In Italy, taxi drivers sing opera arias. It's a part of the culture, and it is not just for rich people.

But it has, sadly, taken on an elitist air in the US, although I think less so nowadays than it used to. And you don't have to be rich to watch it on television or online, or to listen to recordings.

I read a novel by Edith Wharton, called "Age of Innocence". It was about the "inner circle" of sophisticated wealthy people in early New York City. There was an opera house downtown, and everyone would go and observe everyone else in the box seats as much as they watched the opera. (what is she wearing, who is he sitting with, etc.) And one thing that they were all concerned about was the construction underway for a larger opera house farther north (the future Metropolitan Opera House) which would be too big -- all sorts of other people would be able to attend!

To answer your question, yes I like opera, to the extent that I have listened or watched any. It helps if you learn the storyline beforehand. (Or watch a version with subtitles) But I am not a big fan, the way some of my friends are.
