At what age should a child be allowed a cell phone ?

DragonFruit · 61-69, M
The answer is 42.
Nimbus · M
@DragonFruit No mercy uh? ;)
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@DragonFruit A bit too young don't you think?
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
AbbeyRhode · F
I'm tempted to say "never", seeing how they turn the kids into zombies, hypnotized by that tiny screen. They are good to have in an emergency, but they are too addictive. Too many people, young and old, are spending their lives glued to their phones.
Nimbus · M
@AbbeyRhode Fair point!
MarineBob · 56-60, M
When they can buy it
Nimbus · M
@MarineBob Seems fair :)
Fairydust · F
Mine were 11…

When they went to high school.
Japrost · 41-45, M
@Fairydust probably watched porn on it
Fairydust · F
@Japrost

The phones they had at that age nope. Even if they did, heck’ we all did stuff we shouldn’t.
Japrost · 41-45, M
[@Fairydust lol
Convivial · 26-30, F
When they can pay for it, when they can leave it at home and not have panic attacks
Nimbus · M
@Convivial Good point!
Spectra · 26-30, F
20 years ago I don’t think it’d matter. Back then the basics you could do with a phone is call, text, take pictures, and maybe play games. The real difference maker is that phones now come with access to the internet and the online world, which possess a lot more risk factors socially and psychologically. Honestly I don’t think the age matters as much as the parenting itself. I know a lotta kids (mostly boys) in small towns get taught how to shoot at a young age. There are even clubs and competitions without it creating much issue. Why? Because nobody just hands a kid a gun and says go have fun. They take the time to teach them proper handling and the responsibility that comes with it. The dangers. Safety and caution come first. But with phones it seems more and more parents are content with just giving it to them so freely just so they won’t have to actually parent and interact with their children. But I think if more parents thought about putting a phone in a kid or teens hands the same way they’d think about putting a gun in their hand or the keys to their car things would be different.

And for the record I wouldn’t keep them completely locked away from the internet either cause anyone who doesn’t live under a rock is gonna come to contact with it eventually. And I’d rather be the one to introduce my child to that rather than someone else. It’s one of those things where you can’t fully control the curiosity of a child but you can guide it by meeting in the middle of being strict without being too strict. Because all that does is program them to keep secrets from you and push away.
Nimbus · M
@Spectra Wow, great answer.
Lostpoet · M
Fourth grade and they have to have good grades.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@Lostpoet But they might feel that way if all you care about is them getting good grades.
Lostpoet · M
@Queendragonfly All I care about is them applying themselves if they show up then they'll get passing grades and won't lose their phone.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@Lostpoet I have worked with kids and everyone with too strict parents, starts lying to them. It's just easier. And they are miles away connection wise too. If anything have happened they have never went to their strict parents in fear of dissapointing them, so they go to teachers, or in worst case scenario, stranger adults...
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Way too young. Let them at least get 40.
@Queendragonfly me n you are going to get along just fine 😎
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout As long as you leave my cinnamon buns alone. Or else we are in a bigger war than Israel Palestine and I'll take your wifi and SW account as hostages
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
This is dependent on the child. There are teenagers that obviously can't handle it.

Any that are susceptible to self abuse, obviously shouldn't have a cellphone. And that happens all the time.

The social pressures, when there are mental issues, are too great even without one.

Age limits really don't work. Only parental evaluation has a chance of working. So if a minor is found to have problems with anything, the parent should not only figure it out, yet should be held responsible.

It's their child and they should know their children best. Or be held accountable. Because legally they are responsible for their children.
Nimbus · M
@DeWayfarer Good points there 👍

@EdwinDrood THat's pretty old!
Fairydust · F
@EdwinDrood

Correct answer!

Cell Phones-prison=big brother watching us.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
A cell phone for only texts and calls from confirmed people. Age 9-12.

A smart phone with child safety installation. Age 13-17

A smart phone they have full control of. Age 18.
Nimbus · M
@Queendragonfly Reasonable 👍
black4white · 56-60, M
it all depends on the child and parenting style.... i know some grown men/women that are well over 30 that probably be better off without a cell phone, just saying...LOL
Nimbus · M
@black4white Exactly.
Nimbus · M
@AbbySvenz 😛
Man this question is tricky......

I mean my nephew is four and he has been allowed access to his mum's phone since he was three... he also has his kid safe tablet but his mum restricts his time on it.

He is a social kid who has won an award at school for helping the other kids so his mum's arrangement has clearly worked.

Oh and he knows how to WhatsApp video call and me and my wife are his favourite Auntie and Uncle 😂
@Nimbus Well, it does on my wife's side 😅
Nimbus · M
@BritishFailedAesthetic I won't add anything to that ;)
@Nimbus With me? How could you not? 🤭
deadgerbil · 22-25
No one should have a phone. You really want to give up your privacy? Get it together man!
Nimbus · M
@deadgerbil An abonimation at best ;)
crownedwithlaurel97 · 26-30, F
a jitterbug when they’re like 10 and a regular phone when they’re 16
Nimbus · M
GunFinger · F
When you feel they are responsible. Highschool age, maybe?
Nimbus · M
@GunFinger I agree :)
alisonjayne · 46-50, F
the way to keep them safe is to install a parental control app
Nimbus · M
darkmere1983 · 46-50, M
not until they are at least 18 or over.
Nimbus · M
@darkmere1983 Reasonable.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
They’re so prevalent, I think good kids can handle one at 11-12. I think everyone has one by their freshman year in hs, so you might as well get the hang of it before then.

With rules of course.
Dave1955 · 61-69, M
@Adogslife I remember talking about this when i was a kid. How in the future you would have your own personal phone and you'd but able to ring each other up. I had no idea how they would invent such a thing or long the phone numbers would be. (how are you going to remember them?) Now the dream is real
Adogslife · 61-69, M
@Dave1955 Get Smart and the “spy” shoe phone, that’s when I first thought it’d be possible (soon).
Dave1955 · 61-69, M
@Adogslife Lol that was a good show
4meAndyou · F
I think age 7 is not too old for a child to have a very basic phone without internet. A child needs to be able to call his or her Mom or Dad if he or she gets into trouble, or gets lost.
Nimbus · M
@4meAndyou Good point 👍
MissTaken · 36-40, F
Nimbus · M
@MissTaken Yikes, might not live that long ;)
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
When they can afford one themselves ..OR when the parents deem in necessary for them to have one to communicate with them..😷
Nimbus · M
Uniquelyme · 31-35, M
I got mine at 16
alisonjayne · 46-50, F
@Queendragonfly your parents shoukd have locked it down with a parental control apo
Convivial · 26-30, F
@alisonjayne its one way of learning...
anderst · 46-50, M
@alisonjayne but than the parents did know all what the kid do on the phone
18….go use a phone box…..or have mum listening to every word!
Nimbus · M
@TheSirfurryanimalWales Good point :)
smiler2012 · 56-60
@Nimbus sixteen when they can pay for the thing and the credit nimby 😆
Nimbus · M
@smiler2012 Sounds OK 👍
GunFinger · F
Now because I'm a helicopter parent.😂✌️
nedkelly · 61-69, M
15, and they are responsible enough
turnedtostone · 56-60, F
When they pay for it themselves
Nimbus · M
@submissivelittlewoman Fair enough.
Nimbus · M
@HannahSky 😛 OK
Dave1955 · 61-69, M
42 , Then you have no chance of been able to understand all the functions !
shuhak · M
Not one minute before their 110th birthday.
Nimbus · M
@shuhak If still alive! ;)
shuhak · M
@Nimbus That's the point.
LadyJ · F
Highschool age
Nimbus · M
@LadyJ Seems fair.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
I'm not a fan of before 16, but the local culture here seems to consider you backwards if your 12 year old doesn't have one.
Nimbus · M
@ViciDraco lol,
Nimbus · M
@NativePortlander1970 An essential then.
