Why is it that political questions on SW always lead to arguments ?

Which leads to people blocking other people, some of which were once friends.
What's wrong with a pleasant discussion?

AbbeyRhode · F
For one thing, the media has worked very hard to drive a wedge between people, with their race-baiting, lying, and hate-mongering.
For another, it's no longer simply a difference of supporting one candidate or another, with little difference between the two. This time, one man loves this country and its citizens, and is working hard in their best interests. The other candidate hates this country, its laws, customs, and history, and supports terrorism, open borders, censorship, and Communism. There is really no middle ground this time.
4meAndyou · F
@Nimbus Yes, but don't you fellows also drive on the opposite side of the road? 🤣🤣
Budwick · 70-79, M
@AbbeyRhode Abbey has the best, the truthful, the honest answer!
AbbeyRhode · F
@Budwick Thank you! 😊
When the question is posed like..
: why are trump voters White supremacists?

It don’t leave much wiggle room for a cordial conversation 🤣
Viper · M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Very true!

Or my canidate didn't win, so must be fraud or the new world order, here is theory #13,856 which like the others still has no proof...

The subject from the start is biased to the crazy degree... that's just going to get the name calling from the start from some people. And depending on whom it is... they might deserve it as they do it too
Nimbus · M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I see your point but one must try :)
the claims of no fraud have become boring and making the ppl saying so look dumb

akindheart · 70-79, F
the operative word is pleasant. people can't disagree nicely on here. AND what they do is troll your posts looking for an opportunity to blast you. so I block instead
Nimbus · M
@akindheart Yes but would we react like this IRL?

I think not.

It's the anonymity that makes people brave.
akindheart · 70-79, F
@Nimbus true...along with the fake profiles they put up.
4meAndyou · F
@Nimbus IRL they would probably walk up behind you and bash you in the head. Sorry. Just thinking about their behavior at the Million Maga March in Washington D.C.
SW-User
It is usually the phrasing of the questions themselves, which are often antagonistic and accusatory in tone. Most people respond better to civil questions which are actually looking for answers rather than closed statements posed as questions.
@SW-User and bingo was his name-o 🕺🏻👍
Nimbus · M
@SW-User Good point.
TexChik · F
Just doesn’t seem possible does it ? 😉
TexChik · F
@RogueLoner hahaha
ron122 · 41-45, M
@TexChik Yep you know who I'm talking about
ron122 · 41-45, M
@RogueLoner She's a real sweetheart. I still think it's a guy posing as a woman
deadgerbil · 26-30, M
If I had a dollar for every time a political discussion got nasty lol

Some people can't offer any political commentary without the word 'libtard' or 'conservtard' being thrown into the convo or other snide remarks.

And then how questions are posed to people often set the table for toxic conversation.
Viper · M
@deadgerbil or just the memes, which doesn't even fit the argument at hand and don't hand anything to the conversation.
deadgerbil · 26-30, M
@Viper yup. I love memes myself, but they should be supported by an argument as not everything can be boiled down to a simple meme, and the memes themselves should be accurate.

So often people post memes that are way off the mark in an attempt to discredit the other side.
deadgerbil · 26-30, M
@Nimbus
I guess all we can do is to hope it dies down by next summer!

covid? Hopefully lol

I have my doubts about it going away that fast tho, as people who take basic preventative measures like wearing masks are branded as wired haired politically correct liberals who foam at the mouth! Lol
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
It has got now that people can't seem to debate like adults and listen and and respect other people's views and opinions, they have to be right and you wrong , this was proved during Brexit,
Nimbus · M
@Nyloncapes Indeed.

Anyone would think it was a United vs. Liverpoo fixture :)
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
the people I block were never friends, I tolerated till I couldn’t any more. Some of these people will shit up any post they disagree with and it’s like they live to keep it going around and around.
Nimbus · M
@cherokeepatti Yes, I have had that experience too Patti.
The rise of Trumpism has made politics much more difficult to discuss pleasantly, imo, for a number of different reasons.

For example, if I start to talk about some of the reasons, like the substitution of ad hominem attacks, whatabouts and role of faith over reason, and tribalism,antisocial behavior and respect for others, its likely to insult some folks who identify with or value some or all of these things above other things.

Its not impossible, but it's often hard to do.
TexChik · F
@MistyCee you with your petty condescension beg for an angry retort. Trumpism? Please. 8 years of obama had nasty libs at every turn. We were all racist if we dare to disagree with the kenyan. You my dear, incite just as much as any garden variety foul mouthed libtard
@TexChik LOL. See what I mean?

Inciteful or not, your response didn't address my post at all (or maybe not much anyway) and mostly focused on how nasty libs are and how "inciting" I am and how much I resemble my "tribe."

BTW, I'm not denying that my post was "inciting." Its kind of my point. Its really hard to have a pleasant discussion about stuff when we can't, essentially, agree on the rules of "civil" engagement.

On the other hand, its NOT impossible. I put out the bait, and you bit. I know you well enough to know that you probably knew you were biting, and I'd like to think we can "pleasantly", or at least, civilly, even talk about the tactics I employed and your response.
Nimbus · M
@MistyCee Exactly, it's not impossible.

We should all try harder.
VampireQueen · 26-30, F
Because people are more blunt on the internet. Unlike real life where your words can have social consequences
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@VampireQueen You are just trolling. Where I come from we are known for our brutal honesty online or off. We always call a turnip a turnip and we often make enemies online because we didn't pretend it was a tulip.
VampireQueen · 26-30, F
@Crazychick Okay. Well I don’t think so. You aren’t changing my mind so why continue this conversation? To insult me for not thinking like you do? Grow up dude.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@VampireQueen I am not a dude. You are a troll and I'm blocking you.
One of the difficulties sometimes is that we feel things are right in a way it's hard to put into words. When someone else puts up what they believe are facts which contradict that inner conviction what comes out is a defence against a hurt and fundamentally irrational until we can spend a moment thinking it through.

However, for me the whole point of debate is to try to become closer to people by understanding where they are coming from. I hadn't a clue why some people voted the way they did for/against Brexit or Trump: it was beyond my comprehension. I now know their thinking. Where I have a contrary view I have appreciated - and still do - those who take the time to robustly explain their reasoning (even when I think its unreasonable) and are prepared to give me an honest exchange. At the point they use personal abuse, I know we have gone beyond the rational and into the emotional and there is no reasoning left.

I have found myself less amazed at 'crazy ideas' sometime when I realise the thinking process behind it.
Nimbus · M
@Frank52 Good post.
Rationality like this is something we all should aspire to.
Because they don’t know how to discuss pleasantly, keep an open mind or accept differences😂 All of those things require effort and it’s much easier to block and ignore😉
Nimbus · M
@Haniazed Exactly!
Cuz some cultures tend to have insecurities or emotional/identity attachments with politics. The majority of the west seems to have this. Hence why it feels less like a logical analysis if policy and results and more so a "my team vs your team"
Nimbus · M
@TheBlackPowerRanger Akin to a sporting event.

That's likely!
Picklebobble2 · 61-69, M
Trump and Johnson and the like polarize opinion.
And when folk feel disenfranchised, as many do, that polarization leads to extremes of thinking and support.
Picklebobble2 · 61-69, M
@Nimbus .....and then Ken Livingstone came along !
.....and then Margaret Thatcher came along......etc.
Nimbus · M
@Picklebobble2 Ad infinitum!
Picklebobble2 · 61-69, M
@Nimbus Exactly ! In times of trouble you quickly learn who is worth investing your time in.

And currently we have a bunch of (somewhat) self-entitled independently wealthy never done a days work in their lives people in charge !

Total disconnect with those they say they represent.
Magenta · F
Because humans want to be right more than almost anything. NO-ONE is going to change their mind so it results in a constant power struggle.
Nimbus · M
@Magenta Good point.
People are unwilling to admit they might be wrong.

Just look how many can't say the words 'I'm sorry' also.
We’re tribal.. let’s fight!
Nimbus · M
Viper · M
Nothing wrong with a discussion, pleasant or otherwise...

But sometimes people say extremely stupid stuff, and you got to inform them, that it was not the smartest thing to say...
Viper · M
@Nimbus If it's friend, or even someone I don't know, I usually do.

If it's someone that continues to repeat lies...

Like Obama is not a black man...

Or keeps citing lies, which others EASILY poke holes in and basically prove can't be the case, without doing much research at all...

Then I might call the idiot, an idiot.
Nimbus · M
@Viper I guess 'an idiot' might be considered something mild :)
Viper · M
@Nimbus if that's mild, then I think I'm good... because other than a selected few, I don't believe I get that much crazier that that. (Most of the time).
helenS · 36-40, F
Yes – too many fights over politics and religion. 😐
Nimbus · M
@helenS Indeed.
hartfire · 61-69
Because many of us don't know how to discuss ideas in an impersonal way.

Most people identify with their beliefs - I am an atheist or Christian, Democrat or Republican, winner or loser etc.
When people feel their ideas are being attacked, they take it personally - as though everything they hold dear is under direct threat.
Similarly, they regard the ideas of others as a proof of who they are - stupid, irresponsible or immoral if they disagree, intelligent and righteous if they agree.

They have no idea why thinking like this is logically wrong, and emotionally and socially damaging.
If they read this they are more likely to reject it and verbally abuse me than to ask for the reasons.
Nimbus · M
@hartfire A closed mind doesn't help either.
hartfire · 61-69
@Nimbus I guess that's the most concise way of putting it. :)
hartfire · 61-69
@4meAndyou Yes, that's it exactly.

A human is a profoundly adaptable being - but many people feel more comfortable with the familiar and fear chance or difference.

I do think that better education could help people realise that in a democracy we really need to listen to and understand one another, especially our feelings, needs and values.
jackson55 · M
Politics have become very polarized, you don’t think the way I do I’m not interested in talking to you is the way it seems to go now. You just can’t agree to disagree.
Nimbus · M
@jackson55 Exactly.
Eventually people will have to unite.
jackson55 · M
@Nimbus let’s hope. But as long as the parties continue to vote far left and right it won’t happen.
Elessar · 31-35, M
Only on SW? That's how politics works worldwide these days.
Elessar · 31-35, M
@Nimbus I don't know how it's over there, but here Facebook is by far the most inflamed medium.
Nimbus · M
@Elessar I wouldn't know as I deleted my account many years ago.
Elessar · 31-35, M
@Nimbus Wise choice, really. I did too, then had to get back because of a very peculiar teacher in university who posted the material exclusively on a private group on there.
smiler2012 · 61-69
it is a non entity alas nimby there seems to be a deep political division on here 😖 @nimbus
Nimbus · M
@smiler2012 Exactly.
Nimbus · M
@smiler2012 That explains it all :)
smiler2012 · 61-69
@Nimbus glad to see you back nimby
Platinum · M
Americans are not like the English , they take it far too seriously and it seems life or death to them....they have not realized that both sides are really the same......we have
4meAndyou · F
@Platinum I do beg to disagree. One side wants to create a healthy economy in the United States, while the other side wants our economy to be drained at all levels except those of extreme wealth. Only THOSE people will prosper when their stocks mushrooms, and business will flee back to China.

At election time in 2024, ask Americans if they feel they more are prosperous, or even comfortable. I predict that most of them will say no. We will not recover from the damage caused by Covid19 under Biden in the next four years, and he plans to immediately cause MORE damage by re-installing the crippling regulations that prevented progress, which Trump removed.

In four years from now, you will find that the wealthy in the USA are far wealthier, and the rest of our country will look a lot like the slums in Tijuana, Mexico.
@4meAndyou I the UK that kind of projection was called 'Project Fear' during our Brexit debate. It was used by both sides in different ways to try to persuade people that the Apocalypse was on its way if they didn't vote how they wanted. Only time will tell.
Platinum · M
@4meAndyou during the last four years I've asked democrats if they are better or worse and they said worse and if you asked a republican he would say better....I don't agree with you but I do agree that America will be worse off in four years time....
Loretta78 · 46-50, F
Politics and religion - those are the two topics where you can't have pleasant discussions - not on SW and also not in the real world. 😑
Nimbus · M
@Loretta78 They can be tough but not impossible.
eMortal · M
Because political questions tell who you really are.
Nimbus · M
@eMortal Exposure uh? :)
eMortal · M
@Nimbus and we don't always like what we see in others.
Nimbus · M
@eMortal There's food for thought.
NoahB · 31-35, M
Because we disagree!
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@Nimbus Exactly. That's my whole point.
NoahB · 31-35, M
@Nimbus that’s true they can. But I don’t think arguing in a bad thing. Let’s get out our feeling out there! LEZ wrassle lol (jk I know what you mean some ppl get way too angry)
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@NoahB Sounds like something lesbians do. Lol :)
SW-User
Well this Q lead me to laughs. 😁 thank you
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@SW-User Does it? You must have an odd sense of humour. Lol :)
SW-User
@Crazychick definitely lol
Nimbus · M
@SW-User 😛
Poppapepe · 51-55, MVIP
It's been that way since the beginning of mankind,.......... unfortunately 😑
Nimbus · M
@Poppapepe Picturing Fred Flintstone with club :)
Rose0415 · 36-40, F
Because many get insulted just for giving a differing opinion. Then you have people such as me who are already hot headed to begin with, and BOOM.
Nimbus · M
@Rose0415 Boom! :)
eMortal · M
Some discussions not worth having.
Nimbus · M
@eMortal Like golf :)
MissTaken · 36-40, F
Because they always seem to be about Tronald Dump 😂.
Nimbus · M
@MissTaken You say that like it's a bad thing.
MissTaken · 36-40, F
@Nimbus He is a bad thing 😂
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
Dunno

Maybe ask all the Trumpers who've blocked me.
smiler2012 · 61-69
@luckranger71 ha ha ha rather apt really as the guy in the white shirt typifies what trumps four years in office have been full of 😝
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
@smiler2012 Nah. MJ actually was the best in the world at his job. Trump is on par with James Buchanan as the worst President in US history.
Nimbus · M
Crazychick · 36-40, F
I thought that was why people post political questions, because they know perfectly well it always lead to arguments. In other words, they are TROLLS!
Nimbus · M
@Crazychick There are a few on SW but not as bad as EP.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@Nimbus Thankfully I wasn't on EP.
RogueLoner · M
I suppose most people don't like being referred to as "deplorables", -ists, -ism's, or -phobes, because they disagree. Look to the source, one Hillary Rodent Clinton. She started it.
RogueLoner · M
@Frank52 Poor baby. 😢 Who was the FIRST to say "basket of deplorables"? 😂
Nimbus · M
@RogueLoner I guess there are worse names.
RogueLoner · M
@Nimbus It's all in the eye of the beholder. There are names that I don't find particularly offensive.
