If you had family history of an untreatable disease that you had 50% probability of inheriting but it typically sets on later at like 40 years old

would you get tested? Why or why not?
I think I would yes if the test is available for you you should definitely take the opportunity and get it out of the way.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@PiecingBabyFaceTogether yeah I think people should learn from others like you especially when the chances are so high
@HannibalAteMeOut I hope you are okay, love you ❤ have some molokia and you'll be fine 🤗
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@PiecingBabyFaceTogether yes I am, it's not about me 🖤 I will buy it after Easter for sure! 😌
BlueVeins · 22-25
Yes, obviously.
akindheart · 61-69, F
both of my children were born with a rare genetic disease that no one else had in the family. Just a rare hookup between me and my exhusband. you bet they got genetic counselling. especially if you want to have kids.
ineedadrink · 51-55, M
Yes,I would have. But for what it's worth, I would suggest not being too sure that any disease is untreatable down the road. A neighbor's daughter was born with CF, expected life span of 25 years. Then they came out with biologicals to treat it and she is now 27, married & doing well. She actually isn't sure what to do in life as everything with the med is so new: have kids, plan for retirement, long term plans that she never thought would apply to her.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@ineedadrink that's happy news for her and I agree, I also know a girl with cystic fibrosis who had lung transplantation and is now doing better and medicine is constantly improving so I have faith for many more conditions
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Yes, I would, I would want to know. I already have an untreatable disease which is genetic so what...
I wonder if I could have prevented it or postponed the onset somehow if I had known there was a predisposition earlier, but maybe these things happen so randomly that you just have no chance to know what is right and wrong to do so you can as well just live your life all the same and see what happens.
deadgerbil · 26-30
Yes, I don't want any surprises
Scribbles · 36-40, F
Yes. It would feel negligent to not get tested. And I'd be a worrywart about it anyway. Lol

And yes, Because knowledge helps equip you to prepare for the future, however or whatever you may choose for yourself. I have a genetic blood disorder in which I have to be careful about birth control. My siblings and I had a 50 percent chance of getting it. I'm glad I learned about that sooner rather then later so I could learn more about it. What if I had a debilitating condition and quality of life from blood clots in my.blood stream at 22 because of taking the wrong birth control year after year?

Knowledge is a good thing. I'd want to prepare myself for the best health outcome. Even if it's years before I have to worry about it.
ProfessorPlum77 · 70-79, MVIP
I would not get tested until I started to show symptoms of a disease.
After all, there is a 50 percent chance I will NOT inherit the disease.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@ProfessorPlum77 if you show symptoms that would mean you do have it, plus if the test requires DNA analyzation it pretty much is not needed at that point
Elessar · 26-30, M
I'd get tested at 40, not earlier
Elessar · 26-30, M
@HannibalAteMeOut At that point I may want to know if I could get disabled and/or in a coffin anytime soon, and if so, stress even less about the futile things. But earlier on, it would make no difference.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@Elessar what about if you wanted to have kids before that?
Elessar · 26-30, M
@HannibalAteMeOut If one wants to have kids, yeah, maybe so
I kinda do but I’m not gonna worry about it until it happens.
Lost both parents to cancer and my sister had leukemia and my oldest brother has Parkinson’s
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
Isn’t it better to get tested so perhaps the medical professionals can develop a cure, or at least a treatment?
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@Quimliqer so you mean like as a way to broaden the sample they can work with?
dimfok · 22-25, M
Θα έκανα τεστ (με την υπόθεση πως το τεστ εχει πολυ υψηλή ακριβεια κλπ κλπ). Προτιμώ ενα κακό αποτέλεσμα από την άγνοια
AntisocialTroll · 56-60, F
If I was a young un I wouldn't get tested unless I was planning on having kids.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@AntisocialTroll yeah I think the same too, but maybe I also would in order to make sure I visit the right doctors and collect money for all the things I'd need in case I developed it, plus I think it'd be a reminder to do some things for myself as long as I'd have the chance cause there's no going back.
Arorin · M
If its untreatable then why bother? So i can gwt my affairs in order? Im 33 without any affairs to get in order.
Northwest · M
I would want to know ASAP, worrying about it for 20 years, is no way to live.
WillaKissing · 56-60
For cancer, and yes, I have and do. No sense on waiting until it is too late to treat.
SW-User
Oh yeah or I would be overthinking the unknown 24/7 for my whole life.
PhilDeep · 51-55, M
I know people who have this same issue and discussed it too.
SwampFlower · 31-35, F
I would. I don't like surprises like that.
Iwillwait · M
Why bother. Just live your best life. Fuck it!
I would want to know. And even results are usually just probabilities. Plus 20 years of anxiety about it and besides you can keep up on it and with some conditions what you do in your 20s like diet can make symptoms less severe down the road like type 2 diabetes or circulatory related conditions.
ExtremeNext · 31-35
Nope
I live for the moment
CrustyDDingus · 36-40, M
Nah, I'd just drink more. 💀💀
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
Yeah, fuck it.
I have OCD. I know me.
I'd just worry about it until the worry is worse than actually just ripping the Bandaid off.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@basilfawlty89 wouldn't you be afraid that you could develop some "preventative" or more obsessive behaviours once you knew you actually had it? Like isn't it a double edged sword in that case?
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@HannibalAteMeOut it kinda is, but at the same time at least there's some measure of surety. OCD really dislikes uncertainty.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@basilfawlty89 yeah that makes sense
And live in suspense? I'd lance that boil
Yes, for my daughter
MethDozer · M
Prolly not. Fuck it.
