Was born on a farm and our entertainment was visiting friends or neighbors even for just a little while, having cook-outs and ice cream socials with all of our farm friends (farm families took turns hosting them, The ladies baked cookies of various types and brought them and the cream & flavorings for the type of ice cream they wanted and everyone brought their freezers and some ice. The men stayed outdoors, exchanged pleasantries and churned the ice cream & the children played games like horse shoes or croquet in the yard. The ladies gathered inside and made coffee and arranged the cookies on platters and got the dishes etc together. When the weather cooled down we’d have fish fries and invite relatives and neighbors. My grandpa loved to fish and always had too many fish to consume by himself. When someone had a birthday they would get a homemade cake & homemade ice cream and visits by relatives and close friends. It wasn’t uncommon for people to drive out in the summer and drop by. If it was their first time we’d give them a tour of the farm, show them the animals, the pond and the creek and take a long walk on the farm road.
Our food was homemade and homegrown, we didn’t go to restaurants or buy much processed foods. We learned to do chores very young. My favorite thing was working out in the garden. I loved to plant things and loved to pick veggies and fruit. I would help with washing the jars for canning & snap the green beans, which were a lot each time. In the fall and winter when we stayed indoors a lot I liked to keep busy with hobbies like embroidery or crafty things. There were only 3 watchable channels on TV and it was black & white, so I wasn’t crazy for watching TV.
