DirecTV Removes Conservative News Network in Blow to Free Speech

"The largest satellite provider in the United States said late Friday it will drop One America News, a move that could financially cripple the rightwing TV network known for fueling conspiracy theories about the 2020 election.

The announcement by DirecTV, which is 70% owned by AT&T, comes three months after a Reuters investigation revealed that OAN’s founder testified that AT&T inspired him to create the network. Court testimony also showed that OAN receives nearly all of its revenue from DirecTV."

Ummm…that’s practicing free speech. Dealing a blow to free speech would be the government coming in same saying that they can’t.

@SW-User "President Joe Biden called for social media companies to censor American citizens online during a speech Jan. 13, amidst a presidency marked by censorship and government crackdowns.

Biden made a “special appeal to social media companies and media outlets” calling on them to “please deal with the misinformation and disinformation that's on your shows” in his address. He said, “It has to stop," admonishing Big Tech and the media for somehow “sitting on the sidelines'' by not censoring enough speech."

@sunsporter1649 He asked them to do something. They can do whatever they want. You have no idea how anything works, do you?

@SW-User "White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki also called for Big Tech to take pro-censorship actions. “There's [sic] …proposed changes that we have made to social media platforms, including Facebook, and those specifically are four key steps.” Those included publicly sharing the impact of “misinformation”; “a robust enforcement strategy”; “faster action against harmful posts”; and promoting “quality information sources.”

She noted that, “Decisions to regulate or hold to account any platform would certainly be a policy decision, but in the interim, we’re going to continue to call out disinformation, and call out where that information travels.”
