Copper does NOT keep slugs out of your garden

I read on a website discussing natural ways to get rid of slugs that they will not cross over copper. I have a bunch of beading wire that is 100% copper so I started making rings around my plants with it. Then I saw a slug. I surrounded it with the copper wire. The slug slimed its way right over the copper wire like idgaf. I stopped putting copper wire around my plants and gathered the rest back. Dont believe everything you read on the internet and copper is not the solution for everything.

Diatomaceous earth.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@LunarOrbit Well I've never done that , but I'll take your word for it!
morrgin · F
@LunarOrbit ive used it for chickens
morrgin · F
@JimboSaturn ive been wanting to use that but cant use it when its wet outside

Plug the copper wires into an outlet. Bet that works
smiler2012 · 56-60
never knew the police had time to waste with so much crime to spend removing tresspassing molluscs from gardens 😆[morrgin]
That’s coppers for ya, silly goose…🤭@smiler2012

Tried old coffee grounds, didn’t work, beer traps catch lots of the critters !
Blueyed · 61-69, M
I fucking hate slugs. I smash them between rocks
morrgin · F
@Blueyed i was doing that with a garden tool for awhile
Montanaman · M
@Blueyed sprinkle salt on em!🤪🤭
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
Have you tried silver? I noticed slugs only seem to come out during a full moon...something quite suspicious there.
morrgin · F
@Longpatrol around here they always come out with any bit of moisture and all the freakin rain we've been getting washes away whatever i put down?
I should shoot them with silver bullets? It would have to be a very small gun maybe? Its also kind of strange that they are basically a snail without a shell.
FurryFace · 61-69, M
@Longpatrol when Slugs start howling at the Moon , lol
dumasme · 51-55, M
Beer traps is the way to go IMHO... dig a small can/bowl ito the ground and fill half way with beer. Crappy beer works best and is cheap too :)

We had this problem a couple of years ago but i noticed the last couple of years a msssive decline in them..i think some of thr birds hsve been eating them and we also have slow worns which eat slugs/snails.
If you can introduce slow worms to your garden it will be a massive help
morrgin · F
@Gangstress thx for the tip i will look into it

A lot of salt, enough to jack up their blood pressure. That will kill them for sure
SW-User
@morrgin Just a little bit where they lie 😁
Nanoose · 61-69, M
@morrgin What I used to do was cut a bike tube into one foot long pieces then put the bait in the middle of the tube the tube kept the bait dry and not be able to wash away. Cheers!
morrgin · F
@Nanoose that a good idea
Nanoose · 61-69, M
It does work. Slugs can arch their body over a cooper wire so they don't make contact with the copper. You need about a 5 inch wide copper ring to stop a medium sized slug. Cheers!
morrgin · F
@Nanoose that sounds like a lot of copper. How about pennies?
Nanoose · 61-69, M
@morrgin I did the penny thing. I hot glued pennies to card board strips and placed them around the plants it kind of worked. Cheers!
Copper wire does not have enough surface area to be effective. You need copper mesh. The lsrger surface area reacts with their mucous and messes them up.
morrgin · F
@Majorlatency where would i find copper mesh? Whats it usually used for?
@morrgin Google copper mesh..Immediately it comes up on Amazon, Walmart and a plethora of other stores.

Lolz…I think the best way to get rid of them is to sprinkle sand or salt or mulch around the area…that worked for me.
FurryFace · 61-69, M
maybe they ran an electric current through the wire
morrgin · F
@FurryFace it said that the wire causes an an electric current when the slug touches it and so the slug wont go over it
Really · 80-89, M
@morrgin Nanoose is correct. I've experimented by trapping slugs inside a ring of 1/2 inch soft copper tube. At first they would rear up and rertreat from it; but eventually they escaped by arching their bodies over, but not touching it. I can imagine a wider 'barricade' such as mesh might defeat them.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
They make a snail bait sold at garden stores
morrgin · F
@cherokeepatti i was going with the non existent budget for gardening and using what i already had. Around here slug bait is usually sold out. Online shopping is always an option but still have the money factor
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@morrgin wood ashes works as long as it’s kept dry, make a ring around the plants with it
morrgin · F
@cherokeepatti too much rain
One time I threw salt to a slug
morrgin · F
@PepsiColaP did he catch it? Did he throw it back?
@morrgin yes to my eyes now I'm blind
morrgin · F
@PepsiColaP so if you cant see the slugs do they still exist?
MrGomco · 36-40, M
Use lines made of salt in some areas, that works well.
Montanaman · M
🙋‍♀️Peppermint oil. 😎
morrgin · F
@Montanaman really?
Montanaman · M
@morrgin yup.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I don't see why it would deter them
MethDozer · M
It does work but two things. You need uncoated copper and it needs to have some surfa e area.

Copper wire for jewelry and embroidery usually is lacquered or coated in a clear resin so it doesn't corrode as easily.
morrgin · F
@MethDozer yeah i was using copper jewelry wire, but from what u said i feel not so defeated and want to try again
