenue. Or because probable damage to image, also resulting in the lack of revenue.
If you have directtv you can also not renew your contract with them upon expiration.
See, capitalism at work. You have a problem with that?
Carla · 61-69, F
@Carla Both are owned by AT&T. It is called killing a failed product.

It is not a "blow to free speech". The channel OAN is free to broadcast its lies on other television providers, or even the internet. They are even free to reinvent themselves as a streaming service. No government agency can stop them.
@sunsporter1649 Your ignorance and lack of education is not my responsibility.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Do not blame @sunsporter1649. He is clearly suffering from cranial trauma.
@ididntknow I feel no need to answer your tu quoque fallacy. If you cannot focus on the topic at hand without distracting with a dramatic "J'accuse!" then you have no argument.
DUUUDE!!! You don't like capitalism? You want government regulators to tell businesses what they can and can't do? Because the First Amendment doesn't tell a business what they can and can't sell. Need a First Amendment refresher? Lucky for you, I have it in CARTOON FORM, LOL!!!

@sunsporter1649 Somehow I sense a conspiracy theory here. Lemme guess - George Soros?

Let me remind you that Direct TV broadcasts from satellites. Not the internet. Satellites. Ready to admit you're wrong about net neutrality??
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@ElwoodBlues Read it again.

""Critical Information Needs Study (CIN), which as part of its conclusions, required researchers to enter newsrooms and inquire about how editorial decisions were made. The study was to include print media over which the FCC has no jurisdiction." "
@sunsporter1649 I read the words again. Now answer my question: DirectTV selects and sells various TV products that they beam down from satellites they own. Are they or are they not free to choose what products to sell?

!! UPDATE !!
Two weeks later, and ol' sporty still hasn't figured out whether or not DirectTV is free to choose what products to sell, LOL!!!
Budwick · 70-79, M
We canceled DirecTV shortly after AT&T bought them.
DirecTV was floundering then.
A huge wave of cancellations I'm sure hurt further.
The left just doesn't seem to care about how bad they suck
from Biden to DirecTV and the NBA - all very unpopular,
Carla · 61-69, F
@Budwick 90%? Okay. Not a 90% reduction in viewership based on highly viewed big news stories? Yes bud. A reduction based on viewership during highly watched stories.
Get your story straight or no one will take you seriously.

Right...sponsors bring revenue. Programming brings sponsors. Bad programming, poor return from sponsors.
Spin that bud.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@Carla CNN has seen its viewership nosedive by a staggering 90 percent both overall and in the critical demographics. That's a common news story - quoted word for word. Try to keep up - you are already not taken seriously. You are what we call an agitator.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
i predict now. at the height of election fraud results coming out, starting in Arizona.. jeffy epstiens friends all being named.
well see the entire net get shutdown one way or another.

any takers?.

Only 8? Bullshit. That’s just the opening act.

wildbill83 · 36-40, M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I only see one of two possibilities

1- she gets suicided before testimony
2- her testimony gets twisted by marxist media to suit their narrative, then gets suicided
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Sources now saying that two new prison guards have been hired to watch over Ms. Maxwell. Names not revealed but they have a striking resemblance to Bill and Hillary Clinton. 🤔

@Subsumedpat the irony.. alex lizard ppl jones has more cred then the entire lame stream media..

@Subsumedpat you can still watch CNN and get all the propaganda you need

Maybe if one america news did not treat bald faced lies like trump really won the election as truth then it would not have happened.

How is that a blow to "free speech."

Ever hear of this thing called "The Internet"?

What's stopping One America News from broadcasting on it?
beckyromero · 36-40, F
@sunsporter1649

Would you care to discuss talk radio shows?

Because the Fairness Doctrine you want to re-implement would apply there as well.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@beckyromero LOL, every time you left-wing nut job put anything on radio it fails miserable
beckyromero · 36-40, F
@sunsporter1649

Part of the problem is that talk radio tends to veer to the extremes, just as political activism tends to be.
Elessar · 26-30, M
It's called capitalism, Sporty. Ain't you lovers of unregulated capitalism?
deadgerbil · 22-25, F
Is DirecTV a private company? Them removing OAN isn't a blow to free speech.

Sad day for the network, but free speech isn't violated
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@sunsporter1649 As difficult as it is to imagine, possibly those people running the company understand more about it than you do..😷
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@whowasthatmaskedman Let me get this straight: Chevrolet sells 90% less automobiles one year and GM keeps making Chevrolets?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@sunsporter1649 I dont have those figures. But its quite possible. GM doesnt just make Chevies. GM is global. a quarter of a Chevy content is Chinese anyway and there is next years model. PLUS How did everyone else do? There are a lot of factors. Note the lead time on a new model can be 5 years.😷
OAN's founder got played by AT&T into creating a network it would later wash it's hands of and cut relations with?

Please feel free to connect the dots.

How did this happen, and what's the connection with Al Jazeera, for what that's worth?
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
I guess having a bunch of nutcases spreading conspiratorial messages and sucking up to a cult figure kicked off from the menu of a private compagny is a real blow to free speech. Cry me a river.
ididntknow · 51-55, M
If it’s left wing opinion, it’s the truth
If it’s right wing opinion it’s conspiracy theory,
Funny that
Lol no. Both are owned by AT&T and the CEO even admitted the network had a value of literally zero without the captive audience of Direct TV.

This is AT&T killing a failed product.

Do 2 seconds of research man.
@sunsporter1649 Reuters reported in October 2021 that Robert Herring Sr. testified in court that the network was created at the urging of executives of AT&T, which through its subsidiary DirecTV has since been the source of up to 90% of the network's revenues
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow And that from a left-wing nut-job islamo-nazi marxist supporting the failed socialism policies he so adores
@sunsporter1649 Actually, this comes from court statements, statements by the owner and publicly available facts.

I am sorry that doesn't fit your victim complex.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
Shit man ! Where will you get your information from now ?!!
ididntknow · 51-55, M
@RodionRomanovitch GETTR, rumble, locals, butchute, Parler, telegram, DLive, They must be so pissed off, and of course truth social, coming in February, it must piss them off so much,

Ummm…that’s practicing free speech. Dealing a blow to free speech would be the government coming in same saying that they can’t.

@sunsporter1649 Cool phrase, man

@sunsporter1649 that's what Comrad Biden wants. Let's go Brandon. Trump 2024. Free America.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@sunsporter1649 If it paid money to keep them, they would. And they know in advance how much it will cost them in lost subs. Thats what the decision was made on.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@whowasthatmaskedman Only one voice permitted....
carpediem · 61-69, M
These days, everything is a conspiracy theory if it doesn’t align with what the main stream wants you to believe. Everything. It used to be that BS conspiracy theories would simply go away and fail by virtue of a lack of an audience.

Now, the audience is removed by those people who control what you should think.
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
DirecTV is losing a few million customers per year in recent years, don't imagine they'll be around much longer anyways...

too bad, with all those letters that reek of desperation they send me trying to get me to subscribe gone, I'll have to find a new source of fire starters... 🤔
fascists are gunna fascist..

I don't watch One America News, I watch Fox News. But I disagree with DirecTV's decision to remove OAN. Let people choose what they want to watch.
Yep, capitalism sucks. How dare a private company decide if they want to do business with another private company.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
So we boycott direct tv and go to internet tv

It’s everything you already watch for $10 a month
eli1601 · 70-79, M
@DeluxedEdition Actually, I will use this to negotiate a lower price. Threaten to cancel and go to DISH and they will offer all kinds of perks. Also part of the free market.
ididntknow · 51-55, M
The left are really in denial on this subject aren’t they, no wonder the democrats can always rely on their vote, absolutely brainwashed indoctrinated useful idiots
@sunsporter1649 DirectTV selects and sells various TV products that they beam down from satellites they own. Are they or are they not free to choose what products to sell?
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@ElwoodBlues "This happened after Biden came out and said misinformation needs to be stopped and urged big tech to stop all the misinformation."

Strange coincidence.....
@sunsporter1649 You keep ducking the question. Is directTV free to choose what products to beam down from the satellites they own? Yes or no???
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
I'm glad they removed OAN, good job.
FreestyleArt · 31-35, M
While they're at it. they need to worry about Starlink. Starlink can shut down Facebook. Twitter and all the BS Left Nut Job News outlets and all U.S Broadcast channels if they want to. Just a matter of time
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
You can still get OANN on Roku and Pluto TV. Besides, with streaming services being popular these days, I don't doubt that Direct TV is losing money every day.
ididntknow · 51-55, M
@Barefooter25 so glad they are losing money
ididntknow · 51-55, M
This happened after Biden came out and said misinformation needs to be stopped and urged big tech to stop all the misinformation
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@ididntknow Funny coincidence, is it not?
ididntknow · 51-55, M
@sunsporter1649 This kind of stuff, is so obvious now, if people don’t wake up now, they never ever will
eli1601 · 70-79, M
I have DIRECTV and you couldn't even get OAN unless you paid for one of the higher level plans. So they were set up to fail.
