In Italy, taxi drivers sing opera arias. It's a part of the culture, and it is not just for rich people.
But it has, sadly, taken on an elitist air in the US, although I think less so nowadays than it used to. And you don't have to be rich to watch it on television or online, or to listen to recordings.
I read a novel by Edith Wharton, called "Age of Innocence". It was about the "inner circle" of sophisticated wealthy people in early New York City. There was an opera house downtown, and everyone would go and observe everyone else in the box seats as much as they watched the opera. (what is she wearing, who is he sitting with, etc.) And one thing that they were all concerned about was the construction underway for a larger opera house farther north (the future Metropolitan Opera House) which would be too big -- all sorts of other people would be able to attend!
To answer your question, yes I like opera, to the extent that I have listened or watched any. It helps if you learn the storyline beforehand. (Or watch a version with subtitles) But I am not a big fan, the way some of my friends are.
I love opera. Carmen is my favorite I also love Verdi and Puccini. Wagner is a bit melodramatic for me, but still great. I'm getting into Russian opera lately, Boris Gudnnov by Mussorgsky.
Actually, theater shows are fun! But yeah, kinda have the rich people vibes. But then, I saw some people in jeans too. So just wear something smart casual. You'd be fine.
But that was for a play, not really opera. I like theater plays.
@DrWatson Did you see the movie with Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte ? I watched it with my best friend years ago, she said they were "two of the most beautiful people" she’d ever seen.
I would probably like it more if I could speak Italian. Since I don't understand the words, I don't really care about it. But I don't think of it as a "rich people" thing. I think of it as a stage Musical from Italy, with good music.
