In Italy, taxi drivers sing opera arias. It's a part of the culture, and it is not just for rich people.
But it has, sadly, taken on an elitist air in the US, although I think less so nowadays than it used to. And you don't have to be rich to watch it on television or online, or to listen to recordings.
I read a novel by Edith Wharton, called "Age of Innocence". It was about the "inner circle" of sophisticated wealthy people in early New York City. There was an opera house downtown, and everyone would go and observe everyone else in the box seats as much as they watched the opera. (what is she wearing, who is he sitting with, etc.) And one thing that they were all concerned about was the construction underway for a larger opera house farther north (the future Metropolitan Opera House) which would be too big -- all sorts of other people would be able to attend!
To answer your question, yes I like opera, to the extent that I have listened or watched any. It helps if you learn the storyline beforehand. (Or watch a version with subtitles) But I am not a big fan, the way some of my friends are.

I don't like it. If I'm looking for something with class i like to listen to jazz
Not usually but in this one movie it was super super good .. the fifth element?

Actually, theater shows are fun! But yeah, kinda have the rich people vibes. But then, I saw some people in jeans too. So just wear something smart casual. You'd be fine.
But that was for a play, not really opera. I like theater plays.

I would probably like it more if I could speak Italian. Since I don't understand the words, I don't really care about it. But I don't think of it as a "rich people" thing. I think of it as a stage Musical from Italy, with good music.
I wanna get into it. But i need a proper introduction from someone who is passionate about it.
No one romanticizes anything better than someone with a passion for the subject.

Yes. I won't say how I started because it's unfair on the person who introduced me to it, but yes, I'm getting into it.

I enjoyed Phantom of the Opera when I saw I.
@Cloud7593 It's not an opera, though.
Cloud7593 · 46-50, F
@jackieash27 It was pretty operatic.

Yes ! My father took me to see Leontyne Price perform AIDA when I was a child. I especially love Italian operas, although my favorite opera is Carmen.

Leontyne Price! Well, you started out with someone pretty impressive!
Carmen is my wife's favorite as well. We have gone to see it live onstage, and we enjoyed the movie with Placido Domingo.
We recently watched the modern adaptation Carmen Jones, and we were pretty impressed by it.

@DrWatson Did you see the movie with Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte ? I watched it with my best friend years ago, she said they were "two of the most beautiful people" she’d ever seen.

Yep, that's the one. I knew about that movie's existence for a long time without realizing what it was! I thought it was cleverly done.
So did your friend....uh....actually pay attention to any of the music? 😂

I'm eclectic so yes, especially from Maria Callas and Montserrat Caballe. My favorite is rock though.
@Nihiless Any other singers with the initials M C ? :)
@jackieash27 None springs to mind! 🤣
