You can only vote on one answer.
When they do it will turn the tables on Putin.
Ukraine is already going through the accelerated process of becoming a NATO member which means it could happen inside the next 18-24 months.

The criminals in Moscow have thermonuclear weapons. They can attack foreign countries, and rape, kill and torture citizens of foreign countries without any risk.
The butchers in Moscow know that Western countries don't want to risk WW-III. We in the West do not gamble with the lives of millions of people. Our peacefulness is the greatest asset of the Russian mafia.

@helenS NATO countries need to be able to combine with Ukraine to force Russia to pull back its troops.

@justanothername Do you have children?
justanothername · 51-55, M
@helenS please stay on topic and stop deflecting.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
I doubt despite all posturing that NATO will let them in with an active invasion since it guarantees a massive, massive war nobody actually wants.
spjennifer · 56-60, T
No, as long as Russia stays within the Ukrainian border, NATO will not act. Once Russia leaves, then Ukraine may get approval to join NATO and only then will it fall under the protection of NATO. NATO Countries will supply Ukraine with weapons to fight Russia but they won't attack Russia directly now.

@spjennifer
as long as Russia stays within the Ukrainian border, NATO will not act
It's a bit like "As long as those punks are in your house, the police can't help you, unfortunately"
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@spjennifer Yup - despite the nonsense spouted by putin, NATO is a purely defensive organisation.
If the russians bring their genocidal behaviour to a NATO member they'll get a very severe reminder that they're a Potemkin country with an army that's a global joke.
spjennifer · 56-60, T
@newjaninev2 Sometimes I wonder if Poteen realizes just how much total might NATO has as an organization, they would be crushed pretty quickly should they tangle with NATO.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
If Obama hadn't convinced Ukraine to surrender its nuclear weapons in exchange for its freedom from Russia they would still hold that ace card, that equalizer.

You can't make a deal with the devil without surrendering to it. How many times has that lesson been repeated?
spjennifer · 56-60, T
@Heartlander tbh, those weapons didn't belong to Ukraine as an independent Nation, they were weapons of the Soviet Union and were given to Russia. The Budapest Memorandum, signed by Ukraine, Russia, the UK and United States was supposed to "promise that none of the nations would use force or threats against Ukraine and all would respect its sovereignty and existing borders. The agreement also vowed that, if aggression took place, the signatories would seek immediate action from the United Nations Security Council to aid Ukraine." The only country to not respect that has been Russia. The Ukrainian People wanted the weapons gone too.

Welcome to manufactured WW3......if we continue to consent

@LordShadowfire And like most liberals you resort to what Chomsky termed worthy and unworthy victims based on whoever is in line with US imperialism this week.

And proving once again the instant there is anything more substantial in terms of stakes than a hypothetical liberals and the right always end up on the same side.

But whatever. Keep up the cognitive dissonance and lying to yourself and others as to why the west is never responsible for the consequences of their imperialist foreign policy.

The battle cry of liberals everywhere "imperialism is bad....but only when others do it.....and responses to American imperialism is always bad."

This has fuck all to do with Putin. Literally any leader who is not a traitor would respond in a hostile manner to an aggressive imperialist puppet state being installed on their border.

But Vicki Nuland gets a pass because well Americans are always right.

The only difference between a neo con and a liberal interventionist is the excuses for the conquest.

Doubtful. Ukraine is in trouble and not just because of the war. The country is slowly imploding. Zelensky is in a power struggle with the head of his armed forces and corruption still runs rampant. Former ministers in his government calling him a dictator openly, banning political rivals from traveling abroad. It is a mess.

And Georgia was further along towards NATO membership and the US was not willing to start WW3 over them. Now the Georgian president is wanted in his own country and was installed as a governor in Ukraine (Odessa if I remember correctly).
ArishMell · 70-79, M
I voted No because unless NATO has changed its own laws, a country cannot join NATO while at war itself.

Ukraine also wants to join the EU, which is a political and economic, not military, alliance; but the EU has told the country it will be welcome but must put its own house in order first by rooting out corruption that has dogged it for a long time.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow
As usual you have to go out of your way to misrepresent everything I say.
Not really.
@LordShadowfire Actually that is exactly what you do on a regular basis. You seem to love engaging in slander when it comes to me. And it has been so frequent it is a pattern of behavior at this point.

NATO is a pack of lap dogs against a Russian bear. The conflict in Ukraine is telling. Applying all that economic clout of the west couldn't bring Russia down. The only dog in the pack with teeth is the US, and not even the Houthis are afraid of us.
@sree251
There are no good war movies that show us in a good light.
Send them bad ones
@sree251 Turns out NATO and the US are the paper tigers. It was off to a rough start for Russia but that has definitely changed. And with Ukraine now putting a general in charge that his own forces call the butcher that is not likely to go any better.

All this because Vicki Nuland and co fucked around and found out and poor and working class Ukrainians and Russians are dying because of it.

@jshm2 Neither russia nor the so-called 'russian federation' has ever been voted in as a member of the UN.
Their presence is based on tolerance and pretence - like so many things about russia.
@jshm2 You’re confusing NATO with the UN Security Council. Russia has no say as to who joins NATO, it’s purely up to the member states.

No, the world will forget Ukraine. The monster of Palestine has emerged.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@sunriselover it isn't either-or.

We can deal with both simultaneously.

russia can be disposed of any time our tolerance runs out... they're merely an irritant

@sunriselover Nobody cares about Palestine beyond an excuse to complain about Israel.
Exactly why Putin is threatened and says if Russia's sovereignty is threatened he will use nukes. The same man who is trying to take over a sovereign country.
@Pitchblue Maybe because the US overthrew the government of that same country (Ukraine) and installed a hostile puppet state?

Give you two guesses what would happen if Iran carried out a coup in Mexico City and put in a puppet government run by the Republican Guard.
Rumboltz · 41-45, M
No. Unfortunately, Russia has its will in eastern europe. NATO can only bark like a big dog, that is stll chained up.
Khenpal1 · M
Ukraine is new Afghanistan for Russia , but they will not become member of NATO or EU.
@Khenpal1 I think a more accurate comparison would be a slower burn WW1 but agree with the rest.
wonkywinky · 51-55, M
Why shouldnt it?Russia has been totally discredited as a serious military force.
We need to disband NATO. Vote Cornell West.
spjennifer · 56-60, T
@Roundandroundwego Why do we "need to disband NATO"?

That's just what we need, a Theological Academic who's never had a job in the real world and can't decide which Party he belongs in, sure...

Sarcasm intended
@Roundandroundwego Vote Cornel West, he needs a bigger paycheck.
They can’t. NATO requires stable borders and they don’t have that now.
Yeah, probably. Even though they have previously been denied membership because of their human rights record.
