Tell us what back in the day was like for you

I was born in Nebraska. My grandfather had a farm there. We spent the summers on the farm. Lots of things like cherokeepatti mentioned, during the summers on that farm. Lots of good memories of cherry picking, the animals, and the gardens. Big family picnics. Jello salads...fried chidken...hamburgers. The family was so huge I didn't know the names of all the Great Aunts and Uncles.

In Nebraska I had lots of cousins to play with, and we would go to the Municipal pool sometimes, which was nice, and we took lots of side trips, to Utah, and Wyoming, and South Dakota.

We spent the school year back in Massachusetts. Massachusetts was good, too, because at least I had friends here...and there were more than 2 TV channels...🤣🤣🤣

Dream like. When neighbors were neighbors. We watched our shows and come outside when nothing else was on! Make believe worlds and characters!

People taking pictures to treasure moments in time. Things were so candid back then. Yes I was very young but I was extremely cerebral for my age.

Hollywood video was my library for pop culture! My mom would take us. I would rent Godzilla movies, anything with a monster. Ma, give me a few recommendations. Got me into old Hollywood.

3 words have always stuck out to me

1. Adventure

2. Creativity

3. Friendship

Those days were like my krypton. It was like a beautiful fictional utopian planet that blew up one day.

But hey, I’m doing okay. I use nostalgia as medication these days. I’m lucky to have live should a good time.

Was born on a farm and our entertainment was visiting friends or neighbors even for just a little while, having cook-outs and ice cream socials with all of our farm friends (farm families took turns hosting them, The ladies baked cookies of various types and brought them and the cream & flavorings for the type of ice cream they wanted and everyone brought their freezers and some ice. The men stayed outdoors, exchanged pleasantries and churned the ice cream & the children played games like horse shoes or croquet in the yard. The ladies gathered inside and made coffee and arranged the cookies on platters and got the dishes etc together. When the weather cooled down we’d have fish fries and invite relatives and neighbors. My grandpa loved to fish and always had too many fish to consume by himself. When someone had a birthday they would get a homemade cake & homemade ice cream and visits by relatives and close friends. It wasn’t uncommon for people to drive out in the summer and drop by. If it was their first time we’d give them a tour of the farm, show them the animals, the pond and the creek and take a long walk on the farm road.

Our food was homemade and homegrown, we didn’t go to restaurants or buy much processed foods. We learned to do chores very young. My favorite thing was working out in the garden. I loved to plant things and loved to pick veggies and fruit. I would help with washing the jars for canning & snap the green beans, which were a lot each time. In the fall and winter when we stayed indoors a lot I liked to keep busy with hobbies like embroidery or crafty things. There were only 3 watchable channels on TV and it was black & white, so I wasn’t crazy for watching TV.

As a kid, we were free to roam the neighborhood and countryside with no fear. We played ball with no adult supervision. As teens, dates were cheap: 50 cents for gas, a dollar each for the movie, and popcorn plus drinks for less than a dollar. TV had three stations, all black and white. The downside was strict racial segregation, pure evil.

When everyone hung together. No cell phones. When everything was mechanical. No software to update. When cars were great.

I was born and raised on a tobacco farm and nobody in my family ever smoked cigarettes. My Dad always told us that only rich people smoke cigarettes and our mission in life was to serve the rich.

My primary job on the farm was to manage our roadside vegetable stand which I operated by myself every weekend from the age of 12 until I left home for university life, fortune and fame.
Once upon a time, we could operate motorcycles without wearing a helmet. Then Gary Busey slams his head into a sidewalk curb and ruins it for everyone.
